I am not sure if it is not supposed too, like the makers do not want it too, or if they did not know it did but I DLed NS and have CS 1.6, given for free with CS: Condition Zero. By making a shorcut to the HL program and adding some commands to the target line (all of which was told to me by a friend, I do not know anough about computers to have done it myself), I can run steam and then run NS perfectly fine. I thought any of the people who made the game might be interested in knowing this but I will refrain from posting just what I added to the 'target' line in case it's like hacking or something.

NS will only run if you can run HL1 through Steam. Obviously, you found some way to access HL1, allowing you to play NS.
Akisohida
Why would it only work with HL1? HL1 and CS have the same engine, do they not? I only own CS 1.6 and CS: CZ. The only thing I have found is that I have to manually start steam instead of it running when I run NS.
Akisohida
I would like to post how to get NS to work with CS 1.6 but I want the go-ahead of an admin for NS before I do so.
Heavy_D
NS depends on a few of the files that came with half-life, which wouldn't have been included with CS 1.6 or CS:CZ. I'm pretty sure any steam account with a HL product now entitles you to download Half-Life off steam, so what you'll need to do is preload the HL game content. As far as I know there's no other workaround for the missing files, even if the engine you have is technically capable of running NS.
Akisohida
I only understood some of that so I assume that perhaps Deleted Scenes or the Codename Gordon must have DLed the files but I can also say NS would not work untill I tweaked the 'target' line but, as I said, I do not want to say more without permission.

I'm interested.
TBH, I doubt anyone except valve would be annoyed if you posted such a hack, and they don't browse the forums. If it's unwanted, someone will report it, and it will get editted out.

PM someone (=Nem0) about it. Tell him Blue sent you. wink-fix.gif Hah.

Additionally, if your hack is valid, the FAQ needs to be updated. (And it's my fault it says "NS does not work with CS1.6" in the first place... nerd-fix.gif )
End
well you can't play cs 1.6 with out hl1 install

lol, yes you can, all you have to do for CS 1.6 to work is to download either the full steam client or the CS only one, and you don't need to install HL1 at all. All you need is any HL key and you can use any original HL product through steam

Ah, but can you play NS on a bought copy of CS retail? I thought not, but orginal poster seems to disagree.

And you do need Hl1 to play cd1.6, in a manner of speaking. Once you've got Cs1.6 setup to play you'll notice Half-life has appeared on the "my games list". (If it hasn't, it will at least have had a large amount of it's cache downloaded,) as it's base cache is the same as that of CS 1.6

Well, let's remember that his friend apparently helped him out, possibly more than he realized?

Somehow I doubt a few extra lines on the command line somehow got NS to work with CS 1.6 when it never did previously.

Something else is afoot! =P

*raises hand* I'm the friend mentioned, and can say that I never hacked anything about NS, just made a few point-outs on the files of both NS and HL _and_ CS 1.6, discovering that with a few words, it works...

Surely CS is a mod, NOT an engine. HL is an engine. CS runs on HL as does NS. So you probably have the relevent HL files in order to play NS.

I highly doubt there'd be a way to run a mod on a mod, especially without having the engine files.....if that makes any sense.

But fair do's, you got it working! Now go play! tounge.gif
Jarod
Like mentioned somewhere above, all you need is the file cache of HL, that you get with cs 1.6, since it uses it. And even without actually owning HL1, you can play NS, as proved here...

"Prooved" is stretching it. We want specifics! SPECIFICS! tounge.gif
Lt_Patch
Aye, proved is very stretching.

Nothing had been proved here, as all we have are a few people shouting out as to how they "beat the system", and can play NS without the HL1 engine and files needed for NS to run.

Nothing is proven until we have *PROOF* of it actually working.
Jarod
just get the go-aheads from an admin and allow to post the methods that make it possible...
