Full Version: Best Bernel (configs) For Hlds/ns?

So I read the pinned CPU-performance topic but that was rather confusing and there were conflicting statements. So which kernel and which configs are best for ns?

I'd also like to know which HZ-value is the best and whether to turn "Preemptible Kernel" on/off. And some sysctl-tweaks'd be nice too. tounge.gif

For the kernel I wonder which pachset should I use. Currently I'm using gentoo's own. I'd like to install a named patches rather than 20 different patches. tounge.gif

Thanks. smile-fix.gif

I use Hz setting of 200 on my server. To each his/her own however. I have a guide on my site which covers changing the hz setting in the linux kernel for Fedora Core systems. Since you are a gentoo man you should be able to figure out how to relate it to your setup.

See my sig for my guide website.

I'm fully aware how to configure kernel. It's not that. I need settings and values for them. tounge.gif

HZ settings should be 1000 or atleast 500, this is due to the fact that HL needs more clock cycles that a db server.  So, in short, turn off pre-emption, bump HZ to 1000, enable "Use register Arguments", :MTRR support",  use ACPI if you have it.

But your guide tells me to lower my HZ (which hopefully helps, since now I have 1000 and a laggy server).

I'm not sure about pre-emption either.

There're other users on the server so I can't boot it all the time. tounge.gif

Thanks for the great guides. I'm not noob in linux or with hlds but it's really strange when the hlds lags after a fresh install. And it didn't before.

You can do whatever you want, I'm just telling you what works for me. I do not use preemption.

Yaeh! That's what I want to know: what works for you! tounge.gif

You say your server lag but you don't give much info on what actually is lagging.

Does the ping increase substantially ?
What hardware are you using ?
Does the models freeze and start jumping around without cause ?
Are you using pingboost ?
What's your cpu usage when the lag occurs ?

Just a few small questions that might get you closer to a real answer.
