this is my map.

Zipped BSP
*note* this link will only work if my friend has his file server on (so no guarentees it will work 24/7)

i have plans to eventually have 2 versions of this map (one MvA, one MvM)
no real story behind it (but i do have somewhat of a backstory for the MvM version)

it is VERY straightforward at this time (one path, one vent), but considering I went from not having hammer on my computer to this in 1 weekend, id say its pretty good (and very spooky-looking)

(its a work-in-progress, so any suggestions would be nice)

::edit:: just looked at the ns_mapping guidelines, and it turns out these parts arent bad on w_polys (but the hive/cc is iffy (looking at both at the same time)) ::/edit::

i will look into this post now and then, but i am mostly posting about it at the Chaos Legion Clan's forums

NS forums people are lazy. Most of us won't bother to download and run the map, because we're lazy, but if you post screenshots you'll get lots of commentary.

Disclaimer: I am lazy. However, I am also at work, where I can't run NS anyway. But mostly I'm just lazy.

<note> these pics are from b5 of my map (the only difference at this point is the lighting of 1 room) </note>

The spiral staircase doesn't seem to block VIS much anyway so try making it func_wall (null surfaces in contact with the wall as you won't be able to see them anyway, use the opaque light flag so that it blocks light) and see if that helps r_speeds, right now it is really cutting up the wall.

You have a lot of cylindrical things touching other brushes, this cuts the underlying brush in lots of pieces, to fix this you can try making a small brush with a different texture or a 1 unit missaligned texture and let the cylinder only touch that brush instead of the floor directly. You can also let the cylinder end one unit above the floor or make the cylinder a func_wall if it doesn't do any VIS blocking.

Use sv_cheats 1, developer 1, gl_wireframe 2 to see the w_polys in wireframe.

i'd look at my w_polys, but my steam is on the fritz
(0 network activity during an update, followed by "this game is unavailable at this time")

also, my next version is kinda ready, i just need to run it in steam to search for bugs to iron out in the next version
and get some new screenshots
