Join the "we want to help Lt. Gravity!!!"-squad today and win a stardestroyer of your choice!

you dont know me.
because I am more like a "mapper" than a "modeller".
but if you want your mapping project to be something special, you have to do TONS of extra work to create a believeable world.
so take a look at this:
ns_source

edit:
so I need some people that are able to create kickass-skins and maybe one person who does an animation job (but last one isnt this important). these models bellow are FINISHED but maybe I will add some good ideas from people working on each model. write an email or PM and tell me WHICH model you want to work on. then you will get either filetype of your choice or the mdl-file.

Neat. Paint?
CaptainPanaka
I know you biggrin.gif

hum... I suck at skinning, so I can't help here... but this reminds me a lot of the mining vehicle from "Red Faction". So if the guy who will skin it needs some ideas for the skin, just take a look at that thingy. wink.gif
Lt_Gravity
I "know" you, too wink.gif

reminds you of red faction? this wasnt my intention but I think its a good thing.
1. because I love red faction
2. maybe the "feel" of the model will add atmosphere to the map

so custom models are worth the work. will update with more detailed model when its done. VOLUNTEERS mad.gif
Chrono
looks like 3dsmax to me or wings3d its a pretty nice model
what suprised me is that your a mapper and you can model wow.gif
frostymoose
looked like wings3d to me, too, but I checked and I couldn't find anything that looked like those lights(?). maybe it's a newer older build or else i'm completely stumped. I looked at blender, too and I don't think they have anything like that.
Chrono
nah blender isnt like that blender is greyish
CoolCookieCooks
ill skinmesh if you want...
Lt_Gravity
skinmesh: YES if you could be so kind smile.gif

its just that I am not this skilled in creating models, skinmesh and skin them but... lets say my job gives myself the opinion to work with one of the most expensive and complex 3D application on this planet. and its just a rough idea, I am only trying out some features.
but there is one big problem: this software is meant for building "real" stuff. so its very hard to work out the chamfers so they look like curves in the GAME. a curved corner created with this prog is 100% round. round in gameengine means 8-faced or 16faced. here its a curve. so its 8-16 the work tounge.gif

the programm calculates all modification as part of a "solid work model". its similar to mapping with valve hammer editor, with the slight difference that you even can manipulate the solids as the were real objects. 3dsmax is toys in my eyes ^^

so this model is crappy compared to what the programm is able to do. but the author isnt able to tounge.gif

enough of this. if you are interested which guy does this "crossover" justvisit the ns_source thread in the mapping forums. enjoy.

autocad?

autocad?

ROFL

omg... *tries to stop laughing*

you cant be serious. first of all autoCAD without extension is just a 2D drawing programm. second: its the cheapest CAD prog. third: most people dont even use it anymore.

and we are talking about complex 3D models here ^^

well... have you evertried autocad ? its not "just a 2D drawing program" it's used by many to draw precis drawings for buildings and machinery.... and yea, autocad can do some isometric view thingy and i must admit that this look like autocad... so yea...
Shinzon
might be solid edge... like autocad but used to work in 3d confused.gif
Lt_Gravity
close. but no. it isnt solid edge ^^

next one please tounge.gif

how would this actually mine anything? :S

nanites
Drake1
im guessing it either carries things or is used for equipment since it says

QUOTE

as in it assists in the mining prosess
Lt_Gravity
one version is used to carry personal and equipment.

the other version will be used for drilling, carrying the drillheads, stakes and the gear.

happy drilling ^^
Ratonetwothreetwoone
cinema 4d?
REDDmonkey
tounge.gif i dont think that's cinema 3d because i've tried modelling in that before, but i may be wrong. The model seems quite nice though smile.gif gj
TheUdderOne
Surely u've just stolen the model for the thundercats' vehicle?
enf0rcer
i'd like to skin it.. if I had a mesh tounge.gif
Lt_Gravity
like I said its a rough sketch of what it will look like.
does the sd-exporter for 3dsmax create hl-compatible polygons, does anybody know that?
and I would accept ANY help when the model is finished, thats for shure ^^
Lt_Gravity
now it looks like this.
dont have too much time when Im working but sometimes there are some few free minutes...
I reworked the body bt it still looks terrible undetailed. added a touch of the gear of the drill at the rear part. and look: it even has got wheels yet tounge.gif
first pic looks litle hummer-like. thats funny ^^

