Ummm, I guess I'm supposed to post here seeing that I'm the n00b that I am, (does that make sense?). So, uh, hi. biggrin.gif

And while I'm at it, I'll take claim to this thread's 500th reply. tounge.gif
Stuckie
Hey I'm -=STUCKIE=- smile.gif
I played a game last night and I'd like to thank those involved for putting up with me and showing me what the hell I was supposed to do wink.gif

I got roped in here by someone wink.gif they know who they are.. hehe

Anyway, it was a blast and I'll probably be showing up more often.. hehe

BTW, this is the first mod (other than CS) that seems to work properly in linux and doesn't take a fit when I press ESC biggrin.gif

Oh, and I'm a nutter from Scotland wink.gif
Dysfunctional
Hihi peoples.

Now.. where to begin..

I suck at NS. I've played it a few times at a friends house. He goes by the name of Rion if youre wondering. But I still suck. No biggie though.

I'll get this on my own comp soon. Right as soon as I get the cash to buy Half-Life. I hate being broke. confused.gif

But with that said.. I love this game.. See ya biggrin.gif

Oh yeah.. And I live in Wisconsin. Yadda yadda yadda.

There's a problem with the shortcut placed on your desktop. Will be dealt with in 1.1.
Run Half-Life (or CS/DoD-retail) and go custom game->ns->activate.

On a sidenote a hearty welcome to all the new players of NS, come in, have fun and don't yell at anybody if you get addicted to it and lose all your RL contacts. wink.gif
XenoBwtaliS
i'm XenoBwtalis, or Bwta. DoD lover and CS hater. smile.gif

i'm from Milan, Italy.

and, i first heard about NS on a PC magazine. It was a couple of months ago.

you know, i was very skeptical about this mod when i first read the review.

to add to this, later on, a friend of mine who's a pro-gamer defined the game as "silly".

a week ago i just got too curious, and downloaded it.

half an hour later i just couldn't stop playing.

man this game is SO good you even have fun losing!

one of the first things i realized was that all my discrete DoD skillz were nearly useless (having a good aim helps against a Kraut infantryman......because the guy can't climb on ceilings and hop ten meters long!)

i played both sides on nearly all maps, but mostly as alien since there seems to be a general preference for marines.

i still have to play as commander. i tried the gorge once or twice, but aside from building res towers i still simply can't realize what to do next.

this is a game i wanna get very good at!

Yo, i am a cs player and i have seen some gamesrs at my cafe playing ns. I have been looking around for some time now to find a deeper team play in cs and i saw the commander mode one day. I thought it looked pretty cool. What other reasons do you guys play ns over cs for? I am interested to hear, don't laugh at me, just tell me what did it for you.

I like CS because the kills feel REALLY SATISFYING (yes run away) but seriously,

-mp5 4 hits 120 damage- oh yeah
-deagle 1 hit 114 damage- oh yeah

I dream about that stuff.

why should i play NS???

i used to play DoD bcoz i don't like CS one bit (the reasons are many, and no, i'm not bad at playing it).

personally i tried NS the first time because i wanted something different, and i'm pretty damn glad i did.

what NS did for me? hours and hours of never-seen-before fusion of strategy and direct action fun! (well Sacrifice has it too of course, but you don't play it in 24 people)

soon there will be human vs human matches, also, so CS lovers will enjoy it more (and DoD ones of course).

and DoD and CS have no Siege Turrets! smile.gif

Hi! I'm Cam (cameron if u prefer) i've been playing NS for 9 months, and I recently found the NS webpage (foolish me thinking it would be linked form planet halflife) and I love the community so far, I think its evident I like this place from the fact I've made 50+ posts in 2 days.

WOOOT! asrifle.gif
Blu3beret
First things first, so I guess Ill post here tounge.gif
My name is Bill, but most people online will call me "Blu3".
Im from Collegeville, Pa (A suburb of Philadelphia).
Its actually ironic on how I came to like NS; I was in a discussion with 2 friends of mine from Canada during a game of Wolfenstein on what was the best mod for Half-life. We came to the conclusion that it was between:
Counter-Strike (My Favorite), Team Fortress Classic, and Natural Selection. I came off as "WTH is Natural Selection?" and my
friend replied in saying it was a sci-fi shooter. Now I just laughed and did what any friend would...I made fun of him for playing a silly game with fat aliens and dogs that climb walls. Out of curiosity I downloaded it to see how bad it was, and I actually began to like it smile.gif (I still like CS the most though tounge.gif )

I have one request of the Natural Selection Forums however...Dont let it turn into the CS forums or the RA2 forums (if you've been there you'll know", everyone flames, trolls, whines, and complains.

