GREAT WORK!!! I R IN LOVE WIT UR WORK!!!

Two Questions tho...
1.Is their any sound tut's? Could u make one if their wasnt...
2. How did u get SF to host your work???

Once again great work, i love and use all your sounds...
PromoCL
Marr, I noticed that the Gamestartup.mp3 was a little weak (in my opinion) and so I ripped the menu music off of the Special Edition of A|iens. I think it fits it very well, and was wondering if you would like to include it in your soundpack. My email is promo.cl AT gmail.com (no symbol because of paranoid email spiders).

sounds absolutely sextacular, how much will this affect fps?

please say it wont marine.gif
Marr
Keep the feedback coming.

It shouldn't affect your framerate too much. My .wavs tend to be a bit bigger but my mp3s are actually smaller. It really just depends on your machine. If it can barely run NS then you might have problems.

The readme has lots of mistakes, so I'll update that next release.

I agree about gamestartup.mp3. Thanks for the offer. I'll email when I get the chance. I'm away from home right now, so I'll post again later.

Awesome sounds.
Though after I begun to use these has ns twice suddenly freezed and crashed up my whole computer. I'm not sure if it's because of the soundpack, just thought I'd let you know just in case.
Lord_Maldazzar
<--- had same problem as JJava...
but the soundpack itself is really good... especially the bite sounds biggrin-fix.gif
Vash_Fourty_Five_Lc
*raises hand*

I too am getting comp crashes after installing this Marr. The server I was on was NSArmslabs, and someone mentioned Steam spitting out of alot of people after map ends, so I dunno if it was Steam, that particular server, or your sounds...

But besides that, it sounds really really good overall. I combed and picked out a majority of it, good stuff there.
JJava
Humm, i think I've solved the problem. I figured out there was welding going on near me whenever ns crashed, so i switched back to the default welderidle.wav and haven't been crashing since that.
Marr
Wow, gj at finding that out! Yeah, welderidle.wav was one of the last ones I changed, and so was the least tested. Apologies for the crashes!

I'll update my .zip after the weekend. In the meantime, everyone plz delete welderidle.wav in the \ns\sounds\weapons directory.
Lord_Maldazzar
yep, its the welderidle soundfile

n1 soundpack biggrin-fix.gif
Marr
Finally got back to my terminal after the weekend and started hacking right away.

Updated top post with changelog & new info.
Smiley_X
omg, marr this sound pack has single handedly restored NS to my HD. Simply amazing work.
l0tus
i loved the pack as well, though i went in and added a bit more "fade·out" to the end of some of the alien samples, as they seemed to end rather abruptly...in particular, the taunt.
Tykjen
wow. stunning soundpak
hmz
sadly i dont like it one bit, probably just not my style.

To weak alien noises.

The soundpack is very nice tho, I liked all them Alien movehs biggrin-fix.gif

But for this game i rather keep the default ones tounge.gif
BlackPlague
has this been updated? i want to keep playing, but i keep crashing because of the damn welder! >_<
Lord_Maldazzar
delete the welderidle.wav file and you'll be fine...
cortex
would it be possible to put the faded out sounds up for grabs? i havent heard them yet but id rather be safe then sorry...

dling now... nice hosting 500kb/s biggrin-fix.gif

edit: amazing work marr, added so much to the atmosphere of NS. now the aliens scare me :< adds a bit of colour to the game i guess. this stuff makes me want to use the A|IENS pack so bad... tounge.gif
Marr
First off, sorry for the crashes!

I've finally found the cause and fixed it. The default welderidle and welderhit sounds have 2 cue points, so I put in 2 for my own sounds as well. But for some reason, Half-Life only needs 1 cue point to make sounds loop. No idea why that caused a crash in my sound but not the defaults. Real funky stuff going on there.

I played around with the welder for a while yesterday in-game and could not get it to crash.

Also, the latest version has lots of noticeable improvements. I've updated the top post with the latest download link, so if you've got any version older than today (9/25), go grab it there, or if you're a lazy bastard, then just click here.

I went through and improved the fading-out for the aliens taunt sounds. They never bothered me in-game, but that might just be due to my sound card. If there's anything else that bugs you, let me know!
Smiley_X
omg marr > my face
Marr
Just uploaded 1.3 now (9/28). Check the top post for details. You can download from up there or HERE.

