Full Version: Remake Of Maps From Other Hl-mods
Unknown Worlds Forums > Natural Selection > Natural Selection Creation > Mapping Forum
Kakaoo
I love to play maps that were originally designed for one HL-mod, on another. Like playing 2Fort on Counter-Strike. I tried putting de_dust2.bsp and cs_dust.wad in my NS folder, but obviously it didn't work correctly. I was wondering if it is a hard job to remake maps like cs_italy and de_dust2 for Natural Selection - and if someone would do it. Perhaps a Combat version would be easiest, I don't know, all I want is to play a semi-proper game tounge.gif

Thank you.

There is a co_cs_italy map that i've played on australian servers. Its kinda fun, except jetpackers and lerks have way too muc h fun flyign around aboe all the buildings.
Daedalus
There is a de_dust NS map, but it's way too small to be even a little bit fun.
Kakaoo
I searched for them, but only found comments on the maps, no download links...any idea where I can find them?

Thanks.

You're kidding, right?

Someone won't just give you their source because you want that map for another mod... seriously... confused-fix.gif

WHY???
BobTheJanitor
There exist combat maps based on many many CS maps and several TFC maps. I know I've seen 2fort as an MvM map before. The problem is that these are all based on decompiled or ripented versions of the original maps, which means they were done without the author's permission. That makes most people around here pretty unhappy.

And the other problem is that these maps are all designed for games where the players spend most of their time on the ground. So as soon as you get wallwalkers and flyers and blinkers the maps really start to show their obvious edges. There are skyboxes to bump off of, and many areas where you can look down and through the map because no one is going to texture the top of something you'll never see. And they weren't designed with melee vs. ranged combat in mind. So for example in the de_dust ripoff, someone put the hive right in the middle of terrorist spawn. This means that marines can stand waaaaaay down towards the other side of the map and shoot it happily while seeing any attacking alien before they have a chance to get close.

The only thing worse than co_de_dust is ns_dust. But we don't talk about that.

Easy guys, I know this is probably not very fun in the long terms, but if there are maps like that out there, I just want to try them for fun. Perhaps I will like them in the long terms even tounge.gif

Still noone?? And I'd like to get hold of that ns_dust too, I saw a screenie of it biggrin-fix.gif

co_dust
its an ok, map a little dark in some places, there is a place where JP can get stuck in the ceiling at the hive and onos sometimes have a hard time getting throguh the door under the bridge

ns_dust
i can't find it on ns world, and i'm too lazy to google it, but i've played it bofore and its not a good map

... because ns is so boring...
Kakaoo
Do you live inside my head since you know so much about me? Oh wait you obviously don't, since all you say is wrong. You are just a lonatic then. Oh well.

ns_duuuust....
Hybridclaw
actually i still have ns_dust on my hard drive.....
i'll say it again ns_dust is a bad map but if you really want it.......
(someone should tell me where i could upload a map on to the internet first.......)
TheDestroyer
Besides the recycle bin? How about a CD. Then you could microwave it. That would be more entertainment than actually playing NS on CS maps. tounge.gif

You MAY be able to use geocities or angelfire, unless the rules have changed since I last used them.

However, who was the first person to "port" maps, because I have a few words.
GiGaBiTe
if you want to convert maps from other mods, the easiest way without decompiling them is to ripent them. i did co_cs_office (MvM) and co_de_nuke (MvA) and working on co_helms_deep (MvM attack/defend) it took me a couple of hours for the first two maps, and im still thinking on what i should do for helms_deep.
Highno
How does ripent work? From my understanding its rip entities. But then I have to rebrush all areas?

www.ripway.com

You can get an account there and upload whatever you want (30mb)....even pics that are viewable on forums.....so just get an account in a hurry and upload that ns_dust, I'm sure it rocks tounge.gif

THANKS

ripent allows you to add/remove/edit all point entities in the map. No brush entities, no worldbrushes. Just point entities.
GiGaBiTe
and if your worried about people theifing your map conversion and claiming it as theirs, you can use stripper2 instead. you generate a script file that it loaded server side, and it removes and adds all of the entities upon map load. so when someone goes muhaha i take your conversion and use it on my server, they play the map on their server and go "WTH? where is all the spawns and ccs and stuff?" they need the script thats on the server to make the map work right.

also you can ripent more than point entities, if there are crates or something on the map that are func_walls or func_trains, you can get them to work fine in different areas of the map if you spend the time to give them new origins and paths.

ns_dust
co_dust is better......

you might need cs_dust.wad
cs_dust.wad
Kakaoo
Thanks alot biggrin-fix.gif now let's see if this works....

Fatal Error

Mod_NumForName: sprites/de_dust/joinr.spr

If you want to learn to use ripent, you want to read http://www.joe.to/cstrike/ents Ignore that it says cstrike, they're all halflife mods and there is actually a section in there on the creation of ns_dust. If you encounter any trouble, post in the map making section of the joe.to forum and someone will help you.

Ripent is quick and painless to use. But as people have already said here, can make some mappers very unhappy to have their maps changed. Although you can achieve the same effect using the Stripper2 plugin, and I don't know how someone could complain about that seeing as their map is unchanged.. simply being run on a server running a plugin.

That said, DECOMPILING IS OF SATAN. NEVER EVER DO IT AGAIN.

its also a good way to get banned from the forums, because most of us think of it as stealing our hard work no matter what your intentions might be.

The only thing worse than co_de_dust is ns_dust. But we don't talk about that.

I run several converted cs and de combat maps on my server, co_de_dust being the second most popular map on my server (co_de_simpsons being the most popular). You made dust sound terribly marine sided with the hive where I placed it, so let me show you some stats:
  • Marines: 3164 kills 2509 deaths
  • Aliens: 2509 kills 3164 deaths
Almost seems you made a good point, doesn't it? As far as the marines having a good spawn-kill advantage, you're correct, but...
  • Marines Won: 21 matches Aliens Won: 82 matches
...looks to me like it's rather biased towards the aliens, NOT against them.

I won't touch the moral issues there are with using ripent. It's been going on a lot longer (in one form or another) than most of us have been mapping. Converted maps from other mods are fun, and a nice change from the hum-drum norm.
