Full Version: Mods get Steamworks SDK - NS1?

Hi,

Valve have released the Steamworks SDK to a few mod authors to then release their (free) mods via Steam.

http://steamreview.org/posts/steamworksmod/

I know UW already have access to the SDK (Suduko), but what about releasing NS1 under Steam (if thats doable) to try and get some more players going?

Could help!

Thoughts?

I'd be surprised if this was an option for a HL1 mod, but if it was then I'd be willing to do the work.

when valve discussed steamworks, they made it sound like it was not an engine specific system. I don't remember them ever saying it has to be on the Source engine, and if it doesn't then I dont see why it wouldnt be able to be put into a hl1 mod. This would also definitely bring in a lot of players for the achievements, and just the fact that it is a new update in itself.

One thing I ask is that if this is done, please make most of the achievements classic only, because It just seemed like the community was so much more healthy when there were a lot of classic players.

I'm sure it would be possible to add steamworks features to a HL1 mod, but I was referring to valve's offer to host the mods on steam.

It isn't in Valve's best interests to offer this stuff to HL1 mods, I'd be extremely surprised if they offered it. Hell, I'm extremely surprised they're still offering it to Source mods after that stunt that Synergy pulled, breaching their NDA ...

I don't see why not. NS is by far the most popular 3rd party hl1 mod, and still has more servers and players than most hl2 mods. If anything it would show that steamworks is versatile and compatible with even older engines, and it might entice more people into throwing down 5 dollars to buy halflife over steam.

Why would they promote people to spend 5 dollars on HL1, when they can promote people to spend like 30 dollars on HL2? Like I said, it isn't in their best business interests. Also, why would they need to promote Steamworks at all? It isn't like they need people to buy it, they're giving it away for free to developers.

We had some discussions with Valve about it, but they decided to focus on bringing HL2 mods to Steamworks first.

Are there plans to incorporate steamworks into ns1 later on?

I'd imagine this is because Steamworks is largely an unfinished product and these mods are essentially going to guinea-pig the service, which professional companies would not be comfortable doing.

Does Steamworks allow games to make use of Steam's server browser?

http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/gameservices.php

It doesn't specifically say so, but I would imagine so.

We've been back and forth with Valve on this. Last time I heard, they said "let's do it" and it should be in process (in theory).

Update: I pinged the appropriate folks at Valve to see if we can make this happen.

Awesome! Please keep us posted if anything happens!

Yes, this new half-life patch currently killed NS... sad-fix.gif

If developers don't patch this at weekend ASAP, maybe most of players find another mod = NS fully died...

I think most of the people still playing NS are hardcore enough about it to NOT run to another mod just because NS is down for a day or two.

What other mod will they move too for Half-Life?

Many people asked me if they knew what was wrong with their games, and they couldn't connect to any of their Half-Life mods either...

I also heard about other mods being effected, but now back on topic.

I'm not sure if NS1 should be added to Steam for a variety of reasons. First is Vista. If you look at the Valve Hardware Survey you can see that almost 20% of people on steam are using Vista. Yes I know about the cl_gammaramp 0, but that doesn't fix all the problems. Most computers come with Vista today and in June of 09' Windows 7 will be released. No doubt Windows 7 will have the same problems. Second is the community. The NS community is full of veteran players and they aren't kind to new players. If you don't know what to do prepare to be yelled at.

That said, I would prefer the NS2 team work on NS2. It looks like they have made good progress. I'm sure lots of people will return when NS2 is released.

It only takes one or two people to get frustrated a new player to ruin the game.

Then again, If the new players don't ask or make it aware that they are new we can't give them the support they need.
