Full Version: Battlecry?

I remember when I used to play on the Team Fun server we sometime used to throw out battlecries. (we were really immersed into the game, like this one guy used to freak out and scream like a girl if a skulk ambushed him tounge.gif ) Ah yes the day where we used to do thing liek we meant it and for honor. If your squad's commrades was killed it was honorable to go bezerk for revenge. For many of us defeat was never an option. We play to win and fight it out to the end.

Anyways I haven't been able to play for awhile and I wonder if NS still has that magic of fighting besides you friends, a game where people will play in-character and help aide immersion. Anyone ever tried it? It's sooo much more fun to have everyone roleplaying in-character and doing things like it's for real.

One of the things we did to help teamspirit and be in character was to make battlecries or catch phrases, usually in Latin. (because they were all British and I like to use latin phrases) Here are some we used: (some are battlecies some are just phrases we like to use)

Dum spiramus tuebimur -- While we breathe we shall defend
Fabricati diem -- make my day
Facta, non verba -- deeds not words; actions speak loder than words
Cogito Ergo Sum. -- I think therefore I am
magister mundi sum -- I am master of the universe (when one is gloating because they just solo pwned some people)
Feles mala -- bad kitty (skulk)
Homo, aeterna -- Humanity everlasting (marine only)
Natura in maxima -- nature in the greatest (skulk only)
Nihil obstat -- nothing stands [in the/our way]
vivi ut vivas -- live that you may live (one of our favorites)
Vivat, crescat, floreat -- live, grow, flourish
Vivat Commande -- Long live the commander (marine only)
Periculum in mora -- there is danger/peril in delay
and anything we wanted after the word Pro (for) like: Pro coitem (actually we usually used pro alvarium or pro cubile as there was arguement as to which better translated as hive)

We liked to use the latin mostly because it sounds cool and most of the other people didn't know what it meant. Obviously we didn't talk exclusively in Latin but someone yelling out randomly pro coitem (for sex) would make the people who know what it mean in Latin laugh. tounge.gif

Anyways it doesn't have to be latin, in fact I usually like naming strategies I come up with not just to make it easy and brief but also to futher immersion. I just recommend acting in character. It's usually contageous if you do good acting (but not annoying).

So here's what my points/querries are for this thread:
What battlecries do you use?
What things do you do to help immersion?
I find that when we are all really into the game my skill increases more and excellent teamwork comes natural. Plus it's just a lot more fun. smile-fix.gif
Faskalia
Periculum in mora.........confused-fix.gif ahmmm are you shure that your translation is correct?
the_x5
I'm decently sure but I'm not perfect. tounge.gif

Tell me your stories people. smile-fix.gif

I think having a battlecry or just playing in-character well witha group of people is both part of an actual strategy to get everyone playing their best & teamworking and also to get more fun & enjoyment out of the game.
AlienCow
I like to keep it in English personally, but sometimes I do play the role of a true 'Rine. Even something as simple as adding "Sir" on the end of each request/statement/insult at the Comm makes it more fun, I think. biggrin-fix.gif

I didn't get your "Pro coitem (for sex)" thing, but I'm sure it would have been funny a coupla thousand years ago.
the_x5
I remember when we were all in Bast hanging on by a hair in engine room as the onii and fades we attacking and we we chanting "dum! spiramus! tuebimur!" to pep us up. It worked. We ended up turrning around the game and winning. I'm probably the only one who says Fabricati diem when I whip out my shotgun to do one-on-one with a fade. But most fo the time we didn't really use Latin, it was jsut a nice touch to have a new phrase every day. Some of them were just silly. I can't remember what some of the translations were but once we had the newbies chanting "eat my peaches" in Latin. Very amusing if a bit cruel. tounge.gif

Yep we also added sir. You always addressed you SL, FC, or CCC as Sir. It may seem like a minor thing but adding yes sir and no sir adds a lovely military flavor to the game and amke it really fun.

