I know this ability is good for getting ahead, but when does it actually do damage?
Been several times where I got adrenaline and leapspamming on a marine... but did that help

Nope ^_^
Is there any sense in using it during CLOSE combat?

I've been wondering that too... When does it do the damage...?

It does damage on contact per time.
This systems allows you to instagib a vanilla marine.
Just walk on the ceiling on look down. Once a marine is directly beneath you leap on his head. You are in contact with your target for ~1 second, dealing massive amounts of damage.

I usually do that dead from above just by dropping down and chomping

But I gotta try that out afterwards. Usually I dont have the chance to ambush somebody once we've got the 2nd hive. Some of dem bad rines already got motiontracking or whatever that just makes them see me, no matter if cloaked or not

Leap does 80 damage over 1 second if you're in continuous contact with a marine.
It used to be instagib as damage from leap, charge, welders and also the infamous infinity JP then was determined by framerates.
Now it's locked by this fixed value.
Since you'll probably spend 3/4 of a second of the leap on getting to the target, you'll be doing very little damage to the marine. Perhaps 5-15 damage. But it's enough to get rid of the +5 armour marines are carrying around now.
Don't bother to leap anyone to death though, just bite. It ain't easy to keep stuck on the marine for a full second, and biting is faster, and lets you dodge bullets.

leaping is good for only moving around then... and only before getting celerity stage 3... then you don't most likely need to leap...

If you believe in yourself you could try to leap that remaining 5hp. Many people finish it off with para but if you have go for it!

Works best in vents as you can't miss in a 1 way narrow vent, but then again you'll probably die unless you get the surprise attack first.

You will definitely die. You can get 2 bites off in the time taken for 1 full leap.
And for the curious, charge does 160 per sec.

If you think so, try that in a game of combat

.
In truth, speed is key for skulks. Celerity is nice, leap is faster thus better, and celerity leap is best.

Leap to

, bite a couple times, leap to ceiling to divert his fire, then drop back down to FINISH HIM!

Or, take advantage of the new armor system (so leap/para kills are no longer leet)
chomp, chomp, para/leap.
You'd think leap does more damage (A 60 lb skulk flying at 100mph swinging its claws...) but its still fun

Problem is that its bit tricky due the charge/leap hits versus marine hitboxes. But if you miss you can easily swoop in to bite.

I choose Silence over Celerity.
No matter how fast I am, my "tick tick tick" feet always reveals me and I end up being slice n diced by hailing bullets

With silence lvl3, I can even ambush a rine without me crying the leap

Ow owwww and bite is also quiet ^_^

I alwqays use celerity... I think i might try silence though.... lets get back on topic though.
Silence and celerity do not effect the damage leap does.

Silence works extremely well with leap, since you move extremely fast, but undetectably. It's the perfect ambushing combo (except for maybe Blink/Silence).
Adrenaline is very effective against people who can't aim well. You can rapidly leap around them and they won't be able to scratch you. Once they reload, leap at them and bite.
