Hello, uber noob here.
i reacently went on a server marked "learning server" and asked if i could comm. i told them i was new and all that and they said yes.
first of all, we lost. i was expecting it but the people who were there we ok about it. Then some (oviouse) veteran came on and he was realy uptight about me comm'ing. Getting all anoyed when i placed a second Amoury on the other side of a PG, telling me to get out cause i suck and it was a waste of RP. All caps text, the full works.
so i left the marine team and went alien, where it was the total oposite reaction, i never had much luck as aliens, but ive got the hang of it now that the REALY helpfull guy on there told me what to do and how to play it, (sorry i forget your name. but thanks alot for not being the **** on the other team

)
but to my point. Anyone know a good server where i wont get spammed by Veterans for comm'ing as a noob?

Best thing to do:
A) Get bots.
B) Install the bots on your hard drive.
C) Set up a listen server.
D) Since most bots can't comm (theres one type of bot that can, but does a bad job) go ahead and get in the comm chair.
http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....showtopic=75671This is a thread containing most of the main-stream NS bots in use today.
Once you understand the basics of comming, and are relatively good at it, go ahead and try a amaetur server. Don't try most public servers yet until you think you are ready. Being a public really-good comm, takes a bit of practice, as there is much demand inside your team, and you really have to pay attention to things.

Sounds like you have just had a bad experiance thats all, most people are willing to help a new player to get better. Thier are just a few rotten apples in a bunch thats all.
Try and find a server with a pace that suits you with nice freindly people and is well admined.
Newbie: A person willing to learn.
Noob: A new player not willing to learn and take anything in.
Its obvious to me you are not a noob since you are willing to learn, sounds like the vet had his head up his a***
Cakes way is a good way to learn the layout of the controls and how all the upgrades and tech tree works, it doesnt give you a feel of the game though as people in real life wont always do what you say.
The best way once you have got the hang of the controls is simply to get in the chair in a real game and comm a few rounds, as you did explain you are new and most people will be ok with it.

If people are REAL players, they will understand if it's a new comm and instead of trying to boot them, just play better to support the team and not expect so much from the comm.

one way I just started learning to comm....
Get a friend and hijack a server playing an NS map, start building stuff, people usually come, and when you get 2 or 3 teammates just jump in the chair. If nothing else you can use the first few minutes to familliarize yourself with the tech tree and the general key layout for comm commands. Plus when u play 1v1 in NS, u rack up a whole lot of res, so u really can do pretty much whatever you want.

If you look through the list of NS games there should be at least one that is a marine trainer running bots for the aliens. It is not a horrible one to play on, though make sure there is a person there playing, because 1 person vs 2 aliens when you have to comm, and build is not fun.

watching and noting what other experienced comm's do ingame can also help.

As a marine observe what commander do, you will learrn a lot. Remember, before comm you must learn to be a good marine.

newb comms..you must play marine first.. good marines will become better comms! also make sure you go on a server for a week b4 becoming comm!
players are much happier seeing a person they know rather then a stranger that just downloaded Ns.

Steps to becoming a good comm:
1) get experience
2) drop meds/ammo
Really, don't play with bots, they just waste your time. Go download some commander demos from www.ampednews.com and watch how commanders do things. After you get a basic feel for how the game goes play in pubs.
NEVER BUILD TURRETS IN BASE
NEVER TRY TO "LOCKDOWN" EVERYTHING
DO NOT ELEC ANY NODES BESIDE HIVE NODES (rare anyway)
Always have the arms lab going a1->w1->w2->a2/w3->w3->a3
Just play the game, it is the only way you will learn. Playing with bots is not a good idea at all. Don't ask to command either, just get in and as long as you get upgrades and dont tf farm stuff people wont care that much. Field armories are only good if you dont have pgs. Always remember that mt is NOT the counter to sensory. If the alien team goes sensory get obs at choke points.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THE SECOND HIVE, NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT.

Look for strategies on maps, and read them through. This seems to help you just jump in the chair and know what to do (or it did for me...).

Just stay marine for awhile, and observe how the commander comms,

One thing I'd like to add is, surely a veteran should stay away from a "learning server". Next time explain to them why they should **** off, because they are a bane upon the NS Community.
I find that playing the siege maps first are good for comming, because you get the 5 min calm for building, first time I've ever been the winning comm in my two years playing :o

learn the tech paths
learn the siege distances/base layouts
learn not to spam voice comm
then, just practice.
