Full Version: Maybe The Most Beautiful Hive Ever

I tidied up my webspace and came over this picture.
its one of the firs pictures of my stopped project ns_60seconds, which was the first serious try in mapping for ns. the map was in beta stage after roughly 4 months but unfortunately I had to drop it because of not existing gameplay. the concept was and "beautiful" version of the funmaps that were around to this time, the first "co_map" wink-fix.gif . the center of the map was an arena featuring 3 restowers on each side. the marinestart on the left, the three hives on the right. the only problem were the hives: I created separated areas for each of them but it was too hard for marines to fight through. the map got pretty nice and we even had some betatest rounds. one of the most impressive features had been a staiway that disappeared by pressing a button... STEP BY STEP!

after reviewing the map I came to the conclusion, that further work would be a waste of time, so I decided to drop this one and started the work on ns_source. but... everytime I look at that picture I feel kinda... happy.its te feeling any mapper works for but this hive is very special to me. Im pretty shure that I will "recycle" the idea for another map, too much efforts went to it. when creating the hives for ns_source I used the ventilation hive as inspiration. but you barely can tell which parts are common. most people will like the 60seconds hive better. however it was close to unplayable with this kind of layout. but it PRESENTS the hive.

dont ask, the map never had been released official. but since this is part of my "ns mapping history" I decided to show it to you. enough of dry words.

EDITED SO I CAN NOW COMMENT WOOT!

You notice the similarites, but most noticably the differences smile-fix.gif Its always nice to look at old work, I'd have to dig through a load of CDs to find my old stuff. I'll do it tomorrow.
Lt_Gravity
embarassing... but this shows ME how old the picture is. it is still located on my old hp webspace tounge.gif
thursday please edit your post, now you should be able to see it.

Either make specific, constructive commentary (e.g. Suggest specific changes and how they would help) or keep your nose out of this forum. We have no need for pointless bashing here.
Lt_Gravity
Quaunaut, maybe you should have READ the text, at least.

Wow, Thursday-, that was actually pretty funny.

Enough. I don't want any flame wars here.

For old work, the map isn't bad. You guys wouldn't want to see some of my older maps, trust me. Your eyes would bleed.

And, just to make sure I wouldn't be tempted to show them around, I deleted them ages ago. tounge.gif

like I said its a pretty old picture, nearly 2 years old now.
and to calm anybody down: the hive had a ramp leading from the bottom to the catwalk on the right site. but you cant see it because of the angle wink-fix.gif
you see its pretty open so the gameplay value was not too good. however, the red light was rotating, the "shadow" of the fan also. it was a pretty nice but very simple effect.

I would like to see some more dropped-ideas pictures in this forum. we all spend days for creating areas that doesnt fit later so we either change it completely or delete it. like this:

and its very cruel if everybody tells you that they like it but you HAVE to delete it. I thought about moving the area but there was no place left so... RIP

That last picture of yours. I was thinking of adding some old, abandoned mineshaft in Adrianne somewhere, but wasn't quite sure what it would look like - and so far have been too lazy to make it. You've just inspired me to actually do it.

At first glance I would've never thought it was a funmap. Also..,

I think it's because your older work has more detailed textures (I've never really liked the new black wall textures because they look so "blurry").

Yeah I thought so, among other things I've become less critical and harsh lately (me thinks).

Although I prefer the newer hive because of its scale factor compared to the rest of the room, making it look more wholesome and complete. Compared to the more empty 60seconds one.
Lt_Gravity
and I prefer r_speeds up to 380 (ns_source, you will have to faint when you see it, like I did...) compared to over 700 (ns_60seconds).

I remeber the day wheh I had to delete the complete route from the marine player start to the marinebase just because my idea of having marines starting from the surface didnt worked. never mind, now the rr tells you HOW the marines get into the "battle zone".
there had been a lotof ideas that DIDNT WORKED:

Some of the textures are a bit out of place, but gawd damn I love the lighting and the sand texture. Actually that scaled up texture works really well on big walls...
