1. I hope obst can finish the mesh soon. it seems kinda hard to skinmesh it because of some complex geometry.

2. some people dont seem to visit forums regularly, therefore not ready their PMs:
- no reply from mirrodin regarding the box
- no reply from enforcer regarding the mining vehicle

3. I wanted to feature some finished models within the beta of ns_source but all I have is the pipe and the clamp. better than nothing but... dont know. I was shure people would help me when they saw the goal, dont make me think I was wrong!

4. I want to thank the people taking part in this project anyways.

I got exams/PE/driving lessons + stuff the whole week, but I think I will finish the mesh for the Mining Vehicle soon...

So, like...if I try to skin this, or if I get someone else to skin this, when can I expect my stardestroyer by?

Also, I need to know what kind of material it should be. Plastic, metal, any little details you want, etc.

btw: what I dont like are people that tell you things like "will be done tomorrow maybe I will work on another model, too." and then seem to disapear. you should, at least, tell me if you dont have time/dont want to do it. so I dont have to rely on you. Im not waiting 4 weeks for any models anymore.

I'll let you know now then, I'm not very good at skinning, and I need practice. I do plan on working on this today for sure, and I probably will finish it. But when It is complete, I don't want you to expect anything amazing.

What do you say to a rather beat up looking box? I think it'd look pretty neat, and ive got a new idea for a pretty nice rust texture i'd like to try.

Well, here is the start of it. I know it sucks, really hard. But it's a start, I guess.

Anyway, I am by no means finished with the main body. I have to add the outline for the spot where it opens (as drawn in that wonderfal paint picktar) and add a few scratches here and there. I also need to make the text blend a bit better with the box itself. Anyway, feedback?

*edit* Sorry if the rust is a bit much.

*edit3* I also need a lightsource for the skin, but i dont know what direction light will be hitting it in the map.

Here is the skin before I apply it to the model, I think it looks fine here, it just turns to poo as soon as I apply it...

*edit* A large portion of that rust is not seen on the model, so dont worry too much.

Yes. Aluminum does rust actually, but it's oxide (aluminum oxide) is almost as hard and durable as carbon tetrahedral crystal (diamond). Thus this rapidly forming layer of Aluminum oxide only a few microns thick is enough to stop further oxidization.

Aluminum is actually more reactive than iron. Mercury can be used to act as a catalyst which prevent the formation of aluminum oxide thus allowing the aluminum to rust. Infact it rusts much, much faster than iron does, thus why mercury is illegal on airplanes. (it would destroy them) I have heard a story how US Paratroopers had a plan to put mercury paste on Nazi planes to cause them to rust and fall apart in flight. Regardless of whether or not this rumor is true it would have worked. Also I suggest reading up on thermite for more examples of how reactive aluminum really is and also read how much energy is required in it's production. (has to be made via electrolysis near powerplants)

My stockclass paintball gun, the Phantom, is custom anodized. It has an artifically forced extra thick and colored layer of aluminum oxide on it which makes it remarkably more durable than any paint. (not to mention the deep red and black just looks totally awesome)

PS: In the future be careful talking about Chemistry in front of me unless you enjoy getting ripped. wink-fix.gif

Anyway, ignoring the chemistry talk about oxides and whatnot, i've decided to restart on this here skin. I think i've found an answer to my problem about texture resolution, and im not going to add (as much) damage to the box.

*edit* AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I'm a hair away from giving up. No matter what I try, the texture is lower than hell when it comes to quality. The texture reminds me of communism, looks great on paper but sucks when it's actually applied.

Um are we sure about the numbers? Better ask UZi but I think the HMG for instance has a 12mm diameter barrel bore size. confused-fix.gif

Do these boxes have to be grainy green. I mean aluminum oxide is shiny liek and can be oxidized with many pigments:

So remember many of these frontiersmen may have custom anodized stuff and also that and extra thick coat almunium oxide (via anodizing) mean you'll have a more durable surface. And also for you skinners that aluminum structures will have a glossiness to them.

I started over again, the botchy green wasnt liked. I can't do anything good, so im just doing brushed metal with the same stuff on top of it.

Okay, so I accidentally deleted what I was working on, i've decided not to continue work on this, I might try again once i've learned a few more tricks.

I removed the box from the map for the first version.
I will do the skin myself if everybody acts like its this hard to get a decent skin. I will learn it by myself. jesus, "if you want something done, do it yourself!" becomes true, AGAIN! thx anyway.

Yes, the most recent one is the dropship. Some pages before you might also find the mining vehicle.
tbh having the mining vehicle skinned would be MUCH better than the dropship, as the dropship is a *beep* and the mining vehicle is *beep* (Sorry, don't know if I can spill out Grav's "secrets" [No, not the underwear. Pervs.])
