Hi folks.
How many of you run Cheating-Death on your servers? I'm interested in how well it has worked out for you.
How has it affected your player base? Do you retain players better? Do less new players join?
How effective have you found it at preventing cheats?
Thanks.

Its a great idea, but I don't use it.
CD Required Mode= Dead server
CD Optional Mode= What's the point.
This of course is my experience with it. If there was a way to make it server side only I would use it.

Well, not as a server op, but a player, I can say that CD always liked to crap out on me when the server changed maps back in my CS days.

There was talk of putting CD on the Mr|Server a while back, but we scrapped the idea for a couple reasons:
1) Supposedly it's not well maintained and many hacks go unnoticed
2) Server overhead...all we need is more wasted system resources
3) People were VERY against it for mainly reason #1 and the overall annoyance of it.
Advice for cutting down on hacking:
1) Learn how hacks work and what to look for.
2) Get some good admins and educate them on item #1.

i used to run it, and like edge said, it will kill your server. i would have a full server on weekends, but when it was on, noone would come.
also the fact that it used to come out with a small update almost on an hourly basis, and if the client / server versions didnt match, players were kicked.
CD is a good theoretical idea, but when you put the hammer to it, it just doesnt cut it.
i have gone with hlguard for a couple of years now, and the hacks it doesnt detect are obvious as day. so theres no real need for more than that, besides an admin to always stay on your server to watch over matches.

I tried HL Guard but it gave everyone rapid fire. Gig, did you have the fix for that?

if everyone is getting banned for rapidfire, disable burstfire detection. it has a problem with fades blinking ability.
as for hlguard giving everyone rapidfire weapons, i have seen it once on other servers with hlguard, but never has happened on mine. i use hlguard 1.72, i dont get why it does it on some and not on others.
on my server before i installed hlguard, amx_clexec plugin would always cause that problem, but i got a re-written version of it and has never happened since.

Features Wallhack block + rapidfire detection of HLGuard are incompatible to NS. Don't use them. The NS Team + HLG developers are already working on a Solution.
Cheating-Death worked out very well on our Server. The People come
because it is enabled

I would recommend running it in optional mode for Servers with smaller community first with different CD mediators - more rights for CD Players & less rights for no-cd Players are the key.

Optional CD, I find, is worse than Required CD, because you get bombarded with [NO CD] at the beginning of everyone's name.

hlguard or amx_clexec?
you can get hlguard 1.72 here
www.thezproject.org
and amx_clexec here
www.amxmod.net
its in the plugins section, just search for "admin_clexec" without the quotes.

I do now know about CD + NS but I ran CD + HLDM a few years ago. The hell started there. (WON days btw)
It actually got updated but it ment either the server or the client was always out date. Furthermore, CD hooks the clientdll. On VAC servers this means no CD. (ok, I know NS has no VAC and WON did not have it, but just mentioning)
But the real hell of CD came that it actually did NOT hook the damned game dll. How anoying to get kicked of your own server cause the damn CD would not hook the game. I tried it all. I ran beta after beta, some worked, then they changed stuff (sometimes not even remotely related to dll hooking if you see the changelogs) and it failed again.
One way which lasted long to get in was to get the server IP, close HL, loadup CD AND HL by a CD shortcut, and directly connect to the server by the same shortcut while you were at it. 50% chance it worked.
Naturally, if it finally did hook the dll for a change, there was a good change I suddenly could not access the serverlist, so I could only connect by above shortcut.
In the last few years I never ran CD on my HLDM server again, but sometimes I play mods like NS and tried to get on a CD server with the latest CD, which I quickly downloaded.
Needless to say it still refuses to hook the dll. The CD forums never gave a working solution, betas never gave a working solution and the search function showed that more ppl had the same damn problem.
gg CD.

cheating death is probably the most retarded form of anti-cheat software for hlds. i never had as many problems you had with it, but the server / client versions were always different making it almost impossible for the client to connect to the server.
i think cheating deaths days are over, it was never really popular in the first place because of all of the problems with it, and still there were hacks that could evade it, and hacked versions of cheating death clients that would just tell the server "im hack free" when in fact the client had multiple hacks running at the same time.
hlguard is a better solution, as it doesnt require the client machine to have it also, and you can hide it in your server so only smarter players know its there. but, it still has alot of holes in it due to it not being updated regularly. but still the best way to stop hackers in their tracks is to have an admin sitting in spectator mode watching for cheaters.
