Beautiful job, I'd reccomend it as a prerequisite to actually playing the game. Available on the main screen right on top of "Join New Game." I do realize that the game gives the new people a run-down of the kharaa, but is there any chance of a version going into detail on them? Possibly touching on chamber-dropping ethics and the like as well as the basic premise of the team's gameplay?
Meat_Popsicle

chamber ethics? the new player will probably be overwhelmed as it is, its all about teaching them the fundamentals, the rest they can pick up for themself
can an admin plz sticky this

Encredible, I thought it would be a waste of my time, but it is very informative, ambient, and gives us a TASTE of what NS would be in single player! GET THIS NOW! It's not just a training map, like I said it's a taste of NS single player.
If NS Single Player evers comes along, even if it's 3rd party, I expect the team that worked on this to be there.
Encredible. Should be in the official release.
Th onos part scared me so badly! I was like "OMG!111 a heavy!11 ONOH PEWP!"
The recordings are clear, and get the point across with minimum bs.
Visuals: Gives me a great sense of infestation, of which I havent felt in a long while.
Greenie.... =] I was expecting a recording of a 13 year old going "OGMF u NOOB BULD TEH OBS!111"
Okay. 'nuff reading. Download this... And Sticky it!

What about an alien training map?
Meat_Popsicle
Apr 28 2005, 04:00 PM
the idea is is u learn about the aliens from a marine perspective (which is where most beginners shuld start playing the game), the map contains everything u need to kno to do get u on to a server as a marine player and not be a compelte waste of res. by playing *against* the aliens u will subcontiously pick up how to play *as* the aliens. theres no real need for 2 maps and theres also a lot more practical issues

That's a 100% incorrect way of looking at things, in order for a training map to be complete it certainly needs a way to learn the differences between aliens and marines..
Meat_Popsicle
Apr 28 2005, 09:41 PM
i hav to disagree with this for 2 reasons:
1) look at other strategy games, u dont get training for all the teams, cos ppl wont sit thru more than one training mission, most ppl want just enough to get them going, as they find training boring
2) theres no way i (or any other mapper) culd blagg an alien training map like i did the marine map, i wuld of made one if it was technically possible to do everything ud expect from it, but its just not, it wuld require much more coding than a marine based one

Except in other strategy games, you play the same interface.. NS is different.. melee vs. ranged weapons, it's shared/solo res.. That kind of difference can't be conveyed by only a marine based map.

Yes, I agree, it's currently impossible based on how NS is setup to support such a thing...

Wow.
Very comprehensive training, as long as the new players can understand english they are fine. Also, it was a very atmospheric thing. Despite playing NS for 3 years and seeing all sorts of things, playing it just now in single player mode, albeit as a training map, was stunning.
The atmosphere...check. Suspense...check. Fear...check. It could be really awesome.

Yes you get TOLD what the Kharaa are, and what their different classes are, but PLAYING them is quite different

I don't play with steam. is there any way to play the ns_training in a normal half-life program?
Meat_Popsicle
May 15 2005, 11:33 PM
hmmm good question and tbh i really dont know, all i do kno is u definately need half-life and ns installed, i dont see why it shuldnt work on a non steam version of hl tho as steam maintains the same directory structure for backwards compatibility
whos knows tho, try it and lemme kno if it works

May 20 2005, 09:43 PM
Don't worry about this anymore. I managed to play it. However, i can't hear what i should be hearing... I put developer 2 in the console to know if there was some sound and it has, but i can't hear it...
Meat_Popsicle
May 21 2005, 09:28 AM
its probably a path problem, while the rest of the mod stays in the half-life/nstraining folder, i believe the sounds need to go in half-life/ns/sound/ns_training
the installer was only designed to work with steam so ull hav to organise things like ive mentioned above for it to work
Artuca
May 21 2005, 03:13 PM
No... I still can't hear them. I have my directory like this:
c:\Sierra\Half-Life\ns\sound\ns_training
c:\Sierra\Half-Life\train\(mod location)
c:\Sierra\Half-Life\train\sound
c:\Sierra\Half-Life\ns\scripts\ns_training_end
c:\Sierra\Half-Life\train\scripts\ns_training_end
Meat_Popsicle
May 22 2005, 10:27 AM
heres how it shuld be..
half-Life\ns\sound\ns_training
half-life\ns\scripts\ns_training_end
half-life\nstraining // main mod folder
half-life\nstraining\addons
half-life\nstraining\cl_dlls
half-life\nstraining\maps
half-life\nstraining\models
half-life\nstraining\resource
just out of interest, wat version of ns do u hav installed?
Artuca
May 22 2005, 07:25 PM
Natural Selection (beta 5).
No i can't hear...
Just a question:
When I start ns training, should i see the NS backgroun in the menu, or the HL background?

maybe make a ns_training2 map for things like commanding, playing WITH the team (not ramboing) and how to not screw your team as a gorge
<edit> This nakes em want to have a single player version of NS</edit>

Artuca, u shuld see the ns background yeh, ur not using the shortcut provided r u?
i dont kno wat else to suggest im afraid other than buy steam and download ns 3
ShotInTheHead, i wuld but this map alone was far from easy or quick to make, if anyone else wuld like to go into that much detail in a training map be my guest

Having just found this thread from a google search on comm'ing, I wanted to thank you for creating this training program. I only started playing NS a few days ago (not played many games either mind) and have until now, tried to stick to Combat because of it's simplicity. I've commed once and well, stick an utter newb in the comchair and you know what happens.

Now I've played through this, I actually have a much better idea of what to do and how to do it and won't end up panicking and randomly placing turrets until the nasty aliens go away. Cheers.

Great job!!!

I laughed when I could not join the alien team... then I started crying...
Hope that the NS developers want you to join their team !!!... they should really make a single player!!!...
Never realized how great that would be...
its one thing to have a great multiplayer game... and I always thought that the single player was none importent... but im wrong now... It would create an atmosphere for alot of people... new and elites... you would start feeling like your really a part of the game... give the single player a shot!!!
"do it"
look further down....

Played through it, quite excellent.
however, noticed some bugs/aesthetic things that could do with changing. hope you dont mind a bit of critque.
first off, the lip around the ladder down to holography, it dosnt need to be there. you have to crouch to get onto the ladder, and for the new fps player it will confuse. not something big mind you, but user friendlyness and all that.
second, during the holographic briefing, i think something borked. it briefed me on the fade first, then the gorge. then the onos and the chambers. there was no briefing on the skulk, or the lerk. yet, the skulks holo and the lerks holo appeared first. there was also a 2 minute gap at the end where i had to sit waiting for the delayed holograms to stop appearing.
also, in the arms room where you recieve the HA/HMG, the briefings for the different weapons, the beginning of the recording is cut off. instead of saying "the knife: a close combat...." it says "...ife: a close combat...."
apart from those minor aesthetic bugs, top notch. include this in the main game and bada bing bada bang, you got yourself something nice.
excellent work.

the ns support for mp3's (i.e. the recordings u were having trouble with) is minimal at best, sometimes simply restarting the game seems to help but unfortunatly its outta my hands
