Does a weldable entity need to be an aaatrigger brush above the object, or can it be any piece of brushwork.

Consider the func_weldable as a func_door in this case. If you put a AAATRIGGER texture into it without touching rendermode, you can see nice little pink lambdas ingame. So yes, it can, and should, be used as a piece of brushwork.
