XM8 Pics, MS3d and Md3 downloadsmy first REAL gun made, other than crappy pistols
i am going to try and mesh and skin it later, i have no experience so dont expect much
if you like the model (

) then you can mesh and skin it yourself with the links on the page
i didnt just post the pictures here because they are fairly large and would have extended the page...
any comments on how to improve it would be great

Owen told me this morning that the latest XM-8 model has a smart scope like the OICW, maybe thats where he got it.

the milkshape smoothing is fubar like that because you havent done the smoothing groups on the model yet

yep... it's not really an OICW, more of an OICW scope system. you see recent advancements in things like PIC chips and other easily programmable IC's.
the new scope system is still in the old 10x casing of the original XM8 design, but has all of the following features;
Night Vision
Infra Red
10x scope with a 24x digital zoom
compass and bearing reader
ammo clocker (you have to punch in the round count in the clip before starting)

The xm29(OICW) has been divided into the xm8 and the xm25 "smart" GL. The xm25 is going to be the granade launcher part of the OICW project, and as all know the xm8 is the kinetic energy component part of the OICW, in other words the rifle part of the OICW.

nice model overall, it needs major thinning, and smoothing
the scope looks kinda off too, and you kinda wasted lotsa polies on it
but nice try overall
*off topic*
i think its pathetic they decided to make the xm8 with a 12in+ barrel to be standard....with that length, 5.56 rounds cant achieve 3000fps for hydrostatic shock to occur, thus, simply making it into a hi-velocity .22 rifle

the gl looks okay...
i wish there was a no scope one that i could model cause the scope takes up like 200 pollys
the scope is actually 12 sided i think, i forgot to switch it
i could care less about low poly models though because im not running on a 486

Its not the speed of ur computer...u can have too many polys for the hl engine to deal with.
chadypu
May 16 2004, 05:11 PM
how many can it handle then?
this xm8 is about 2000 i think

Dunno, but 2k is a lot of polys

Should be okay for the v_model. (because there's only one at the screen) But it's far too much for a p_ or w_model

I've had 169,000 onscreen once (the entire tanith hallway filled with electrified SpecOps TFs) and my framerate only dropped to 40 from 100

I had r_speeds displayed and epolies were over 169,000.
Edit: I think I have a screenie somewhere....

It was a helluva defense system for rines with too much res.

mhm I've seen that def system on various other maps with small corridors

but well.... 2000 is still WAY too much for a p_ or w_ model imo...

i know its too much for those, i will just get rid of all details and make those models flatish
how can you check how many polys are currently being shown?
Dorian_Gray
May 16 2004, 08:08 PM
IIRC,
| CODE |
r_speeds 1 devloper 1
|
in the console

as a modeller, you have to make into account the detail to poly ratio, sure the polies may be a lot, but the detail must be there too.

that reminds me of a game i played on viel, we made a train of turret factories (one right next to each other) all the way to subsector from overlook, we snaked it right around the ledge and down to underneith the hive... when we clued in the factories when electrified couldn't reach we built them on top of the hive with a jet packer and electrified every thingle tf.
this was the most hilarious order i ever gave
"MARINES DROP YOUR GUNS AND STAND ONTOP OF THE FACTORIES, THE ELECTRICITY WILL PROTECT YOU"
"umm... ok ...."
and it did the aliens just gave up on that hive
