you need to build an observatory, then you will be able to beacon (for a fee) from the observatory.
Feel free to drop buy #nsguides on GameSurge if you have anymore questions.

from the observatory, its the bottomleft-most button that looks like a cylinder with a bright light on top of it. Costs 15 res, and 3 seconds to activate.

note that the obs can be anywhere on the map (yet only beams back to base), so if you also have one in a remote location, you can use that one to beacon back to base. The advantages of that is that they don't hear it, plus if they are eating the base observatory, you are still teleported even if it is destroyed. The cons are that it's probably going to be an easy target in a remote location...

Ok guys, thanks a lot!!!
Hey cereal killr you tip was great, i placed an onbservatory in a dark corner where no one couold see it and when fades had already destroyed most of the base (including the base?s observatory) i activated the beacon and we kill both of them. Believe it or not we afterwards won the game, so GREAT SUGGESTION!!

Also, assigning Obs to a squad is a nice idea. You can then select obs with one button, and call distress with another... By that, You wont loose precious seconds for trying to find and select the Obs with your mouse...

i tend to have my observatory in the base.. the distress beacon activation normally scares most of those lil' critters away anyway

Not to any advanced alien worth it's salt.. They hear the beacon and they get ready to start killing the fresh meat that's materializing...
Another use of beacon is when you need to get your team back to base quickly and they are spread all over the map..
For example 2 guys have built a phase by the hive but your other 4 guys are wandering around.. Beacon and send every one throug the Phase gate... Plus you can equip them all at that time, so you can drop shotties and send them through the phase.

Yes, listen to gazOzz. The moment you place that @#$%ing Obs, hotkey it to a Squad IMMEDIATELY. I have waited, on some maps, upwards of four minutes to start a siege (sometimes shooting the structures just doesn't work, y'know?) because the Commander is STILL trying to click on the Obs.

Always remember, if your base is relocated, BEACON WON'T HELP! It will spawn the marines to the original location which is probably too far away for it to help. It's a bug that has been reported to the dev team wich will probably be fixed in B5, so just keep that in mind.

also if your marines are going into an ambush common room a quick use of scanner sweep, the free recharging feature availible with the obs is excellent for countering any ambush they could execute.
