Is it possible to have the Mic sound as a soundfile in NS?
Then implement this into the rines like "In postion" or "Medpack!"?
And have in that way the players voice in game and only in the area around him not like a voicechatroom connected to all the others.
Then use an extrabutton to use a communication system to talk to the team and have the mic enabled all the time so that you hear the players breath.

I hope you understand what im thinking of but for me it would be interesting if you could use a mic input in a soundfile

So you're suggesting that only players near you can hear your voicechat? I assume that aliens will then be able to hear this as well (if close enough)?
Thaldarin
Good but not possible as far as I am aware.

That and surely with nanotechnology the mic would be a mic ingame and all marines would have an earpiece which they are all wirelessly connected to via the ship/station they are in.

If you're talking voicecomm, it wouldnt be fair since not all marines use it... I could see a constant "static" sound, however, since Marines shouldn't be able to sneak as well as they do (that's the aliens' job - marines need teamwork) And even if they use headsets, the Kharaa should have sensitive enough hearing to pick it up - at least when they get reasonably close.

I'm not 100% sure what this is talking about.. Are you referring to replacing the medpack/etc with your own voice? Or having the ability to add your own?

no, not realy. its already possible to transmit the audio through the skull from the speaker to the registering parts in your ear. GSG 9 is using it for example. its basicly a speaker mounted in the helm. don't know if you know how a gsg 9 looks like, but their ski masks are open up there where the speaker sits. you can't hear it, i swear. only when the exquiped human is saying something...

maybe something similar to my eve's drop idea back there.
on the other hand would it be nice if the voice comm triggers something visible on the +showmap / marines hud-map (to know where the player, who currently speaks, is).

Yes and yes

Im not talking about voice comm which is implemented already im talking about putting the mic sound directly into the game.

Like a train makes moving sounds the micinput should act like a taunt so that all the players around can hear what a rine says. Like ingame speech.
Not like the normal voicecomm that flyes somwhat outside the game itself.
Although it should not replace voicecomm

For aliens that would be a bit unrealistic, maybe with voice distortion.

For this you would need a soundfile that redirects to the micinput
then implement this as a taunt like "In position" or whatever

This would be more an advantage for rines if u have it switchable.
Without the option to switch on and off this would be fun as u hear scared screams coming out of a rine when biting his **** but that would be concerns afterwards.

For me It would be enough to know if u could have a file, maybe even a soundfile, redirecting to the micinput.

Zunni, he's asking about a falloff sound source. Like footsteps, gunfire, and (as he quoted) the taunts and whatnot. So only Marines near you would be able to hear what you're saying over your mic, if you use *one* voicecomm button.. but it'd also allow the Kharaa players to hear you, if they're in the area.

If you use the other voicecomm button, it's talking to the whole Marine team, regardless of their location, and is inaudible to Kharaa players... which is how it works right now.

Then who would use this alternate voicecomm? No one would want to only talk to people right next to them and have the aliens hear them as well.
Highno
Welll u could talk directly to people so why you would not use it? There are many reasons to use it.
U could make a HL chatroommod with such a technology.

In NS this would ease communication as u can tell where the i.e. "Weld me" comes from.
There is no strategic background, but on that hand it cant mix up the balance in the game.

It might increase marine teamwork because there will be less pressure to keep the commander's channel free so that he can be clearly heard. You might get more random banter and a more social atmosphere on the marine team.

Edit: The commander's channel might need to drown out this form of communication. This would also be useful from a chat room mod point of view to allow for moderator announcements.
