Because of the most stupid thing ever known to mapping... a leak
Basicly I'm calling out to any more experianced mappers to help me find it, i'm willing to send my RMF file to anyone that wishes to help (and i'm pretty confident not many people will want to nick my map anyway...).
Please don't just send me to the "Mapping FAQ" topic, i've tried it... not found anything that will help me
Also please don't just say learn on your own, its the only way to become a good mapper! Because I just want to for once, be able to release one of my maps without it having to be at full bright with terrible fps
Please look into your hearts and help a fellow mapper? (Even if compared to most of you is very "noobie"...)

I'm willing to give it a go - mailto: pr.searle@ntlworld.com - no guarantees, though.

When I look for a leak I usually turn the 3D view to flat shading b/c I find it easiest to see leaks against a solid color. I also hide all the entities. Then load up the pointfile and if you are using the newest hammer beta the pointfile will load up in the 3D view. I then look for where the pointfile is going through the wall and eventually find the leak.
And for future refrence there is a help and troubleshooting forum specificially for these kinds of ?s. We try to use this forum for pimping work and such.

you could just house the map into a huge box, covering the whole thing.

this is not the mapping FAQ, and most of it is how to find leaks
http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...showtopic=55406it shows you how to load pointfile, check for leaks, use box technique etc.
thanx to DarkATI for that

NEVER, NEVER DO THIS!

use the box method for FINDING leaks, but do NOT box your whole map, and distribute it that way. box method is on that list, you just take a box and cover the leak, then make the box smaller until you know about where the leak is.

Can i just ask one thing then?

Nope. Just make a huge box covering about half the map. Compile... if there is know leak you no the leak is somewhere inside the box so keep reducing the size of the box until you find the general area where the leak is and then look using the 3d view.

as were talkin about leaks, has anyone ever had a leak just in the middle of open space how i mean is i had a leak in the middle of one of my rooms, it was fixed by putting a null brush over it, but surely i shudnt just get a leak in the middle of my room like some sort of vortex or sumint

Okay, I found three leaks - once I fixed them, the map got past the CSG/BSP stage successfully. I'm afraid I didn't test out VIS/RAD, but they don't report leaks anyway. I've attached an image with the leaks highlighted, and the approximate x/y coordinates are:
1: -1154, 1272 to -1152, 1270
2: 568, 376 to 584, 240
3: 2448, 536 to 2472, 588

I find Pointfile to be the most useless option Hammer has to offer. you Turn it on and get 5 different coloured lines Going all over the place. I still havent worked out how its supposed to help you.

Get Hammer 3.5 beta, you can follow the lines in the 3D view.

he means:
if there is NO leak you KNOW the leak is somewhere in the box*
kinda confusing how he switch them around.

Well... I forget how Hammer loads pointfiles. It can't be too much different that Radiant tho. You just start at the entity it tells you the leak is at and follow the line untell you get to the leak... Works for me. I can find a leak in about 30 seconds usually unsing this method.

pointfile is THE easiest way to find a leak. just load the .lin file and follow the line. the more red it comes the closer you're to the leak

Lots of thanks dude!
Now i know why i could never pin point the leak within the box... because i had 3 lol
Very annoying how compile tools just say you have a leak... but not how many

THANKS AGAIN BTW!

They don't tell you how many leaks there are because it would be impossible to do so.
Also, the box method is a horrible, horrible way to find leaks. It also doesn't work if there's more than one leak. Do yourself a favor and get Hammer 3.5. It lets you load a pointfile and follow the bright red line straight to the leak. Once I started using it I could find most leaks in under a minute.
