Full Version: Aliens Retain Their Traits After Chambers Die

I think aliens should keep the traits they already evolved after the corresponding chambers are gone. Why? Because the alien has already evolved that trait, and no longer needs the chamber that taught it how to evolve the trait.

For example, Joe goes to the store today and buys a can of soda from a vending machine. He got the last soda in the machine. Does that mean he no longer has the soda since the vending machine is empty? (If nobody gets this, fine... I think in my own separate ways biggrin-fix.gif)

That's an interesting idea. A slight improvement to your analogy is that after he buys the soda, the vending machine is taken away or destroyed. Then again, are upgrades traits that are learned or benefits given by the chamber, and the upgrade process creates a link between the alien and the chambers?

I disagree at one point, agree on another.

Killing chambers should definately reduce upgrades. I like killing chambers as a marine to cripple alien upgrades. marines lose their upgrades if the arms lab dies, but get them all back if one is rebuilt. this is a good strategic part of the game and should stay in, however:

If an upgrade was 'greyed out' as chambers were killed, you could get your levels back as the chambers were rebuilt, even if all the chambers were destroyed.

the only difference that really exists here is that when all the chambers are destroyed, the upgrades mysteriously disappear rather than sit at 'level 0'.

marines get all their levels back with a new lab, same should follow for aliens for consistancy.

Okay. You say that killing chambers should reduce upgrades.... Why? The only reason I see is that "You like killing chambers as a marine to cripple alien upgrades". That's.... that's great. You like killing chambers. Why does this mean they shouldn't keep their upgrades?
Ghozer
why should aliens keep upgrades if a chamber/hive is destroyed, when marines lookse thiers if armoury/arms lab is destroyed? -- if you were to do this marines should then keep thier level 3 weapons should arms lab be destroyed.(as the weapon was already "built" whilst level 3 was there) .. in which case there would be absolutly no point in having this "option" and we should all just sit there with the same level and fight to the death...

it takes away the strategic aspect of destroying the upgrades, to make the enemy weaker and easier to kill...

Krad are you trying to say that

1) after chambers die aliens still have the upgrade but it is disabled and do not have to spend another 2 res after chambers are built again

or

2) after chambers die aliens still retain a working lvl 1/2/3 upgrade depending on how total chambers built before they they were killed

i'm all for 1 and not for 2
Krad
They should not keep the full level of the upgrade... maybe just level one, but they SHOULD keep the upgrade.
Quaunaut
Bad idea. Puts NS on a totally rotating point- Fades would never lose their upgrades, and that is definately a good strat when it comes down to how you do it. It'd decrease the amount people need to watch things, and thus increase the slip-slide effect.
Ghozer
this could only work IF... (and this could get complicated)

When an alien has Level 3 DC uprade (3 DC's basically)
all 3 DC's die, the alien keeps the upgrade, until it dies.. at which point it looses it and cannot re-upgrade it as the DC's are gone..

then works the same for Marines.. a marine gets given a HMG, with level 3 upgrade.. and the arms lab gets destroyed.. that marine should still beable to use that HMG at level 3 Untill the marine dies or the HMG is dropped..

you could argue that the HMG was 'built' as a level 3, so it should stay level 3 even when dropped (so marine 1 dies, marine 2 picks it up, its still level 3) but any NEW weapons are not level 3...

it just depends which way its done..

i believe thats the only way anything like this would work.. biggrin-fix.gif

Like i suggested, the upgrade could be greyed out and disabled until replacement chambers came along.

and yes, i like killing chambers.

muahhaha

It would take getting used to and greatly change strategies but I think this idea hold merit and fits better with the backstory. I'm giving it a:

*vote yes*

I give it a Meh,

The chambers themselves are what allow the alien to continue having his abilities. Removing them stops the communication and the alien can't use the ability...

To me this makes sense.. But it's certainly an interesting idea.

k. well abilities like caraprace i wouldnt see how they go away. caraprace is supposed to be a layer of cartilage(sp) stuff, so if chambers get destroyed i wouldnt see how those would go away. atleast instantly. i r konfuzzled.

I like the idea, that you should still retain the upgrade, but it should be greyed out, and not give you any bonus, until a chamber of that type is replaced.
