I've been practicing my bhop lately and I'm curious if I am hitting the speeds that I should be hitting.
Here is an easy way to find out how well you can bhop:
Download ns_bhop (link here:
http://pj.oldf.net/pub/maps/naturalselecti...aps/ns_bhop.zip ; if this goes down, you can probably find it through google).
Start a server with ns_bhop.
Go aliens.
Open up your console and type in "sv_cheats 1" without the quotes.
Then type in "cl_showspeed 1" without the quotes.
Now try bunnyhopping.
BTW, don't use celerity or leap, or any other ability/upgrade.
Skulk standard walking speed: 300 units/s
My highest sustained speed: ~410 units/s
I'm doing this without any scripts and I'm using the default HL movement controls (no mwheel +jump bind), so post your script/bind setup if you're using one.
With a 3jump script bound to my mwheel, I can hit ~500 units/s.
What are you guys hitting?

Sorry that this doesn't answer your question, but I think that b-hopping is useless. Yes, it helps you win and whatnot, but try playing without it. More of a challenge, and more fun.
And it looks ridiculous when anyone does it ...

510 with a 3jump on spacebar and 520 with +jump on spacebar.

The actual limit for a skulk is 870 units of speed. However, if you are moving faster than 493 units, then upon jumping, you will be slowed to 493.

Telling someone to not bunnyhop is like telling them not to, say, ambush marines or use parasite. Bunnyhopping is as much a part of the game as those.

try maintaining 500, while spiking to 520 after 3 hops. Then youo're bunny hopping like a pro

I'd say the greatest challange is reaching as high a speed as possible as quickly as possible. Reaching max speed is in my opinion not as important as getting a speed increase quickly... although if you can do that well you most definately will be able to reach max speed as well.

i use bhop to get around the map faster, but i still think the good old ambush is better for killing them then a fast bunny rush, even at close range, they can usually hear u comming.
they wont shoot at you if they dont know u are there

i usually maintan about 400 + after 2-3 hops without script/ mwheel binds. i think i'm noy turning enough to reach max speed but the corridors are so tight

B-hopping really is not part of the game; it is a bug in the half life engine, that was left in because so many people didn't wish for it to be taken out.
Let's not turn this into an argument about b-hopping; there is one in general discussions.

Fastest bhp speed: 645
Average bhop speed: 600
Max leap speed 1088

Feb 14 2005, 06:48 PM
just tested, but i didnt bother with cele or leep
with no scipts i average 450 - 510, but i still muck up now and then
with the 3jump script i was keeping it well above 500 after the first few jumps
but yeah i agree that the acceleration is really important, something that im gonna try and work on. ( i mean normal movement/jumping to accerate, not just leeping to start your bunnyhop, being able to accelerate yourself quickly is needed in the early game with just one hive)

okay 2_of_8 enough arguing with civ, we all know he knows what he is talking about
yes bunnyhopping is a bug, but flayra [creator of the game and owner of all the rights] made a concious choice to make it part of the aliens game

i cant really check the speed and concentrate at the same time, and demos dont have showspeed so i uploaded a small (5.1 mb) demo of me jumping around ns_veil. feel free to view it :o
i use a 3jump script bound to mousewheel, or alternatively just +jump.

just out of curiosity, do any of you bhop backwards?
i can do it backwards just as good as i can going forwards, its the exact same movements, only, mm, you cant see were your goin

id say it must look pretty damn weird seeing a skulk bunnyhopping backwards O_o

i can but i usually dont do it much, i do sometimes as a gorge to mess around.
i usually maintain a 500 - 510 speed while bhopping.
out of curiosity how do you guys start your bhop?
i do the thing where you look almost behind you and quickly bring your mouse in the desired direction of motion.
that usually gets a good start to a bhop for me.

I start with a 30-45 degree glide-jump that brings me to 400-430 speed. I can usually get to 500 speed in 2-3 jumps.

You can choose not to use bunnyhopping but do not get upset if people who master it put more people in the spawn queue than people who don't.

I can't ever move fast enought..

serious now, never checked.. I should.
Anywayz, enable "developer 2"
then "condebug 1"
then also set the almight "cl_showspeed 1" and it shoudl all be logged, no need to watch it.

