NS will always be free, but NS 2 won't. I think that's going to be a completely different game, though. It's funny when you think about it, you could look at NS as one big advertisement.
to clear up the rumour voogru has not left the dev team at this time.. But my understanding is real life is taking up much of his time.

back in the day freeshare stuff like wolfenstien was the best

Natural-Selection WILL NOT GO RETAIL, in order to do that they will have to sell their rights to VALVE, which they said they wont do.
But Natural-Selection TWO will be a retail game based on a next-gen engine.

Yeah, God, I mean, if you've coded for months to make a game, the LAST thing you want is to be PAID for it.
I doubt NS will be on its own engine. Flay will pay the liscence.
Yes, NS won't go retail. It has been stated many times that it will be free forever. However, NS2 will likely be retail and will be on a next generation engine.

Two things.
First, as hip and trendy as it might be to look down on Valve, I don't see many other developers funding college kids with a good idea. Yep, it gets Valve money, too. Is that something to be ashamed of?
Second, Charlie wants to play this through his own way. He owns UWE, UWE owns Natural Selection. So this mod will likely not go retail in any shape or form. If Charlie gets the funding, you might have to pay for a full-fledged NS2, though.