Recently I've been trying to get all the door and elevator sounds to loop properly and not cut out halfway during the ride up (or down). There's some trickiness with cue points in the Half-Life engine I'm trying to figure out. This'll require further study...

In other news, I'm now hosting Necrosis's premier pack of Aliens models. If you're an ALIENS fan, you need them! The link is HERE.

Fox_One
NS is once again marred. biggrin-fix.gif
Dark_Soul
Nice pack, but I didn't think it would change the menu music and titles.txt, damn, i didn't backup those
Metalcat
i use this and it rules !!!!

Marr
10/22 update. see top post.

getting close to final release version.

lemme know if there are any other features you want.
l0tus
easily one of my favorite WIPs. ill drop some feedback as soon as i can, but im sure it is exceptional, as usual.
PogoP
Hmm Necrosis' alien pack is locked in the .rar, what's the pass? :/
Necrosis
Heh, just in case anyone else comes to the thread with the same question, the pass should be in the Readme file within my RAR file.

Anyone SHOULD be able to access that without needing a password (otherwise it makes the RAR pretty pointless, hehe). Please note the important text near the password.
l0tus
try reading the "readme" file. posting your question in the right thread might help, too...

on·topic: the only thing i might like to see implemented would be a static break added on to the beginning and end of the voice samples that don't have them, just for the sake of consistency. however, i know how tedious doing that would be, and i definitely consider it a minor detail.
Marr
Good point, l0tus.

Actually, that difference reflects my inner conflict over what to do with the voices. But I'll probably make the natural-sounding line more radio-like by mixing in ALIENS radio static and adding clicks to the beginning and end of the clips.

I've been playtesting my new swipe and gore sounds just now and I don't like 'em one bit. For now, I recommend using the alts.
Sykotic
Yeah i'm using this now, and it's all frieking awesome Marr smile-fix.gif
My only crits would be similar to what l0tus mentioned, a bit of consistency in the rine voices. Also i think some of the rine voices come out really fast (and as such are barely audible in terms of understanding what they were saying). I'm not really sure what can be done about it. The other thing that bothers me just a little is the mg sound, it sounds a little...what's the word...shallow. It needs a bit more grunt behind it (same with the hmg sound i think - i haven't had a chance to use it yet though). I'll try the alts out see if i like them any better (may just be a personal thing).

Oh btw this is one of the few threads i get butterflies when i see a new post by marr tounge.gif
Tykjen
this pack is the ultimate badass, state of the badass art

Yeah, finding lines from the movie that meant the same things as NS's radio was a huuuge challenge. I scoured the DVD for good ones, but so many are obscured by music or other actors' lines. For example, in the APC after the first confrontation, Hicks clearly says "Can someone get me a first aid kit?" but Vasquez exclaims the f-word right in the middle too loudly for me to edit out sad-fix.gif. So I had to skip lots of good ones.

In my next update, I'll re-equalize & add radio static and opening/closing clicks to all the voices for consistency. Maybe some amplification, too.

By the way, does anyone know of a version of ALIENS without the soundtrack? I could do SO much more without a full symphony playing in the background.

Thanks for the feedback. smile-fix.gif I tried to make the LMG sound light and the HMG sound heavy, but I guess I went a bit too far. When listening to the ALIENS DVD, I personally can't tell the difference between the smartgun and the pulse rifle sounds (like the burst Vasquez fires after screaming "Let's rock!"). But when you're an onos it sucks to to get blown away by a squad of HMGs you thought were LMGs. So some difference is necessary.

At any rate, I've already enhanced the low-range bass frequency (40-300 Hz) of my LMG sound locally and will include it in my next update. For now, try using the ALTs and let me know if they're any better.

No chance of using cooledit to remove the various channels?
Marr
QUOTE

I typically remove the spectrum above 5000Hz and below 1000Hz to make a normal sound into a typical "radio" sound. Most orchestral instruments are within that range, so removing them is tricky. It's possible to remove music if it's a single tone, but soundtracks often feature lots of chords. I can't remove them unless I isolate the notes individually. I'm no musician and such feats are beyond my skill.