Unless I get a good boost at the start, from a wall strafe, or glide-jump or something, I find it hard to accelerate bhopping. I get some increase in speed, but rarely make it to 400. How extreme should the turns be each hop?
Armageddon
Feb 15 2005, 06:47 PM
If you use scripts, you don't need to time the jumps since the script essentially does a "triple jump" just before you land. Using this fact, you can bunnyhop and keep a decent speed almost forever (unless you hit a wall). If your ground units are approaching 500-530, then you're going at the fastest speed a skulk can go.
And bhopping is not useless because it increases your speed so you can reach places on the map faster. In some cases, it makes you difficult to hit since you speed up towards a marine who might not have enough time to react.

a few ways
1) look at the ground at a 30-45 degree angle and run, you'll pick up a speed of ~400-430 ground units. At that point, you should start your bhop
2) do a wiggle jump. Basically you jump in the air and wiggle your mouse back and forth to exploit the hl physics engine and accelerate.
3) look to your right, then down, and left to make a half circle and strafe jump (i've only seen cloud king do it). You pick up 450 ground units almost instantly this way. (I can't do it D:)
4) strafe jump in the begining.
5) ask teh scriptz0rs from any clan in CAL that bh0ps.

One really can't compare their speed to anothers- it's very FPS dependant, you've got 100 actions in a second with 100FPS to build up speed, with a mere 20 FPS you've got 20 actions a second. A bhop of 460 could actually be very good depending on your specs.
On a perfect computer though, civ's right.
And a tip for people wanting to know how to start a Bhop quickly who don't want to lose their line of vision, even if it is the most effective way to pick up a bhop- try wall-strafing, it's got the same effect.

Wait, so wall-strafing makes you just as fast as b-hop?
Interesting.

noooo
wall strafing's max speed is a lot slower than bhopping.

Remember that you need to keep duck held down while hopping or youll go ALOT slower. Also use a 3 jump script and a mousewheel. Bhop is the way to get around the map but using it when fighting just gets you killed.

I do this, only i start to my left instead. Think of it this way.
I look to my left and down, while holding my right strafe key and my forward key, and at this time i press my crouch key.
This increases your speed cause your moving on 2 axis (front and right) and also cause you are looking down at the floor which increases your speed. By crouching you also get your sticky feet off the floor.
At this stage you are in the same position as you are every time your bunny hop touches the ground, and your ground speed is about 450ish. Which is a huge increase from the base speed which is like 290.
Then you fling your mouse forward/right into your jump, and if you land the bunny hops you can reach top speed of 500-520 in 2 or 3 jumps.
Its all one quick move that takes a split second to do.

Hi
I get something around 400 (with luck) and I would like to have a demo of someone who can get above 450 or something like that. You dont need to have the speed thing on. The demo should be for 3.0B5 because I downloaded one and it didnt work.
I wanna see what I'm doin wrong and learn from it.
Thank you

Skulk, I get 440 ground in one jump, 500 in 3 about up to 600 in air no upgrades 890 leap and 540 floor speed after one leap.
Gorge, 340 floor, 420 air.
Fade, 440 floor,490 in air, 719 blink.
Onos 420 floor, 480 in air, 590 charge floor speed
Now celerity.
Skulk 690 on floor, 800 in air, 1094 in leap
Fade, 560 on floor, 700 in air! damn max speed blink 944
Gorge 440 floor, 500 in air
Onos, 490 on floor, 550 in air, 890 charge on floor.
Hope this gives you a general idea but I am extremely good at bhopping so maybe not everyone will get those numbers.
Oh and yes, I do bhop when onos and fade. Onos speed is 240 -315 walking so hopping helps a great deal. Has for fade, when at zero hive, bhop is the only thing that can save you.
edit sorry can't send demos...
Ill add marine just for quicks
206 walk base speed, 310 strafing on wall, 286 wiggle walking script, 245 wiggle no script, 290 uphill hopping.
Oh and, every equipment possible downgrades speed of marines especially jp.

I spike over 500 at every so jump with +3jump script on mousewheel.
And bhopping backwards as gorge is a little easier, and I basically know all the contours of the maps so I can guess where to turn left or right ect.
besides if you running away, going forward is your best chance in any case