Spyder_Monkey
Welcome newcomers. Sorry about that link on the first post, haven't updated this in... years? smile.gif
Freyar_Hunter_MHX
Yo! I'm not new to NS.. but new to the board. Gimmi HA and a 'nade launcher and I'm set. I'm a good story writer too.. so expect some stories once I learn more about the aliens.
Green_Hydralisk
Hello. I shall Tell you my name and a few hobbies. My Name Is Matt Yost, the o in Yost is a long o... I was a huge sc/bw gamer but like so many others i found cs and have started to play it. Then after playing cs for a few months i also found NS and TFC??. Installing NS took long enough on Dial up (Which is not the NS Team's Fault i guess) but then after trial and error for about 30 minutes i finally got NS installed biggrin.gif It was worth it i guess... but to get the full exp of the game il have to play it more then 2 days. GL To you all on your next NS Mission asrifle.gif
Chronosv2
Hello. I'm Kevin (Chronos in HL) and I'd like to say I'm incredibly impressed with NS. Even on dial-up you have made the game run nearly flawlessly. Still gotta' read the newcomers thread (on how to get started in NS). I say this, trial and error didn't work very well. I stumbled into a game without a commander (or one that wasn't doing much if there was one), but I still managed to help out a bit on repairing structures. Anyway, it's good to be here. I've got an interresting idea that I'll post at a later time. (Could be within the next hour, could be a day) o_O

And I like the custom NS Emoticons. biggrin.gif

Hello. My name is Mikko, and I come from Finland, a town called Kuopio. This is my first post even though I'm not that new to NS, only the forums. Natural Selection is a great mod. Excellent work.
kissie
Hi, my name is Tobyn. I know the username might be a bit misleading but I'm a guy. I live in Atlanta, GA and play on most of the eastern/central north american servers. I've been playing NS for quite a while off and on when Real Life™ allows, but I work nights and usually play at really odd hours. Hope to see any other night owls on the servers from time to time.
Marik_Steele
/me waves hi to Kissie
Forgot which server I saw you on today, but it was a good game.
Everyone better watch out for this guy, half of us on the marine team were joking about how they'd constantly get the "kissie of DEWM™!" <insert cheesy 50's horror movie echo effect here>
Stewie
Heya, my name here is Stewie, my ingame name is [RA]Stewie and I'm Dutch ... I mostly play on Dutch servers. I'm not really new to the game, I've been playing it for a few months now and even with that amount of experience, I'm still one of the lousiest commanders out there tounge.gif

warder808
Hi,

Im warder808, from Brooklyn NY. I heard about NS from PCGamer months ago. I played for a little bit, but stopped for some reason. Hearing about the new version I tried it out. Seems much better, just graphics-wise, seems a bit smoother.

I like playing both sides so far. I'll definitely stick around for a while.

*Suggestion*

skulk.gif Make the Skulk wall climb like the Aliens in AvP2. skulk.gif

The crouch key(toggleable) activates wall crawling, and some icons to let u know if you're on a wall or ceiling. Then I'll be eating marines from the walls and ceilings for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
severijn
Hi warder and welcome on the fora.
I'm Severijn(daedalus in-game) and come from belgium. I played this game since 1.0. I just loved it from the first trailer.
About your suggestion...
This has already been suggested, but people agreed that it would make the kharaa life only more difficul and less fun because on crappy terrain, you would get disorientated.
DarkDude
Hey, I'm also new to the community. Been playing the game for a few days now and I think it's safe to say this is the best mod for HL yet, I'm addicted. biggrin.gif You might've seen me in the Yo clan server and some others for the past few days (under the name DarkDude of course) normally coming out of the back of an onos. tounge.gif I'm not sure where I first heard of this mod, a few months ago my friend told me about it I think, but I had great luck when I finally downloaded it, got it just after 2.0 was realeased and haven't stopped playing it since. nerd.gif Just wanted to say hi to all the members of the NS community. smile.gif
Mr_Shoe
Hi I'm new. I heard about NS from another forum that is related to Sven-Coop. I haven't played NS just yet, but I've read the manually atleast twice now and I pretty much got everything down. Hope to see you in the servers. smile.gif
Sarisel
I'm glad there are people that read the manual - although it is a bit outdated. Welcome.
Paper
Hey! I'm new to NS and my game name is Paper. I heard about NS from some buds and decided to take a look and i liked what i saw. See ya in-game.

Dunno about tourneys, but there are quite a few thriving NS clans around the place.
Enron
Hi, I play as Enron. I've been playing since 1.0 but my college has a tight firewall so I haven't been out on the servers till now. Plus I'm bored at work alot, so this gives me time to post on here.

I probably fall into a rare category in that I can quote on the spot every alien/ability/upgrade--tech/weapon/uses and even know the maps fairly well, but have very little pub server experience.

I'm really looking forward to playing with experienced people and perhaps in a clan setting. Serious CS games were so much more fun that pubs, I can imagine its the same with NS.
RSMemphis
I have dl'ed NS last week, and been playing a bit, and I like it a lot so far, especially when team play happens.
Krytos
Hi everyone! My name is Krytos, both in the forum and in game. I downloaded NS right after 2.0 was released, but have only now gotten to the forums. I found out about NS from another forum. It sounded really good so I downloaded it, and haven't stopped playing since. While I may be a "Newb" in the forum, I can hold my own as either a rine or an alien. I have a hard time believeing that this is a HL mod. Too bad you guys can't sell this, you would be millionaires!

Well, that's all from me for now. Cya around!