In a nutshell, I've been removing music as best I can but there are some lines which are obscured by music of so many tones that I can't possibly isolate and suppress them all. I'd love to use cool lines like Hicks' "Let's go, marines!" and Hudson's "We're on an express elevator to hell!" but for the music. sad-fix.gif

Marr, you rock my world.

you owned me with this sound pack.
Necrosis
Its just that CoolEdit has an option for isolating that type of noise, I used it to clean up some Megatron quotes from Transformers (for a long abandoned UT Megatron soundpack).
blackpiranha
Damn good soundpack, good work!

Too bad consistency blocks sounds sad-fix.gif
Crowe
Hey Marr, excellant soundpack. I'm a DoD sound guy, and the only thing that seems really hard to get sounding right are the pulse rifle and smartgun sounds. I think its because the half life engine does'nt have a loop fire and only has single shots wavs. I think maybe the fire sounds need to be replaced by shorter wavs. If your taking stuff from the movies, theres a part where hicks looks in the ceiling to find many aliens, and as he falls from the ceiling, he fires a few bursts. His very first burst is really short. Sounds like 1-2 bullets. I think that one might work perfectly. Just a small suggestion. If i had a program to rip from DvDs, i'd give it a go.....but excellant pack, nonetheless.
AngelSaphire
Nice very nice! but some questions...why is "Thats it man Game over man" a taunt??? Some of the sounds should be replaced, but other then that GREAT WORK!!
Marr
Thanks for the feedback, everyone. This sound pack has gotten so big that I can't keep track of everything by myself anymore...

I've used CoolEdit a long time ago, but I can't find it anymore. It looks like they got bought out by Adobe?

Thanks for the tip. It's good to hear from a fellow sound artist. I wish that the NS weapons sounds worked more like the welder, with a 'start' sound, a looping sound that's played as long as you hold the button down, and an 'end' sound that's played right when you let go. That's how it works in AvP2, and it does a pretty good job mimicing the pulse rifles.

I found and extracted the 1-2 shot burst that Hicks fires in that scene, and will do some internal testing with it. I'll let you know how it works out. The music is pretty loud then, but the clip is so short (0.2 seconds) that it might not be noticeable after I tinker with the equalization.

QUOTE

Thanks for the feedback, but that's not a taunt. And if you could give me specific instances, it would really help me out. Here's my radio script right now:

Acknowledged:
Hicks: Roger.
Hudson: Affirmative.
Hudson: Okay, I'm on it.
Apone: Uh, Roger!

Need orders:

Hicks: You seein' this alright?
Hicks: Ready to rock 'n roll.
Apone: You readin' this?
Apone: Sir, you copyin' this?

Cover me:

Hicks: Stay frosty and alert.
Apone: Look sharp!

Covering:

Hicks: Can't afford to let one of those bastards in here.
Hudson: Don't worry, we'll protect you.
Apone: Alright, don't bunch up. Stay loose.

Taunt:

Hudson: How do I get out of this chicken-*#@^ outfit?
Hicks: I like to keep this handy...for close encounters.
Apone: There's some juicy colonist daughters we have to resuce from their virginity.
Hudson: Let's just bug out and call it even, okay? What are talking about this for?

Need Medpack:

Hudson: That's it, man. Game over, man! It's game over!
Hudson: This can't be happening, man. This isn't happening!

Need Ammo:

Hudson: Those ammo counters go...
Hicks: Gun's down 50%
Frost: Hey, what the hell are we supposed to use, man, harsh language?

In Position:

Apone: Check those corners!
Apone: Nobody touch nothin'!

Enemy Sighted:

Hudson: There's movement all over the place!
Hudson: Movement!
Hudson: Movement, signal's clean.

Let's Go:

Hicks: Alright, people. Let's move like we got a purpose.
Hudson: Come on, come on. Let's get the hell outta here.
Apone: Let's go people, they ain't payin' us by the hour. Let's go, head 'em out!

All Clear:

Hicks: Nobody's home.
Hudson: Sir, uh, we have a negative situation here.

As you can see, I'm really hurting for "In position" "Cover me" and "Covering". (For ammo and health requests, the comm will hear the "Soldier needs something" messages anyway.)

What do you think? Let m know which ones need fixing pr are too incomprehensible.
AngelSaphire

The rest is good, but this sound more like he;s afraid and wants to leave, and less like a taunt
Marr
Ahh, now I see what you mean. Any suggestions?
l0tus
maybe when hicks echoes ripley's "i say we take off, and nuke the entire site from orbit..." in the apc?
