I only play NS_maps seems like the commanders never give me any high lvl armor or good guns to me at all which is stupid! Anyways are the aliens a better choice for new players?
That_Annoying_Kid
Officially the marines are the best place to start, but I went straight for aliens because I liked them better.

The command has to have resources to get access to the higher level armour / weapon upgrades, and also he needs resources to drop a decent amount of guns and Jetpacks/heavy armour. Get as many resource nodes as you can, try and take down as many alien ones as you can, work as a team and the higher level tech will come your way.

Aliens are fun in NS but learning to bunnyhop correctly will help you out greatly as it as an intended feature for the aliens. Also start playing with hud_fastwitch 1 that way you can start leaping and switching to bite mid leap and chomping marines, same goes for blinking in and out and swiping. Try playing on a server with good teamwork and helpfull people, server plugs are frowned upon but stop by the lunix monster [~ <-- to pull down console then connect 69.93.5.186:27015] and announce your new and that TAK sent you and your interested in learning the finer points to NS, you will usually find people willing to help you and give pointers, just watch out for the reserved slot kicked. Being good at this game boils down to learning all the little quirks in the game that give you a slight advantage and then utilizing them.
eggmac
you can of course try playing the alien side first and see if you like that game-style better. The aliens have a greater diversity of different lifeforms which requires different playing methods. And you're basically making your own choices and aren't dependent on somebody on your team as much as a marine does. Yet, it might be harder to play aliens first, since their melee attacks need some practice to become efficient at it.

The commander usually doesn't give away weapons to his players randomly because they cost a lot of resources and he has to choose his spendings wisely. You usually dont get many toys, so don't be too keen on them. I suggest you try to stick to other players when they run off, this increases your chances to survive as well as to kill the enemy. Often you will encounter higher life-forms though, which is hardly possible to kill on one's own.

Don't be frustrated if you die often in the beginning, everybody does. You need to play a couple of rounds to get the twist of it
TheAdj
When you're a new player, it's obvious to everyone, especially the commander. Don't expect weapons until you get better at the game, when you'll actually be able to utilize them effectively. Otherwise it's simply a waste of res to hand you a heavy machinegun if you're going to die to the first skulk you see. Hang with it and you'll get better stuff.
Legendary_Leviathan
Im sorry but this game is too unbalanced and needs to be seriously balanced before it gets a supporter to pay them 10k for the game...as well this game wont make a good marketing game because it simply takes too much practice to get into the online play of this game...
Toothy
Unless I'm very much mistaken, you were playing on the C.A.P server last night and you accused me of cheating when I went 52-2 as a Fade smile-fix.gif

If you're new to a mod, you should never accuse people of cheating because with no offence meant, you have absolutely no idea how the game works.

There are all sorts of tips, skills, and tactics that can help kill the opposition, but the best thing is practice.

On the CAP server we have people from all levels of experience, so instead of complaining or accusing someone of cheating, you could try asking them for advice. A lot of the time people will actually try to help you improve.

Try playing some combat, look for servers running co_maps and you can experience what some call 'ns deathmatch', get used to all the different upgrades and learn why some combinations of them make a very powerful opponent indeed.

NS is certainly not direly unbalanced, it may be slightly harder to get into than other very simplistic mods (cs, tfc), but believe me when I say it's well worth it smile-fix.gif

Toothy this game is a mimic of battlezone 1 & 2 seriously I have more fun playing those two games then this one. I cant get into a game that the learning curve is 12 hours or more to be honest I would rather play mario during that time then try and learn this game because if I cant have any fun at all in the first 10 mins of entering the game then its not a game for me...
theclam
Honestly smurf, any multiplayer game that has you going against people will take a very long time to get good at. Natural selection does have a high learning curve compared to some games like counter-strike. Still, it does take some work to be good at it. If you are interested in getting better the suggestions everyone has provided so far are quite good.

Also, don't complain about not getting high level armor and weapons as a marine, it's a big pet peeve for almost every comm. If I hear someone complaining about it, I will specifically not give them anything. Don't expect for heavy armor or jetpacks until about 15 minutes in the game, and only if your team has a reasonable amount of rts (>3). Most comms only give guns to the best players until the time jetpacks and heavy armor comes out. 2-4 shotguns are the same as an upgrade that will give EVERY marine an additional 10% damage, or an additional 20 armor, so it's more often better to get the upgrades than the guns.

Try asking for help and being polite, and if you are on a good server, you should get a lot of people helping you become much better.

