just creating a lan game and get error message unable to load C:\sierra\halflife\ns\cl_dlls\client.dll
iam runing a athlon 700 with voodoo3 sb16 512 meg ram windows me half life version1.1.1.0 any suggestions I hope I dont have to down load it again

Install the latest version of directx.

Im running XP Pro w/ Service Pack 1 (which contains DX 8.1), and I get the same error.

I recently reformatted and reinsatlled everything, but in the process lost my Half-Life CD, but I own C-S Retail and installed N-S on that (using the "dummy hl.exe"), and this error keeps poping up.

Any other suggestions?

I ahve the same problem.. I have both CS retail and Half-life and tried running it with both.. It gives me the error everytime it tries to get to the console.. however I have the clientdll for all three (CS,HL,and NS) NS is located here: C:\Sierra\Counter-Strike\ns\cl_dlls

My direct X is updated..., but hell I will try it again anyway.

I have same problem. Were all in the same boat together(lots of ppl get on boat)oops. bubble bubble...

Holy $hit, I just relized something. I thinks it's b/c we all are using CS retail. It might be a place to start for any programmers. Also I e-mailed the programmer to see if he has any idea. He might help... bye for now.

do you guys still have your file you downloaded to install?

I noticed it is named "ns_v1_win32_dedicated_server.zip"

I went to the site and found out that you cannot play NS with these.. this is for dedicated servers.. so go to http://www.natural-selection.org/ns_home.html and download the file named ns_install_v1.exe

Client DLL won't load

Problem:
when going to join a game or to the console the console does not load and the message "can not loug client.dll" appears, NS then closes.

solution:
You most likely downloaded the dedicated server and not the actual game. The server version will not allow you to play NS. just run a server.

to fix this go to http://natural-selection.org/ns_home.html and download the game.. it will save as an exe, not a zip..

you are looking for ns_install_v1.exe (the version will change in time of course) , not "ns_v1_linux_dedicated_server.tar.gz" or ns_v1_w32_dedicated_server.zip

Some of us do actually watch what we are downloading I have the same problem with the client.dll
I have the following config.
I run CS retail from D:\Counter-Strike
I installed Half Life to D:\Half-Life
I downloaded ns_install_v1.exe and installed it.

My CS and and HL (and therefor any mods running off HL) are completely seperate from each other, ie they dont share any files, dll's ect...

I still get this error. Now, the question is this. Which dll is being called for ? is it the:
half-life\ns\cl_dll\client.dll or is it the
half-life\valve\cl_dll\client.dll ?

I also have Win98 with Direct X 8.1 and latest GFX drivers. I personally think, although I could be wrong.. that it has to do with the newest server patch ?? Or was this problem there previous to the server patch ?

I shall keep fiddling, if I find a solution, you guys will be the first to know

hmmm after all that, the follwing occured....

I tried connecting to another server,,,and it worked....

What can I say,,, The problem appears to be simply that there are varying versions of client.dll in circulation !!

Yeah....

I get this error with Half Life retail.. it was working, I installed steam,
copied NS over after 'installing' all the steam related mods.. now when I
launch NS and either try to join a game or pull down the console I get
this can't find client.dll error - despite the fact that the dll does exist
in the path indicated.. it's about 2MB.. 2,064,384 to be exact..

I don't think their 1.0 problem is in anyway linked to your 2.0 problem
Yes, using the search option is always reccomended, but when the other topic is old enough to be from another version of NS, just don't bother responding to it. If it doesn't tell you what you need to know, either search again for newer info or start a thread about your problem and ask for possible solutions
