Full Version: My Old Mapconcept For An Ns Map

hi there!
Maybe some of you remember my old concept for an NS map. (old thread - plz don't bump it) Well I just found it again on my hdd... and now after 1 and a half year I'll post it again. Maybe this time someone will at least try to finish it...

I still don't map so some things may be not that good in the final map. But I'd be honoured to see, that someone at least took this layout as a base for his new map.

Concept notes:
- Mapsetting should be an research facility and/or mining complex... something like that...
- Yes, I know that there are 11 res-nozzles. But for a huge map like this, it's okay. (also ns_nancy got 11...)
- Yes, I also know about the railway problem (long corridor and stuff). Maybe you'll find a solution for that... (adding crates or other broken stuff on the railway, maybe parts of the broken wagon.)
- The 1st railway wagon is broken and shouldn't be accessable.
- Hive on the left has a hole in the wall that leads to the railway. This hole should look like as it was blown throught the wall by the wagon as it crashed. (omg... sorry bad english D: )
- The energy colums are like the ones you already know from ns_eclipse
- Security doors are like the doors you often see in half-life (also the doors that are used in siege maps tounge.gif )
- I still don't know how to replace the airlock... (if so). Be creative nerd.gif
- So the U-turn on the right hive...
- The two big vents should be accessable (through "service vents")
- The room in the lower left area is some kind of cafeteria
- Maybe adding another way in to the right cave is a good idea...? (not just the one and a vent)
- What about moving double res to the top of the railroad track?
- One access to the right hive must be welded from insided the hive...

Sidenote:
- I did this concept in M$ paint (later used PSP to finish it - mainly for adding the text of the legend)
- Doing this concept, I got inspired by ns_bast (still one of my fav maps), ns_eclipse (energy column thingy ^^) as well as ns_nothing and... good old half-life's black mesa research facility smile.gif

Well I'll go out on a limb and agree with the need for the rotating door to be killed (/me puts on flamesuit after bast thread). I'm not sure if this would have the same gibbing problems, and require all those trigger_push's around the edges, but you could have a cylinder with a single opening, and have the cylinder rotate around a stationary floor. If you're dumb enough to stand in the doorway, you deserve to die tounge.gif. The player wouldn't be moving, so that could reduce some of the gibbing/entities I guess.

As for doing the map, I SO want to do this one. I was working on a layout for another map, but this one is much better IMHO. I'm working on a map already for Doom's mod, but I'll work on this one when I get sick of mapping Hickville, then work on Hickville when I get sick on this one, and repeat the cycle until something resembling a map comes out tounge.gif

the airlock in bast was bugged, i made a duplicate airlock with new brushes and it worked fine, no killing when touched by another player and no gibbing.

id quite happily give it a go, as soon as ive finished my current map, which shud be the end of the week

have u got a bigger layout so i can see it better? =]

Oh, now I know why you like co_overmind :o)))) . The layout is very cool, I like the style how it's sketched :-). If the project be free, after I done ns_Hulk, I will make this map.

Well I got the concept laying around on my hdd for a long time now (January 2003)... And... I really hope some uses this concept. Use it as a base for your new map or map it strict after the concept... I also don't mind more than 1 giving it at try... wink.gif Just wonder how the different results will look like. ^^

oh btw.... I don't have the source file any more sad.gif - just that gif so... confused.gif
But I'm still open for suggestions (mostly for the things I mentioned above)

Well I was working on the tram tunnel, and had a general question for people. I was wondering whether people would prefer gravel/rocky ground, with the wooden railroad ties, or a more modern ground, perhaps with a single rail for the train, ala bast. I'm searching for a gravely texture so I can see which looks better, since I'm not sure if the wooden ties would really fit into an NS map...

Wow. Today is not my day with hammer. First, it wont make brush entities. Then, it wont create any kind of brush. And now...

If you can see past whatever hammer is spewing, you can almost make out part of a rail car. And don't might the lightspam in the background, it was just deleted due to the fact that hammer now decided that it would be better if said brush was textured in null, and un-changable.

Nope it only does it when I look at stuff at a specific angle. Rebooting seems to have fixed it at least...

You must have hit that "3D" button at the topleft. Don't understand what it's good for, but I had some fun messing about with it in my n00b days smile.gif

just press p tounge.gif it creates a grid like in hammer perspective view

ok panaka, you showed this layout to me earlier but unfortunately I have no time. you WANT this map, dont you? if I will run out of work, I will make some nice single areas... but I wont run out of work atm wink.gif

erm, thats the worst idea. if you havent noticed fenris still isnt done, mostly because it seems everyone is keeping the parts they done from everyone else.

i rekon it wud be kewl if a few people made the entire map, then we just had a look at them to see what they were like, and how different they would be even tho the original concept was the same

Hm... the main problem with assigning areas is (like already said) that you need to wait till the other guys finished their stuff. wink.gif

Oh... and I need help on the location names :-/

Because the way into the facility should be the railway (that is broken now) the background story should be something like "research/mining team got trapped inside the facility while alien forces overtook parts of the complex".

Any other ideas so far...? smile.gif

No, but seriously, you can't ask someone to change their story or their map just because someone has made something similar.

ME is still working at a mining site (ns_source) so I will tell you something:

NOTHING IN THIS WORLD WOULD EVER MAKE ME MAP WITH COMPLEX VERTEX MANIPULATION AGAIN!!!