As aliens in character is like acting like a fat man after hot dogs: "I. Am. HUNGRY!" Saying "Bacon!" is now commonpalce but back then is was fun to have everyone go "It'sss bacon!!" at the same time. As alien is good to take your rage out on humanity. Imagine those marines are all the stupid people you hate and then get passionate about killing them. You can still use the yes sir / no sir as alien as it adds a lot of respect which in turn makes people usually more polite back to you. I dont' know how it is now but we usually let gorges be the "commanders" and the fades or best skulks be the squad leader, the onos was essentially no more than a big piece of mobile artillery the lerk was kinda like the support gunners. Good teamworking with lerks and fades or skulks can be really devastating.

But while all this adds atmosphere and fun to roleplay in-character, I feel that it also is a bit of a strategy in that it draws people into wanting to do their best. I feel I play much better when I have this immersion and we work much more fluidly and effectively as a team. It also helps encourage newbies to play. I remember on day I had a team with 50% newbies and we won against a team of all non-newbies because I took them by the hand and we got the job done.

"Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." -- a favorite T-Shirt of mine
(dustbowl defense for example, even newbies can understand the simplicity of kill enemies comming in though here and thus the fun and deadly firewall of teamworking nadespam was born)

I would love to hear some personal experience stories in this thread as well.

Heeh, I used to play in team fun in 1.04 and above.... I hope it wasnt me you were thinking of that screached. ^.^'
the_x5
What name did you go by Axel?

PS: If you don't recongnize me do you remember goddy, ZXNet, Wyld Thing, Paul Pyro, Rushakra, or any of these names: http://www.xzianthia.net/onos_power2.jpg

Tell me stories people, or what are some of the battle cries you use. smile-fix.gif Get a few friends and try it out. If have any question on how to be in character I'd love to offer tips.

I've quoted the Fronteirsman motto a couleof times whilefighting a valaiant end-game.

I had a habit of saying "THIS IS MAH BOOMSTICK!" whenever I got a shotgun or gl

For me, there's no greater inspirational cry than a hearty, "GOGOGOGOGO PHASE! PHASE YOU TARDS PHASE! GOGOGO! THE GLOWING CIRCLE YOU NUBLET MOVE YOUR ****! GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO!!"

That would be me in the cc, 5 seconds before either the phase goes down or the hive goes down biggrin-fix.gif .
the_x5
LoL! Ok, 5kyh16h91, but that not the kind of thing I was talking about. Do you guys ever try playing entirely in-character? Acting like you are a real marine or alien character in the story.
Bait_Boy
ehhh.... the silent marine? tounge.gif
with an occasional orkish battlecry when I phase into a hive or battle

skulk.gif Since when did the TSA start hiring orks!? wow.gif

How about "Carpe Onos!" Seize the Onos!
Condizzle
How about "Esstie effyu-us Noubus" biggrin-fix.gif
mirrodin
Sure, why not.

Seize the Gorge is now my MSN handle.

Off-topic: Anyone for a game of capture the gorge(ctg!!)? MvsM?

cg_ maps would pwn...

I was in an old clan once were we hate secret, priate-talk code and we played on all talk servers.

xD

That was around 2.0

"Yarr kill the skurvy on portside"

"Ahoy thar be onos!"

One time I shouted "For Overlord King Laharl!" and one guy laughed. Props if you know what game I'm speaking of.

I have a sound byte of an orc from Warcraft saying "For the horde!" that I used a few times before the server kicked me for "voice spamming." Haven't used it since.

rename the .jpg file to .zip and enjoy my all time favorite "battlecry" haha

Sometimes we just prep for an assault, wait for everyone to get ready, and either steam "Charge!" or just scream into the micraphone. "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
Cheese
hmm definately "DAKADAKADAKA"

I use this one if i run through the Hive with my HMG killing everything in Sight.
the_x5
Interesting battlecries... tounge.gif

Again though, has anyone ever tried playing in-character with a group of friends and found out that it actually improves your gameplay? (the battlecry and acting in-character working as a strategy in of itself)
Nuub
What I remember saying sometimes:
"I will die for our cause!"
"For the motherland!"
"Allah!"
"What is your major malfunction numnuts?"
"This is my rifle, this is my gun!"

And other movie/game quotes... Nothing original really
Alkiller
I use a program that'll play sounds in HL (don't ask me what it is.)

It's always fun to march to a hive and play "CMON YOU MAGGOTS DO YOU WANNA LIVE FOREVER?" from starship troopers.
Thardin
I envy the pubbies you play with, I've had no real chance to do this without the usual cat calls of nerd and ect.

