Surprise Rushes focuses on the principal of doing the most amount of damage in the least amount of time. Usually used in desperation, this strategy can be a huge gamble but can also have huge benefits. The target of this strategy is usually important places like marine start or a hive room.

Implementation

This strategy is a simple strategy to pull off. In general, these rushes usually involve large portions of the team rallying to a certain point near the place to be rushed (or building a phase gate and beaconing, depending on the team). This large group of players then rush in to the location all at once and immediately go for the main targets (which can be anything really).

The critical part of this strategy is that the team to be rushed has as little warning as possible, so that the rushing players encounter the least amount of resistance and can do as much damage as possible. That’s why speed is of the essence.

This strategy is usually used towards the end of the game when the game is nearly over because it is a very risky move to make. The benefits can be enormous, but the cost can be much greater if it isn’t done right.

Effects

The effects of this strategy can either be very good or very bad, depending on whether you succeed or fail.

Success

  • The objective is taken down
  • Gives your team some time to recover
  • Gives your team an opportunity to do more damage while the enemy team is in chaos
  • Slows down future enemy teching or new equipment because the enemy has to replace the losses

Failure

  • The objective is not taken down
  • Gives the enemy some time to mount a more effective counter-attack
  • Potential loss of resources from life forms dying
  • Potential loss of the front lines with many life forms and players dead and currently re-spawning.

Tips

Marines

Ninja. Who ever said the rambo was useless? Sending 1 or 2 marines to “ninja” to a hive which doesn’t have much alien activity can be a big advantage. Let the marine build a phase gate near the hive and beacon your marines back when it’s done. Drop a couple of shotguns and tell everyone to go through the phase gate and shoot down the hive. The hive will go down very quickly, usually before the alien team can effectively respond.

Aliens

Cloaking or walking to the rally point is highly encouraged. This gives the marines the least amount of warning because they can’t see any alien activity with their motion tracking.

Global

Distract the enemy. Giving the enemy something to fight distracts them, making them less paranoid and bringing less attention to the rushing squad. Try to give them something important to them but not as important to you (like an attempt to take down the second hive).

Give the enemy something too. Making the enemy team feel like they have a chance distracts them further and makes them focus even more on what isn’t important. Even if they take their objective it’ll allow your teammates to do much more damage than the opposing team can.
