Lets put balancing and fairness to the marine team aside for a moment, and think - what if you were glowie floating around the hive, and you decided you wanted to evolve with certain abilities. You could choose from all of the previous evolutions and abilities that exists in NS1 (and even made up ones if you really want). What would you become?
I'd pick a gorge, so i have the ability to build
my first attack would be spores
2nd attack blink
3rd web
4th parasite
All in all turning me into a fatty building squid

perhaps i would look extra fat, because of my spore glands, and web glands

I could do things like web marines and then spore them while they are stuck
or blink into marine spawn, drop some oc's and sc's and blink back out

I'd pick a skulk with metabolize and acid rocket. How can you divorce this from balance?

I think something like a wall climber with a melee attack, umbra and bile bomb. I can picture this as looking like something between a skulk and fade, although hopefully animated more gracefully than the NS1 fade.

Just for fun? But I am limited to what NS1 had? To be honest, I wouldn't change anything, they pretty much had each experience pretty well done ... and what they did change they had to either due to bugs or the results not matching what they desired for the experience.
If I got to add something new though, then I could ramble on and on. To keep it short, I would want gorge as starting life form with a focus on range attack and healing, skulk I would would do a focus on leaping and hiding, lerk a focus on support even to the point of being the quick evac through friendly pick up of gorge and skulk, fade I would basicly want to actually appear to come out of walls and shadows, and the onos I would want to be a wall crunching, crate bash tossing, sealed door busting menace that would go through a grouping of marines like it was a bowling ball and they were the pins.
Er, but that's probably off topic and you have probably seen my support for that stuff in I&S.

oh god, imagine how much fun you would have with that thing, and how bloody annoying it would be to play against.....

I know this is just for fun but it gives me an interesting mod idea. some one could mod the game to create an alien arena spin off. u pick your model and attacks then enter the arena then either hunt other aliens or rines, tho i expect the rines would have to be bots cause theyd get munched

I'd pick a fade with acid rocket instead of blink. (blink as the 4th ability and acid as the 2nd)

New alien, about the size of a gorge. Has a special ability which spawns a new creature which is basically a walking bomb. If stuck to a marine only a second marine can remove it, all it requires is hitting the use key on the afflicted.

Wow so many choices.
How about a lerk with...
1. spores
2. parasite
3. heal spray
4. devour
I like the supporting roles. So many less rines shooting at you when the Onos comes in.

lerks that can pick up gorges
onos that can swallow skulks or gorges and spit them back out, for offencive and offencive reasons, of onos wants to bail turn dont get blocked by gorge pick him up and take him home as well saves him getting shot.
as for abilitys
i want to see some diversity in deliverance, so far all attacks are based near on directly in front at the cross hair.
think the UT scorpian alt fire to have blades that exstend out of both sides, or gorge with a 360 turret on his back, a lurk redemer missle with out such a large exsplosion.
take the skulks bite, or the onos devour, the cross hairs got to be pritty much spot on, and at high speeds can be quite anoying due to every ones latency different systems, not saying dumb it down,
but it would be favorable.
games are at a point were models clashing against models can have some detrimental effects, that skulk leaping at your face, you hold out to long to put that shot gun round in him, hes not going to fall to the ground you still have a meat carcus flying at you at 80km all covered in spikes and teeth
that lurks still dive bombing you with his mouth open it would be akin to haveing a boxing bag droped on your head, except its got a bear trap jerry rigged to it. you may end up falling on your arse, you may drop your gun.
id like a creature like a skulk, with short range shot gun spikes that raipidly fall off over distance, peirce ability, for building damage, marine armor damage, and to carry targets off even if only for a short distance with a chance of having the marine drop his current equiped gun, web or slip goo as lvl 3, and a leap like blink ability to enhance all its other abilitys thus far with intricate abiltiy swaping combos.
wait in darkness on ceiling, shot gun spike ones face off drop slick pool between slow marines, armor peirce the second front line marine and leap him around the courner to the gorge and OC's.

Assuming that marine players actually die and aren't somehow teleported back to their dropship via a millitary-nanite-construction-grid-phase-thingy to be treated before coming back through the IP; what about a small innocuous alien that can make some use of a marine corpse? The possibilities are endless:
Use it as a meat shield on its back to take turret fire
Take shambling control of the torso and limbs (though this gets a bit zombie-esque)
Build a wall with frontiersman motif
Turn the corpse into a booby trap - perhaps a xenicide like bomb inside it
Create a decoy for the motion sensors
Give the commander a million "need order" spams from the "dead" marine
Those little floaty things in the new concept art would suit that sort of role perfectly.
Speaking of custom things - what about custom chambers for the aliens, like chambers that work like venus flytraps or ones that put out a flashbang effect (CS ref).
Just some thoughts

Lerk with Web and devour and parasite.
I'd have a lot of fun with that. Offensive would be to devour once webbed. Everything else would be to parasite and grow intelligence (if they get pissed and run after you.. webbed..

i agree with that but instead of devour, what about a parasite. so lerk will become more of a support class.
