Full Version: Allow Spending Rp On Faster Respawn

This suggestion will most likely be enough of a balance alteration that it will be for a future version of NS.

Allow Kharaa in the respawn queue to spend resource points to respawn faster. Start playtesting a simple 1RP spent = 1 second less time to respawn, adjust up/down as necessary.

Just something to try to see whether people like it for pub and competitive play. Could allow for better chances to quickly save the hive at the cost of having fewer RP to spend on upgrades once the area's been made safe again. Discuss.

I like it - plus it will make xeno rushes much more practical. Usually by that time in the game I've got lots of res and we (the alien team) are simply in the process of grinding the marines into a metallic nanite dust. With this I wouldn't have to spend as much time in the queue and could spend more time blowing marines up!

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. How would this affect all the other players in the spawn que? Would their time be improved because 1 person spent 5 res to respawn in 3 seconds instead of 8? Or are you talking about implementing a personal spawn timer so regardless of how many people shoot out of the que early you still take your full amount of time.

I think its a brill idea, especially when u got one hive this could deffinatly help aliens get terretory (spelling lolz-_-) back if rinez are messing around at the hive.
Byuu
Wow, great idea!
It'd have to be a personal spawn timer though, otherwise the res wouldnt really effect anything that much, you'd just get your res back in 10 secs anyway...

Yeah, I think the latter. Spend 1 res and only you respawn faster. Could be coordinated for fast wave spawns too...

This sounds interesting.

There could also be a combat upgrade that you will spawn faster for 1 level every time you spawn.

Good idea, BTW.

As several members have already guessed, I was thinking of it being a personal timer. The personal timer's starting value would still be calculated for each player in the same way it is now. If under the current system a player would wait 8 seconds, then under this system they'd wait 8 seconds -- unless they spent 1 or more RP. If under the current system the player would wait 10 seconds, then under this system....you get the idea, also 10 seconds unless they spend RP.

Meanwhile, as you said, "regardless of how many people shoot out of the queue early you still take your full amount of time" if you don't spend as well. If I die and have to wait, and halfway through my waiting someone dies and wants to get right back in, they can spend RP and skip right past me. Any number of players can do this. My time would not be affected if I'm stingy with my RP.

Well, there is a problem though- it'd be a bit funny with the wait time for others to spawn. Would this still put people in a queue, or take them out of it and onto a seperate piece? If so, they'd only spend 1 res and suddenly get out quick.

This would need better explaining Marik tounge.gif

You're probably right, it does need better explaining.

Let me write what I know of the current respawn system; if any of it's wrong because I do more forum work than playing and I'm an uninformed nublet, let me know.
Right now if someone dies, they get put it the spawn queue. If it's empty, they wait for a certain number of seconds. If other players have died recently enough to still be waiting, the most recent player to die has to wait a little longer because they're at the end of the queue. The more people waiting, the longer the queue is (isn't this the definition of a queue?) and the longer a new person added to the queue has to wait to respawn. Am I correct about this?

Alrighty, if so, then on to explaining my suggestion:
Let's say a player -- I'll use my own nublet self as an example -- dies. I'm broke and stingy with my RP, so I decide to wait it out. Because I'm not spending any RP at all, my time to respawn under this system is the same as if I had died in the current system.

Now to illustrate a *slightly* more complicated situation. 2 players dying only a few seconds apart. Let's say a different stingy player, Bob, dies and gets put into the respawn queue. He's been waiting for a short amount of time, and has about 5 seconds left when all of a sudden I get put behind him in line because I got my nublet skulk self killed again. This time I'm an impatient little bugger, I see I have something like 10 seconds left, so in a caffiene-induced rage I slam the "spend RP" button a dozen times in rapid succession. The game spends the mere 7 RP I actually did have, flashes something onscreen to let me know it's futile to try to spend 12 RP's when I don't even have that much, and my respawn time is cut from 10 to 3 seconds (10secondsLeft-7RP'sSpent=3secondsLeft). 3 seconds later I'm ingame again, and Bob has 2 seconds left (remember he had 5 left to wait through, so 3 seconds later he'd have 2 seconds left.)

[edit]Note how a very well-coordinated team could "spend their way" to wavespawning. If I had 10 seconds left and Bob had 5 (like the above example), I could spend 5 RP to have the same amount of time left as Bob (10-5=5, and my 5 seconds = his 5 seconds left; we both have the same amount of time left.) When our time did come, we'd both spawn in simultaneously. I'd just be 5 RP poorer. If we both had RP flowing out our ears I could spend 10 and Bob could spend 5, and we'd both be in simultaneously right then.

Any more questions I can answer/clarifications I can try to make?

Sounds good.

But a way to do this that would help out, is putting in the top bar something saying everyone's spawn time(for when your being camped), so they can allot it to someone's timing.
Alkiller
afaik, the current spawn system works that, say your nublet self dies, you get put in the queue, but since no one else is dead, you begin to respawn (timer starts). Now, say bob died right after you, he would be put in the queue. Once you spawned, his timer would start.

That's how I think it works. But I like your way. Everyone has the tag "Respawning", and a little timer somewhere on the HUD. (As a sidenote, I've always wanted a timer to know when I was going to spawn).

So I guess the spawn system might need to be re written a little (for classic), if it indeed works the way I think it does. But I'm definately thumbs up for this idea.
Fieari
Wonderful idea, I love it.
DailyNodes
love it smile-fix.gif
My biggest annoyance is how long it takes for aliens to finish marines off when they KNOW they have it won. This would definetly quicken a win.
NolSinkler
Why isn't this in one of the subforums?
Marik_Steele
I didn't think it'd be very modest of me to move my own idea into one of the subforums, but now that 9 people (other than myself) seem to like it, with nobody expressing disagreements/criticisms, I think it's time I PMed Zunni to see whether he'd like it to go into Future or Upcoming NS ideas.
Zunni
Sorry real life calls for me on weekends so I have late evenings only to read the forums..

But I think this has some promise...

So moving it now smile-fix.gif
NolSinkler
You know, it's funny because everyone wanted it in this forum, then as soon as it was moved everyone stopped responding.

Or at least I wanted it here...

No, this would be the final straw that the dreaded "2-hives up, gg'" syndrome has. At one hive, fine and all, but after that it would make it /almost/ impossible to take anything down.
Faskalia
I can see a big problem, concerning this kind of system:

There is (regardless of the actual values) always a mathematical solution which leads to a faster spawn while using minimal res. Players who know the system like their own pockets are able to outspawn rines with only some res to spend.

It might be a good addition for co but i feel that we need some kind of "alien-bacon" first. (i know that there is an "e" missing)

Why not allow a single player to empty the queue for 15 res?
This might be more usefull in pubs though for clans and any other coordinated team you idea is a great win.