Hello peeps, where's the bar ? confused.gif biggrin.gif
Grand_Commander_D
::marine::Heard about NS from a few friends thought I could give it a try. I'm quite impressed-back to the glory of free for all deathmatch with teamwork that CS was not combined with a little RTS...and here I am.

As the name suggests I try and play as the marine commander and I enjoy it too. Strategems and micro management are my strengths, running around shooting isn't. (Some could say that's debatable-both parts) I don't have much experience in the net gaming-I'm more of a LAN person.

Thats it until I can sift through the list of rejected and accepted Ideas for NS (Flamethrowers and Alternative resource collection are obviously out)
Princess_of_Power
NS is fun, isn't it? Don't quit too soon, this is probably the most active mod in terms of updating and paying attention to the community and the like.

There was a maunal?confused.gif...........aww man i had to learn by myself mad.gif
Heavy_Duty
Hey everyone, I'm not quite so new to NS. I downloaded version 2.0, and since it was so big I went to sleep when it finished. The following day I wanted to check out the maps by starting a LAN game no one would join and running around by myself, but that didn't work. Disheartened, I stopped for the day and did other things. The day after that, the friend who had shown me NS invited me to a game on Gamespy Arcade and what little life I had left was lost in the hours of gaming that ensued. This included a four and a half hour match (one! ONE MATCH!) from two AM to six-thirty AM. I have never done that before.

The game is so new! The gameplay is like nothing I've ever seen! You never got to walk on walls or fly in CS, among many other exciting new things I picked up on fairly quickly. After two weeks I was already killing Onos with knives and welders, and chomping through four or more marines in a row.

After that first mad gaming rush I slowed down a bit and discovered the forums, and, well, here I am.

First open slideshow from:- start button, all programs, NS 2.0, then choose NS Slideshow Tutorial. A good way to learn about NS. Another method is to go to the section of this site that says Frontiersmen New Recruit Primer at this [WHATEVER YOU CALL IT] (http://www.natural-selection.org/manual/alien.html) which is part of this website. IF A MOD OR ADMIN can link this I would appreciate it, that is if you wish it to be used.

It is recommended that you read this to learn the basic structure of the Marines and the Kharaa (alien race).

These two methods will show you the Technical Tree, or the way to grow, from basic start up to the final upgrades. If you read either one you will have an understanding of both sides in the game. It's recommended you do this before playing because the game is full of action from the start and fellow players are usually under attack or scouting from the word go.

This makes it hard and annoying if someone joins the game and asks the most simple questions that are answered by the tutorials.

There are other topics and posts that will answer almost every question you have, from tactics to just running around shooting. Having read the tutorials and/or other posts (please go and read the tutorials for your own sake) either join a game and tell the team you joined you're new (they tend to be a little bit more helpful if they know you're new, usually) or start a Lan game on your computer and run a game by youself. A good way to start in my opinion as you can walk around and get a feel for the game, without worrying about being attacked or under pressure.

If you wish to start the building side of the game, so that you can see and learn what is involved, you will need to access the console. This is done by pressing the Tilde key ( next to the number one key [which looks like this ~] this simple instruction is not saying you're stupid just making it simple for all beginners, I wish someone had made it simple when I first started) you then type "sv_cheats 1" without the " marks, then press enter, to get rid of the console press the tilde key again.

This will let you build for the side you have chosen. If you chose marine, the game starts you with a commanders chair which you get in by walking up to it and you press the e or use key. You choose the item to build and place it where you are allowed. It does not automatically build the object, you have to get out of the chair and go build it, by standing near it and pressing the use key. You then go back to the comm chair and enter it and carry on until you've either learnt the way the marine building works or you're bored. The speed of the buildings in single player is a lot faster than in a real game so be warned.

If you choose the alien side you start as a skulk, this is the same as in the real game. I think you should spend some time running around as a skulk before you try other things, but it is your choice. All the aliens are different with different abilities so spend time with each of them.

When you wish to start building you must evolve into the gorge (dear old gorge). The advantage of playing on your own is you can build all three hives and all the structures so you can learn basically what is and can be done. After building all that you can, you can evolve into any of the species and learn what they do. You can also gain an idea about what some of the abilities are.

If you read some posts on the forums, you will see the advice don't go comm, this an accurate piece of advice until you are sure you can do the role, if you are a beginner comm and in a public server you will be abused for being bad at it. A good comm can win games, others lose games, get flamed and usually voted/kicked out of the comm if the game hasn't been lost.

When do you take on the role of comm? I don't know yet as I'm still new to the game and still learning the ins and outs. Although I do know that if you don't know the maps really really well, don't go comm. Please if you don't know the map don't go comm.

This is by no means a full guide just a quick, getting started guide that I think is reasonably accurate. If anyone sees any MISTAKES please let me know so I can make it accurate for anyone new reading this. I hope that everyone will like this, but warn everyone that this is only my way of seeing things.

Hey I'm the latest newbie. I hail from the frozen north that is Canada. 100% new to NS and I havent played HL online since over a year ago. Anyways I heard about this from Beast, who's been nagging at me in IRC for ages to try it out. He mentioned something about digesting marines and I was in. I'm a Tribes player at heart, but this looks like it could change my ways and I cant wait to get into it.
