A simple suggestion to avoid the 'What? We LOST? HOW!?!?!" syndrome in combat. You know the situation - you've just made it into the hive with five marines, the alien spawn queue is clogged, the hive is getting slammed, and suddenly... The aliens win. Quite a disappointment when the game was clearly a marine win in another five seconds. Since the timelimit has to be set somewhere, how do we fix this?
My suggestion is simply that once the time limit is up, marines stop respawning. This gives the last few marines that may still be alive a chance to take down the hive before they go down. It takes away from the 'cheated' feeling of losing by a few seconds worth of time. Now if time runs out, it all comes down to your own performance to take out the hive. When the time limit runs down to 0, just leave it flashing on the screen and perhaps even start playing the ping of death, or a similar sound, to indicate that no more marines will be spawning.
I can see a lot of very exciting game endings using this situation, instead of the current timelimit which leads to rather blah anticlimactic endings...

I know that situation, it is especially frustrating with a 10 min limit.
Though some sneaky JPer could play a little search and hide with the aliens. you got my vote.

Unless the idea of hiding jetpackers bugs you that much (it shouldn't: the aliens just held off a marine assault, often complete with jetpacks!), this idea is mind-blowingly excellent. Bob deserves a cookie.

For once I disagree with bob. Suppose your're a marine that died just after the time limit had ended. You're stuck in limbo until each and every marine is dead too. This would not be entirely fun, especially when people have wont of hiding in obscure vents just to prolong the game.

Personally i like the "oops times up" when the hive is on 3%. Makes it more exciting, the "oh my god sooo close!!" is brilliant. Although I do agree the idea is a good one and it has my vote.

This would only cause a rine loss though, so it would be benificial for the rine to at least try, as if he takes to long someone is gonna f4, meaning aliens will win.
Anyhow after 10 lvls most people will probably have SoF so finding him won't be a problem.

There's another alternative.
Aliens spawn automatically, instantly with all upgrades, and evolve to higher life forms at cheats_on speed.

At most you're looking at one or two minutes. SOMEONE on the team is bound to have SoF. And if no one does, someone is most likely about to respawn with spare points to spend from dying as a higher lifeform. There's a lot of upgrade churn in an average combat round. Really this is a lot less painful then some marine vent camping at the end of an NS game when you may have to wait for a whole hive to go up and SCs to be dropped before you can finally find him. I've watched games drag on for ten minutes like that before. I don't see anyone managing to drag it out very long in combat. Especially considering the size of co maps. There's just very few spots to hide, and everyone knows all the obvious places. It's not like an NS map where there can be literally dozens of vents and hidey nooks to check.
I see your point, but I don't see that as being a big enough issue to undermine how much more interesting and less aggravating this would make the last moments of a combat game.

hmmm I like the idea. There arent really all that many places u can hide on a combat map and there are no places u cant access as an alien.Only thing I could add would be to possibly cut resupply as well. This would stop HMG rines form camping at far ends of vents with an endlass supply of ammo and force them to make the final push on the hive(among other things).

I wouldn't be too worried about that. Even 6 skulks can eventually kill 6 HA/HMG/Welder/Resupply if they aren't respawning.
To combat people who hide, just make them visible like SoF.

A solution to this is the health reducing thing that hits aliens when the last hive is killed in classic.
and before you say 'what about resupply?' you could turn it off, or not, because the aliens have regen in classic or Lub-shack defence chambers in the same way.
resupplying marines are also very easy to find, what with all that noise the dropping medpacks would make.

Hahaha! An obvious solution to this problem that even I didn't see. Some lame marine has barricaded himself in a vent? Every alien rushes the CC. 5 - 10 aliens whacking a CC and it lasts about 2 seconds.

I wanted to see that after a team "wins", the losers just stop respawning and need to be totaly cleansed. its quite easy to search and destroy the last few survivers... but with this suggestion introduced.... whatever...

Always having survivors hang around would add a tiny extra bit of fun, but there's no reason for it. In NS mode the aliens could drop another hive, and the marines might be able to relocate (if they have a CC left) but in co, once the hive or CC goes down, that's it, there's no point in playing further.

I had another though - perhaps the aliens could get hive 3 armor when the timelimit runs out as well.

what about this: every upgrade gets free for the aliens after the time runs out.
Would have the marines realy need to have the hive destroyed before their buts get kicked.
Let's just say that the Aliens found a way to achieve ultimate superiority by implementing any upgrade into the critters...
imagine a 9 upgrade - 4 weapons - fade
"Cleanse that Installation or the Aliens will break out and infect the whole damn planet!"

Nah, I don't think aliens should suddenly get supar powars and stuff, its enough that the marines get picked off one by one. In smaller games, and larger co maps(like ulysses), this would add some tension.