may take more time when the map is nearly finished...
ns_source "screenshots thread"
Realmer
Lets just say that I would buy it if it was sold biggrin.gif nice concept
Drake1
looks like a rocket turret on the back =D
Lt_Gravity
@ drake:
erm, yes -_-
no, its the base for the drill. the "rocketlauncher" is the housing of the drilling-gear, the left one is the engineblock, sure, slightly rough atm. I wonder if tanktracks would be more fitting than the tires.
and I made the screenshots little bit smaller.
however, work in progress. maybe some new screens next week, maybe I will even be able to finish it then.
Demiguise
looks nice
i would love to skinmesh it aswell just to see what it would come out like....
Lt_Gravity
any ideas for the skin? style, colors etc.?
Demiguise
nah
but if you added tracks then it would look more like the Thundercats vehicle :o
Lt_Gravity

what is he talking about? 0_o
Lt_Gravity
well, anyways, here we go again, this time with the (hopefully) final version of the vehicle. and no, THIS ISNT A GUN, its the base fr thedrilling gear...

and I have two further models, not this "popular" but stil some work to do ^^

user posted image

an alternate pipe, probably will be used on ns_source, depends on the entity-count.

user posted image

will DEFINETELY used on ns_source!
and the texture for the credits isnt finished yet wink.gif

BUT:
here comes the big "hm...".
these files can only be send as iges files (.igs ending). I dont own 3dsmax but I know that it will be able to read iges files, so you can export it wth the 3dsmax plugin to an smd file.

little "bonus" feature: all parts of the vehicle will be send in separated files, that means you dont have to separate it by yourself when skinmeshing and texturing. that also means a faster workflow.

if you feel like helping me, pm me or send a mail or visit #ngg channel on irc (quakenet) and as for me ^^
frostymoose
I was hoping I could help you out, but LW just doesn't have any turbocad importers.
Chrono
if you know max can read igs files send em to me ill send you .3ds of the files that way some one like frostymoose can help you smile.gif
Lt_Gravity
have send it to your email.
have fun with the worst interchange-format ever! tounge.gif
Chrono
good news gravity this latest version worked and i even got a render tounge.gif
now send me the rest of the files in this same format and ill zip up .3ds of everything and send em back
but there is 1 major problem with these models they are EXTREMELY high poly this tiny thing here is 3700 so if you want i can remodel them for you at lower polies

YOU DEFINENITELY ROCK!
but which of the two formats I send to you had been portable???
polycount: its because a moron created it with an kickass workstation that can easily handle millions of polies so it doesnt matter to me tounge.gif will be a 2 minutes work to reduce polycount to.... hm.... maybe 500. a picture showing the wireframe of the model would be EXTREMELY helpful!

ps:.... YOU ROCK!
Chrono
.wrl works dont worry about reducing the PC ill do it myself
Lt_Gravity
still waiting for chronos converted files.

next thing:
- coolcookiecooks > skinmesh?
- enforcer > skin???
just say "yes" biggrin.gif

another thing I realized when I thought about the pictures: this pictures from me look little plain, not like real, big machinery more like little toys.
thats because in the technical "department" we have to use the "parallel projection" so a line in the front is as long as the line in the rear area. thats why the shots look little odd.
I will try to make some more "real" shots tomorrow to get you in the right mood wink.gif

*waits for files*
CoolCookieCooks
"yes"
enf0rcer
yup smile.gif
Chrono
hey gravity the drill body is 2600 polies but i cant export it max keeps crashing i dont know whats wrong with it i think itll be best if i just remodeled it
and the entire vehical is 14000 i dont know what the hell happened but thats a insane polycount
enf0rcer
probably have duplicates of the model overlapping eachother. Or one small corner of it was mesh smoothed a billion times tounge.gif
Lt_Gravity
over 14000???

what the hell does the conversion tools do???
I could start counting.
- each surface with 4 corners > 2 polies
- each surface with 5 corners > 3 polies
...

chrono please send me a picture of the wireframe so I can tell what is wrong exactly.

coolcookiecooks: nice to hear that smile.gif
enforcer: you had to say "yes", not "jup" wink.gif
Chrono
i dont know whats wrong with it i looked at the wireframe myself it seemed normal its confusing the hell out of me
TheUdderOne
Just a question chrono...what format is it in (patch/poly/mesh)

Patches have some weird problems with cylinders where they make them 500+ polys so that could be one problem.
Chrono
its in mesh gravity i cant help you anymore till i get done with doom3 i just got it and i wont be on the boards/aim/msn for a while
Lt_Gravity
great attitude.
personally will work on a even more low-polied version to get this right before its gets terrible wrong.
Lt_Gravity
just send the new version of the vehicle. its a more simplified version so we can keep the polycount down. and now Im waiting for ANY reply.
great. and dont complain: mapping even takes much more time!

...

*waits*
Chrono
gravity i got the new version ill take a look at it when i can
