Full Version: Strange Lag And Such

Recently, Steam released an update which included codename: gordon as a game to be released and was added onto everyone's game list. Soon after the update, I experienced extreme lag spikes in ns taking my ping from 20 to 2000.

I ruled out the ISP to be the problem since my roomate had no lag spikes at all when he played his games.

I've done everything to optimize my connection speed including removing spyware, doing virus scans, and trying out different rates with no improvement.

The spikes only happen when I'm an alien and I get close to a marine or vice versa.

Any suggestions?

System Specs:

512 DDR Ram
ATI Radeon 9000 AGP

T1 Connection

make sure all games are set to NOT update.

rclick on each game and look at properties.

yep.

if you look at the steam icon in your tray, it changes when it's updating a game - make sure it's not. it will only update official games (cs, dod, cz etc) make sure it's set to not autoupdate those

hmm i thought all was ok wow.gif but it seems like the spikes are recurring somehow!
Umm any other suggestions?

i get a cl_flushentity packet warning and then i freeze sometime for up to a minute. Sometimes the game crashes. #$@#$ing steam

And for some strange reason, half-life automatically sets itself to update mode after i start playing ns.....

let the half life cache finish updating before you start playing.. Let the cache status reach 100%

erm my hl is already 100% updated.

the default rate settings do not work well with NS at all...

i get timed out of servers some times with the default ones :X

what connection are you on?
oh. T1?

rate 25000 (since when has this been able to go above 9999?! i've seen many people say to put their rate at 25,000 ...)
cl_updaterate 101
cl_cmdrate 101

Hope this helps smile.gif

Also in another post someone fixed their problem by unplugging router and modem, wait, plug back in.

it could well be that these are server side issues in the current beta that have nothing to do with your client settings at all, see the thread here:

all right.....so i tried shanks suggestion and unplugged the ethernet cable from my comp (don't have a router b/c its a shared university connection) before i went to bed and turned it on the next morning and i think the lag stopped. biggrin.gif Strangely enough though, my connection speed is slower than before i had the lag (I would get like 20-30 ping on most high speed servers near my area).

I tried out the rates and it didnt' seem to change much...

oo and thanks for the info on the flush entity stuff i appreciate it.
