Full Version: These Annoying Lag Spikes

ok. The problem came some weeks ago (about 1-2 months).
I played natural selection and suddenly my ping went from 10-40 to 800+.
I had no idea why till i saw that someone pinged me. So i finally bought a rooter and it works quite well (no more ping attacks). But the problem remains. So it has to be something different. The lags arenīt that bad any more...but they are still there.

Before these lags I ve never had lags. I always played with a Ping of 30.

As far as I know my computer is fast enough...75 fps.

i ve never had problems playing NS before.

Important Fact: other games donīt lag (others meaning-->No steam!)

i read in other threads about "rate 25000" I did that...i changed the other games to "not update automatically" i set the cl_updaterate (or something like that) to 100 and the cl_cmdrate (i hope these are the right commands...) to 100. So i did what the posts said I should do...but its still laggy.
I also shut down Norton Antivirus while playing (just to test it)...the lags went on...

Is there a problem with the new steam update? Is there a problem with my computer? or with my internet?

Plz people help me...I really need to fix this. At the moment I cant play Lerk/Fade because a lag gets me killed imediately.

edit: and yes I know that there are other threads about this topic...but they diodnt help me as i wrote before.

And by the way...Im running Windows Second Edition...so donīt write something about Windows XP because it wont help me. Thx

About 80% of ppl i know, including me are having this problem on the latest beta version. I guess its a bad update error.

EDIT: I think its do do with the servers and not the clients since everyone gets the lag spikes at the same time.

there is a thread taking a look at this issue from the server side here:
