Whenever I go commander, the biggest issue I have is selecting my marines. So, I think, that if the commander could have a list of the players on one side of the screen that he could select (and ctrl+select!) from, it'd be a handy and convienient luxury.
Uzguz
Add a toggle command (that would come nicely packaged with a default hotkey for the mentally deficient) so that it wouldn't get in the way when you didn't need it, and it'd be good.
The_Dot_of_Death
The few times I command, this would be most useful, you could even add what location they are at after their name on the selection toolbar.
Alkiller
Good idea. Since good ideas go to the bottom of the list I thought I would bump this one. And yeah, toggle switch would be nice as well, and their location.
Crono5
Yeah, I was going to say have it like the windows taskbar or something, but I was tired and forgot what I was thinking about halfway through =\

You mean like the list when your spectating.
Crono5
Actually, I meant like a rectangle on the center of the left edge of the screen that looked like the rest of the commander hud.

sometimes you see really good ideas in here that actually would improve gameplay... this is one of them. however, in 3 days, this topic is on page 2, no-one will ever notice it again, and certainly not the devs. mad-fix.gif

Here's the best comm hud suggestion afaik , the info boxes could be small enough to fit the comm's screen even with 8 marines.

Mouse over the info box to highlight the marine's minimap dot. You could better oversee the activity of your marines and check if they do the right thing , and quickly reassign surviving marines to a new squad when meet each other.

Sounds Great.

Good, simple, plausable idea which should have been done by now.

For switching through players what about using the Next Weapon/Previous Weapon to run through marines? And possibly a link in with hud_fastswitch 1 so you don't have cycle through then select marines, for much quicker access.

Also leads me on to the idea of a right click on marines or in the marine list to give them a simpler direct command to a location, will speed the game up alot.

- BUMP - , an idea which should be implemented!!

Mayby it could be improved by letting the comm deal out medpacks/ammo by this list. Either by icon in list or mark/shortcut stroke.

Alos maybe what equipment the rine is carrying, health and so on. Something like the Close Combat series hud display.

Wouldn't this cramp the screen up alot more? It would do with just the marine list, and would be almost impossible to implement for lower resolution (640*480) users. Maybe making this optional? smile-fix.gif

We need this or something like it, very badly, and it is a great relatively simple thing.

The idea was to select Marines, and that's the idea I'm suggesting. I think medpacks/ammo via that would be a bit much, it would make it to easy to distribute medpacks to everybody.

As for equipment, it would be useful to have a small icon next to the people carrying welders... But not really nessecary, the point here is to just be able to select them.

Here's an extremely low-quality gif image showing my idea (with welder icons!)

That's what the toggle key would do.

Great idea, i dont know why this isnt already implemented
Possible things to show/group by
Group by squad
Dead Players go to bottom
Order by kills?
Show kills?
Show location (already mentioned)
Show requests (Med, ammo, welding -should be added biggrin-fix.gif)
Under attack
people carrying welders (already mentioned)
player under attack?

I agree that selecting marines should be made easier. Your idea is a great one.

Two more quick thoughts on the same idea (and no, i haven't searched the forum to make sure noone ever mentioned this before. If they have I apologize to you, to them your families, their families and the Gods of worldwide fora)

- Make it possible to select marines on the minimap. Pull up a square around dots on the minimap and issue orders as usual on the main screen.
- Basically same as above. Just like individual marines and aliens can pull up the large overview map (+showmap), so should the comm be able to. And while having the map up, he should be able to select units directly from it.

This is one issue, my other is it takes the cursor away from the game play area...

However, I'm adding it to the list because there maybe a way to implement it and I do think it's a potentially nice change.

Certainly not for B5, probably not for 3.0 Final. But perhaps after that.

Locking.
