My idea is pretty simple... the mapper would be able to control how many hives are in the map when the game starts, that way the mapper could control just how infested the ship/station/place is, and it would broaden the timeframe mappers could have in their map backgrounds.

Cool, then skulks can start out with leap and maybe xeno. A question though. Which hive does the first chamber type get assigned to? It could be coded so that the game can do it just fine, but the alien team would also want to know.
I don't care about the idea either way, I imagine it would only be part of custom maps.

Yes, I know the problem of the skulks starting with xeno... but I'm sure the mappers out there would find some way to balance it

I can only see this working if the map went through serious playtesting and had such a setup that it was made difficult for the Aliens. It could provide and interesting game variation but unless a huge amount of thought (as if the amount of thought that goes into NS mapping isn't enough) without which it would simply be a case of Marines starting with a double (or triple if three Hives) res node and some seriously large areas. If the latter were the case then the Marines would be most likely to camp before going on an all out offensive on a Hive (much like an RTS tankrush after 10 minutes building). I don't find that the most exhilerating of prospects.
It would be better (not neccessarily good mind) if the map was made up of two 'ends' with two Hives on one side and a Hive and MS on the other (these wouldn't be too close together). If Aliens randomly started in one of the two Hives on one side the game would essentially pan out like this:
- Marines take and protect Hive 3
- Aliens take Hive 2
- Either team makes an offensive on one of the Hives not in their possession, Marines fighting with decent upgrades and Aliens with 2 chambers and Hive 2 abilities.
Could be interesting, could be really, really bad.

make it so mappers can make team related buildings too!
Aka, aliens start with a couple OC and DC around the map, with 2 MC in each of the 2 hive rooms... and maybe 2 or 3 res nodes already.
Marines start in MS with some deactivated turrets (no factory) an arms lab with guns 1 and armor 1, and a couple SG's laying around... perhaps an UNBUILD CC and an UNBUILD IP already? Just to balance stuff out

Would make it really seem like the current players are NOT the first ones there!

This would be really nice for funmaps. I don't see how this would be balanced at all for a normal map, but for a siege map, it would be quite nice.
