I just installed Steam/HL/NS. I tried to start NS and it goes to the NS splash screen for 1/2 a second, then kicks me to the desktop with no error. Ive tried reinstalling Steam and NS, didn't help

. Any suggestions?

Did you run through the half-life training room before you installed ns?

Yes, I realized that after I installed NS, so I uninstalled NS and ran the HL training course, then reinstalled NS. Still kicks me.

Have you updated the drivers for things like your video and sound card? Do you get any error messages when ns crashes?

Yes, I last updated my vid/sound drivers no more then a month ago. No, I do not get an error message when NS crashes, just sends me back to the desktop with steam running.

Go to your ns folder. It should be in your valve folder, like this:
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\your@email\half-life\ns
What do you see in it?
Also, have you run a virus scan and spybot scan on your machine recently?

I see a whole bunch of files in the NS folder. I do have Adaware and Spybot S&D, but whenever I run those, my comp crashes and restarts (something to do with vdnt32.sys). Comp also crashes randomly due to that file. I haven't ran a virus scan in a while, I think I will right now.

No viruses found, NS still kicks to desktop.

What video mode are you running HL/NS in? It will be listed in half-life's options menu. It should be one of three things: software, D3D or OpenGL. Try setting it to OpenGL if it's not.
If that doesn't work, I think I'm going to need a little more information on your machine; such as processor, GPU, ram, internet connection etc. The more you can tell me the better.

Nice rig.
A few more questions: what is your operating system? If it's XP, are you using sp2? What is your internet connection?
Are you using the latest catalyst drivers, or the omegas?

Well, The only thing I can suggest is to try a full reinstall again. First, go to your HL folder and use the NS uninstaller. Then uninstall steam, and delete the entire steam folder (back up other mods first!). You might also want to try downloading the installer from another location - you could have gotten a bad install. (I recommend
http://www.nsarmslab.com/) Make sure you are downloading the beta 5 version.
Then, install it again in this order:
1) Steam installer. Let it connect to the internet and update completely.
2) Install HL from steam. Run through the training mission.
3) Install NS beta 5. Make sure you point the installer to the HL directory.
Hope that helps.
