Before we start looking for a location, we want to make sure we will have enough people. Sound off here, as well as any friends you can bring who don't have a forum account. Day has been chosen, time and location will come.

Uh, I hate to sound stupid but we are talking about Vancouver, Canada, yes?
There's a Vancouver, Washington that is 200 miles in the opposite direction. Heh.
Actually it doesn't really matter, I'll still go if it's in either, depending on who's going to be there.

I'll commit to going when I get concrete details; exact estimated cost for the facility and details on whether or not I can bring my own computer. I've had several horrible experiences with these kind of events involving absent leadership. Who's going to be organizing this and worrying over the details? Unless someone decides to take responsibliity and takes control and makes this thing happen, this thing won't get off the ground.
I don't care what decisions are made as long as they are made and communicated and we can know what to expect. No surprises, please.

Definintly Doable!
I can re-post this in a couple forums to draw more traffic, but i'm sure some from the OldF community will be interested.
As far as location, it can easily be the last two we considered, either DMZ cyber cafe or the lanshop in SFU.
The owner from DMZ was very friendly, and I belive if we can get enough people coming, we may may be able to get the same rate of a noon-midnight for $15!
DMZ was also very accessible...it was in New West minisher, where kingsway turns into 12th street.
I don't remember anything too special about the SFU place.
But yeah I would be totally into it if we can get enough people coming.

Ok, before I phone DMZ/SFU lanshop and get prices and games list, we need to know roughly how many are coming. If you have friends who are NS enthusiasts as well and are interested in coming, get to them to post ASAP.
The more people we can fill in a lanshop, the more fun we will have, and the better pricing we will attain!
Edit: Sorry Rek, I didin't intend to steal your thread from you, if you wish to do the investigations, or know of other good locations, please feel free to add/take over.

To do a current headcount, it looks like 10 are interested in coming??
Talk to your friends and co-works people, lets try to make this 16, maybe even 20 or more!
I'll phone DMZ and that UBC (not sfu doh!) cafe today(if they're open) and find out the prices and what other games are available.
If they're open.

No problem Faust, I'm actually grateful for you taking over, as I'm at a music program right now and have pretty much no time...
Spread the word as much as possible. ~20 would be a great number, even more if possible.
- Saturday, August 13th
- 12pm - 12am
- If we get a group rate, and it is at DMZ, ~$16 per person (extra $1 for ded server cost, split among all), snacks + food extra
- You cannot bring your own comp, but you will be able to modify your game as much as you want (I would suggest making a rar of all your configs, sprites, models, etc and burning it)
I think DMZ is the best choice for a location. It's not very central, but easily accessible by public transpo, cheap group rate, a number of pizza places/restaurants nearby and computers provided.

I attempted to get a hold of the owner of DMZ yesterday, he was not available. He should be getting back to me later tonight. I will confirm the date with him, confirm price, and get an idea of what current games he is running. Please reply/PM me any more questions you need answers for.

There's been some trouble with the DMZ owner. Faust is talking with him, so I don't know the latest, but, last I heard, he wanted all money up front and he wouldn't allow us to use our own configs. Personally, I wouldn't agree to this. Faust is talking to him and I'm looking for other locations if it doesn't work out. If anyone can suggest a location, please feel free.

not using own configs is bad... does he mean we can't alter the key binds at all? or that we can't do it via copying off a disc?
Settler
Aug 4 2005, 05:50 PM
i think the owner wants the files and folders inaccessable.. so u can change your binds ingame but u cant copy your own config onto the computer....
Theres the lions lair on granville and helmecken, downtown... it has about 25 computers, pretty good. im not sure about prices or anything, ill try and check it out later.
That would be great Settler. I can't really check around much except for the north shore.
And yes, you can alter your binds, but you cant copy your own configs, which means rates, scripts, tracers, anything like that.

I just finished reading an email from the owner of DMZ. No, we will not have to make a fat down payment this weekend if we want to play there...but there is a different rule. DMZ opens at 12pm, we will want to show up at
11:30am, if you do not show up by 12:00pm your seat is up for grabs!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, for a refresher and some other details:
We will be doing this on
August 13th.
We will be lanning here:

This is DMZ internet cafe, they will be providing the computers (
this is not a BYOC event), which are 28 in total!
Yes, we will have HL1 mods awaiting us (including the latest version of ns of course!), Plus many, many other current games including some LOTR games and the mighty battlefield series (I'm not sure if they have BF2 available)!!!
Apparently transportation is quite simple, you just get off at the edmonds skytrain station and take the 112 bus all the way there, or drive of course.
No, we can not install software due to security issues. Sorry, no copying of scripts, rates, tracers etc. from your config.
The rates? We can play from noon saturday till midnight for only $15!!!!
Make sure to bring some extra moola for food and server rental ($15 divided between how many people come). If you do not want to stay for 12 hours, there are other great rates available.
I do, however, need to know who is going and how many ASAP in order to let the owner of DMZ know so he knows how many people should be on staff.
So what do you guys think? I'm all for it! what time do we want to do this? Is noon till midnight ok for everyone!!!
The owner would also like to stress that there is restaurants aplenty near his lan
shop.
Now for a list of what to bring and what to not bring (thanks to grepdashv for the original list):
Make sure to bring:
*$15 plus extra for food, transportation, and server rental
*headset/headphones, to help cut down on ambient noise factor
Do not bring:
*Computer and related peripherals(excluding headset/headpones, everything else is provided)
*Any software period. No games, configs, hacks, picture of tubgirl, nothing(at least none that will be loaded on DMZ's computers

)
* alcohol
* drugs
* a bad attitude
So here's what I need from all those coming, absolute confirmation that you will be there, and your first name!
I will start the list:
1. Joe (Faust)
Note: If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me, and I will find out for you.

Again, we don't have to do this for 12 hours, 6 hours can be fine, 6 hours also costs $10.

Get the word out more fawst! Make everyone go, even grep.
Although I think you'd do better to pick a date in September or something similar, people need all KINDS of advanced notice to be able to actually commit to something.
Even the FFT lan turned out to be 4 guys when I got there, until grep made some threatening phone calls and moogle and his crew showed up. THAT one was planned 4 months in advance, heh.
If I'm not working I can go. Although to be honest I hope I'm working, overtime on sautrdays is very very good

I'm afraid his policy on configs is too much. Programs, completely understandable, but a couple of text files?
I'm out on this, sorry.

Oh give me a break ReK!
Does it really matter if you can't run your scripts?
I thought we were just gonna sit back and have a good time, not a intense cal omega match???
Besides, can't IE view txt files directly anyway? just host yours on a webserver somewhere, and copy paste it in your config.
Better yet, copy your config into a email, and send it to yourself. Then access it at the lanshop and copy/paste it in.
No biggie.

Quite unfortunate the forum crashed before this could have been fully organized into fruition
Oh well, there didn't seem to be much of a turnout anyway. I personally don't have any plans to organize a new ns org van-lan anytime soon, what with PAX coming up, and the forum only open to playtesters and constis.

Alas, this was last year... and as you could see...the forum died just before we could finalize everything
I much appreciate the gesture though digz. I'm sure once the board is fully open to the public, we could attempt to organize something like this again.
