i used to play ns about a year or 2 ago and it was perhaps the greatest game ive ever played so first i take my hat off the the dev team for making the one of the greatest games ive played (which is right next to warcraft 3 that is to say at the top) but enough shallow flattery
anyway i have owned a half-life cd for a long time but the problem is that i lost the cd-key a long time ago but for some reason i could punch in numbers till it went played it so it worked right then updated it and then i could install a mod and play it just fine. my problem now is that with the whole goofy steam system i cant figure out how to run ns also i keep hearing something about the won servers but i just need to know what to do to get things working so i can play again and hopefully it wont cost me anything as i already gave valve its dues. i HATE it when my cds go bad. ive moved twice now and ive lost quite a few such as civilization 3 gold and as i mentioned my half-life cd key.
PLEASE HELP ME!
forgot to add something whenever i try to run it through half-life and go to go onto the won servers it pops up saying my executable is out dated and it goes to update and it searches well i had downloaded the 1.1.1.0 patch and goes to the auto update it searches and says that version 1.1.1.0 is outdated but there isnt a patch to the new version. just figured id edit this post to add this info hope somebody can help me

Lost CD key? Buy another one. No pity here I'm affraid. You can pick up a copy of HL for under €10 easily.

Steam install of ns... Posted everywhere round this forum. Typically by Thansal. <3
You don't need any HL updates. Download the 500k steam installer from steam-powered.com and go from there. It will convert an existing HL installation to cache files and update it as necessary. If you don't have an existing installation you must download a copy. Both of these tasks require a valid CD key.

This will install beta 5 no matter what you have done before, so start at the begining!
1) Install Steam (Get the one with the HL cash if you can), if you have already installed Steam you may skip this step
2) Play HL Via Steam (just load up the training mission and then quit)
3) Search Your Hard Drive for NS and NSP
4) Deleate ALL Folders with these names.
4a) If you have a previously working install of an earlier version that you wish to keep: You can rename all NS folders to NSBUP and leave the NSP Folders alone.
4b) If you have a previous install of NS, and wish to keep your configs, cimply copy your .cfg filles (normaly just config.cfg and userconfig.cfg, to your desktop)
5) Close Steam.
6) Run the Beta 5 installer (ns_install_v3_b5.exe)
6a) Point the installer at Steam\SteamApps\Your@email\Half-Life
6b) If you backedup your config files, now is the time to move them to your NS folder.
7) Launch Steam
8) Change your filters so that the point at Natural Selection(Beta 5) Instead of Natural Selection (Beta)
9) Connect and play.
10) If you get any errors (map.bsp, client.dll, or ANYTHING:
a) Search your HDD for NS, there should only be a dir called NS in your Steam\SteamApps\Your@email\Half-Life\NS, unless you backed up a previous install.
b) If it is ANYWHERE elese, try moving it to the correct place, or simply deleate it and start again.
If you still get map.bsp errors, or client.dllrors, start from step 3 again.
If you are POSITIVE that you hvae folowed the directions correctly, then redownload ns_install_v3_b5.exe from another location. |

Question: I run everything, played beta 3, 4, etc, tried to update to beta 5. Nuked my NS folders, blah blah, yadda yadda. Go into a server, and I don't get client.dll errors or map.bsp errors, I manage to get into the game, but am STEAMED. Not kicked, per se, but I get pwned by STEAM...
Various errors that I encounter:

1) try other servers
2) reinstall NS (from a new D/L from a new source)
3) reinstall steam and NS
4) next time don't just on threads have nothing to do with your problem

Please help me.... I have followed every manual I've seen so far.
I have:
Uninstalled steam completely along with NS and deleted all remnants.
Installed steam
Waited for icon to pop up, and I right click however I do not have any "Games"
all I have is the list
Play Games
Browse Games
Friends
Servers
Monitor
Settings
News
Exit
When I go to play games all it lists are (using steaminstaller_HL.exe)

Ok well all instructions say to go to "training room" I do that in Codename Gordon
Then I EXIT steam
Install NS in the directory where HL is
Steam\SteamApps\youremail@server.com\half-life
I run steam and have NS listed under
THIRD PARTY GAMES
----------------------
Natural Selection (Beta 5)
I click on it and it takes me to Browse Games
If I right click Natural Selection (Beta 5) It lists 2 options
-Purchase
-Update News
WHY CAN I NOT PLAY!!!!!! please help. I've redone this using the same process with steaminstaller_CS.exe, installed this on both of my hard drives(2 seperate attempts not at the same time) and it will not work.

I guess you bought bronze edition of HL2... or Key came with ATI card which is bronze... give 10 more dollars and upgrade your account to silver edition... Then you can play every single mod and game Valve released. including Half-Life 1 which is required to play NS mod...

grendell: unfortunately, u gotta buy another cd key mate. no other way around it. if u get a warezed key, ull never be able to play since someone else is most likely using it.

gazOzz, if he bought hl2 bronze, he would have cs source in my games, not just released.
Sephiroth226, you need to do this:
Go to play games, browse games, register a product I already own.
Now, just enter your half life cd key. If you don't have a copy of half life, then you'll need to buy one It costs less than $20 at a store, and you can get it for about $5+shipping online.
Now, just download the beta 5 install file, and install it. Make sure you install it to your SteamApps\email address\half-life\ folder.
