Can someone please tell me how someone gets a server set up? can i run a server on my computer?

Well couple of things. I wouldnt unless you have a good computer and a goood connection. I mean T1 type ****. And you cant have a router or no one will be able to join it. And if u dont it will lag so much if u have cable or even DSL. I would go with the more easier convienent way and just rent/buy one.

Er... For setting up a server is very similar to any other hl mod. There are two ways:

Dedicated: This is where you tick the box in setting up the server and it runs in a dos type window.

Non-dedicated: Where you actually play and host the server at the same time.

Also you gotta know what you might want to do, i.e. Maybe a LAN (local area network) game where only people connected to ur computer via RJ45 cables, or wireless settings.

It is also a good idea if you hosting a game on the web that you:
a. have a decent computer 1gb RAM and a maybe 2.8+ghz.
b. A nice connection to the internet, maybe 5mb or more will be sufficient.

Apart from that what you do is you customize the server how you want and set up how you want it to be, like the deicated bit and non-dedicated bit. If you had mIRC and connected to either Quakenet or GameSurge and join the channel #naturalseletion and described the problem, im sure quite a few will be willing to help you there.