Lately all games ive been playing I suck at and its p.i.s.s.i.n.g me off to the max I was 3x better when I was younger now im like crap and only good at games like FFXI and games on consoles...
theclam
Well first person shooters are one of the most difficult games to play multiplayer. Everyone is so much better than you for quite a while. You need good reflexes and quick thinking. Things can happen extremely fast (a skulk leaping around a corner can still sometimes scare the **** out of me). If you want to improve it takes a lot of work.
Condizzle
If 12 hours is too much to learn a game, then what games DO you play? Every multiplayer game takes a while to get good at it. For me, the best part of playing a game is thinking "WOW! I KILLED 3 SKULKS IN A ROW!"
jumpingjoda
Now i'm playing NS for almost a year, i can tell you that i sucked realy hard biggrin-fix.gif
The game itself has a different feel after so long time, i can predict most moves the enemy will make next and react instinctly.
All you need to do is play, the skill will develop. If you don't like the game, don't play it.
Legendary_Leviathan
Im using a old school pc and my mouse is old school its like a ball mouse with two buttons on it and all you people that have pay checks in the 1.5k a month can afford that new tech stuff. Like the laser mouses that now make it unfair for people who still play with ball mouses. Well thats what I think and no I dont hate the game at all dont ever try to say that to me before sending me a pm about it.

P.S I dont have a job and im only 17 years old.
theclam
Don't complain about having a bad computer if you don't have a job. Also, there are people playing with 500mhz celeron and they have it just as bad as you. A decent laser mouse will cost $20-30 anyway. Laser mice don't really give too much of an advantage.
Isamil
Paychecks of 1.5K a month? Thats 18K a year, which is uh...not much.

For me its usually
"Wait, the Fade didn't kill me while it was blinking around? <_< >_> Either he's merciful or I'm getting better"
Captain_Sparky
I started playing regular NS before combat. That's where I learned my skill. It will take a little while. Try playing your own lan game, and learn both aliens and marine hot keys, structure placement, and tricks to keep you alive such as building 3 dcs, two mcs and a few oc's in one spot.

It is if you're still in High School and your parents still pay for most of your food and rent.

Hello, i just recently started playing, maybe a week ago. I got tired of the cs players.
Player = Knows enough about games to point and shoot
Gamer = Knowledgeable on almost all platforms, able to come up with strategy(sidenote: arent **** when they die)
I just got sick of the little 100 pound **** who instantly become tough when they get on the internet.

Good because I personally hate CS because of the attitiude of so many of the players.

It sounds to me that a big problems is the NS learning curve, but your aim. Aiming takes practice, especially with the speed the aliens move at and the size of the skulk, thats a difficult target to hit, no matter how good you are. But with practice you'll get it.

Look for a server with beginner in the title or play on the weekends, I find its much easier to kill then as there are more average players playing at those times (thats what i find anyhow)

And like Toothy said you shouldn't call people cheaters when your new to a game, I was playing co_damios the other night and got to a score of 90-3 as fade, being told constantly by new players that I was cheating, using speed hacks, wall hacks etc. It doesn't annoy me but you don't know how the alien side works, so it can look like they are cheating when infact there not and just using alien upgrades.

Have a play about with both side, you might find your better at one than the other.
Legendary_Leviathan
I played both sides I find being aliens as gorge and taking res towers easy on you since you can collect res and upgrade at same time as for marines I want a team that speaks and uses the communication well and not just for bullcrap.

Well ive improuved ever since ive gotten this new laser mouse and that old one made it fustrating to aim and stuff well this laser mouse made my life easier and now I enjoy the game.

To be honest practice is what I needed and a new mouse for me too.

EDIT: My old mouse was a ball mouse and it made my life incredibly hard at playing games.
BobofLust
The best way to get a feel for the game is to find a combat server. This way most of the time therey ou wont have any pressure on you and you can learn and take your time learning the mechanics of both alien and marine.

I would suggest playing marine first, you would have most likely played a first person shooter and you also observe the aliens movements and ambush spots as your trying to kill them.

Dont give up now, like im sure youve heard b4 everyone was a newbie at one point ^_^.
Legendary_Leviathan
I hate combat its too much like the other fps games I own so I play NS. I wanted a different style of gameplay and I found it with this game. Combat is like a normal shooter boring and dosent help my skills at all.
Kester
Combat is only useful for target practice, and at that its very good, but I wouldn't suggest it to someone as a good way to a get a feel for the game. Thats like saying "play a few seige maps first, that'll let you know how NS is ment to be played".
BobofLust
Siege maps are under the custom map category, much different from ns maps.
Toothy
Combat does in fact help with skills, although you have to be careful.

Playing fade in combat will help you learn to get better at blinking, retreating, swiping etc, and timing.

However, you must be careful not to get used to having regen, carapace, celerity, regen etc because you will become overconfident in NS mode, and end up losing 50 res.

Combat is overall, good for practice.

I know what you mean... I played combat for about 2-3 months straight then played an NS map... ended up quickly getting my butt kicked. I learned the hard way that you don't charge head-on to a group of shotgun marines in NS...

Nor in CO for that matter...

They are very different. It's a far more complex game. Comanders could be scripted for siege maps, but certainly not NS maps.

OK, I was under the impression that "smurfing" was the attacking of a network by exploiting IP broadcast addressing and other aspects key to The Big Network we call dah Internet.

Who are you accusing of doing this? confused-fix.gif

indeed, I don't get it.

And: optical mouse with wire > everything else.

Practice at _ns maps, I started in version 2.0, and I loved it, be sure to play with people of the same country so you don't have a hard time communicating.
Be there for the team, do as ordered.

Smurfing = doing something under another alias.

The vets named "lol" and "^_^" you used to see on servers were smurfing.