Role Playing adds a lot to a game, even a FPS can be role played. . . specially NS.

CORBA!!!

or DAIKATANA!!!!!

Running in screaming AHHHH MOTHERLAND is fun

Or I EAT FOR CHIRST XD
X_Stickman
If i'm in a particularly stupid mood, i run in while shouting "Kamikaze!" in a Worm's style voice down the mic... But that's not often any more since people shout.

On Planetside, my outfit's teamspeak channel, there was one night where everyone was playing songs because it was a relatively quiet night, fighting wise. One guy (rob) played Aqua - Barbie Girl and i said "That has so gotta be our battle theme"... and it stuck. Next day, we were galaxy dropping all over the place to the tune of "Barbie Girl". Which was quite funny since there was a new recruit, and this guy called Redemption said "Rob.... play the battle theme" in this really deep and serious voice, and then barbie girl starts playing.... it was great.

I didn't have a battlecry.

It's dem Orks I tellz ya!

And the strange thing is I don't even bother pressing my voicecomm key wink-fix.gif

That's actually a rip-off quote of a famous US Marine

QUOTE (Gunnery Sergeant Dan Daly @ 4 june 1918.

Come on you sons of ****! Do you want to live forever?

And I do love this quote but I prefer the original. wink-fix.gif
(and actually that quote is inspired by the Spartans, those famous Greek warrior dudes)

While the talk about acting like pirates is amusing, I am going to assume that none of you have ever tried playing in character. sad-fix.gif 'Tis a shame. It's really fun when you get a whole server really into it.

its always fun to becon, drop everyone jps and gls. with over voice comm. "HO HO HO. MERRY X-Mas!"

I would, but I don't have a door and my walls are so thin you could stab a tack 1/2 an inch through the wall and see it on the other side.

Don't ask how/where I live. -_-

If I started acting in character, what would my parents think? O_o

I'll try the X-Mas thing. Sounds funny.

The X-Mas thing Roxx!

Whenever I play in character as marine, all I can do is a really bad Arnold Schwarznegger impersonation a la MadTV/SNL style.
Jitokiri
I used to always watch some scenes from Aliens 2 to hype myself up before playing NS (for example the scene where the marines are suiting up to fight). Hahaha its so fun! I also used to get pretty into the game with my mic too. Like I'd talk to the comm a lot and ask for orders and direct other marines. It was pretty cool biggrin-fix.gif made me feel like a squad commander. Also the fact that I was pretty experienced in combat made me feel uber. Hhehe the only problem was that I got into NS during my freshman year in college, so my room mate who didn't play NS had to be in the same room where I would play so it made me feel somewhat self concious. HAHAH i bet he got super annoyed and thought I was an uber nerd biggrin-fix.gif.

But yeah at first I was pretty shy with the mic, then i gradually loosened up and used it a lot. But now after not playing NS much I'm back to being pretty shy with it and only using it in emergencies tounge.gif
the_x5
Finally some one who has actually played in character. So Jitokiri, did you find that the morale and determination of you team increased when you were playing in character? Granted it's more fun, but did the more fun also mean more wins? I am of the opinion that if used correctly, playing in character is in someways a strategy to get the job done better.
Jitokiri
yap I think playing in character helped my team. If you get into character that encourages others to as well. They will feel more drawn into the game which will make it more intense and fun biggrin-fix.gif. Also getting into character makes people want to do good and not goof off as much. It was great for me because I had some clan friends always play with me, so we were like a squad of elites and the randomers who joined our team would get into it with us and generally we'd all do better in the game because we'd try harder to win. I'd say the morale of your team would definently go up. Only downside to it is that ppl that arent playing may overhear u if u get loud lol and they might criticize you for being a nerd but mreh, they're the ones missing out on the fun tounge.gif

When NS just came out, noone really had a clue what was going on, but it looked like Aliens the film...so loads of guys were like 'they're coming out the freaking walls man' 'game over man game over' etc then just crazy shouting when firing the hmg....

The thing that makes me laugh now is the music that some people play...like Macguyver music when we are building stuff in base....or Mario music or whatever
