Basically when trying to watch back a demo of a marine round from a pcw it caused NS to lockup, as did many of my other marine demos, however the same problem does not occur with alien demos. Puzl mentioned something about whether or not the server has cvar queries. So I took alien and marine demos on a server that doesn't have any cvar queries and both alien and marine demos played back perfectly.

We need to be clear about this.
Are you saying that the lockup only occurs if there is a cvar query?
Are you saying that the lockup never occurs for aliens, even if there is a cvar query?
Valve have to fix this issue, so we need to characterise it as clearly as possible.

Yeh none of my alien demos lockup, they all play fine, that's including the ones from the same matches as the marine demos that do lockup. So it's something to do with the marine rounds, most of them lockup by the time I start building the armoury or just get out of marine start. It's just strange that it's only the marine rounds that it happens on..
I can't imagine it being marine rounds then. I got a pm from exi|Oren last night saying he knew how to workaround the problem but couldn't reply to this topic. I've moved it to bug investigation so other's can pitch in with their input too.

I have maybe a dozen demos from 3.2 beta 1 (all marine demos) that crash both under viewdemo and playdemo. I found that if I skip past the part where it crashes (usually a few seconds in) with viewdemo, I can watch some new stuff, but then it crashes in a matter of seconds again.
What you can do (this is a really poor hack but at least you can view something rather than the NS startup screen) is use viewdemo to watch the demo, and keep the menu open (when you hit esc or console, the background is faded out and you don't see any kill messages, etc) and simply close the viewdemo control panel.
In easier terms:
viewdemo (file)
now just relocate or close the viewdemo control box, but don't hit esc to close the background menu.
