I left this game cuase of this in version 2 of ns and now hoped for it to work with steam. Sadly it didnt . Actually this isnt only ns related i have two other games that seem to have the same problems. though i can play booth of them by closing down ventrilo (wich i use alot) or mute the sound on ventrilo before starting the game.

Now in ns it doesnt work. i can start it with and without ventrilo on though the sound inside the game is very "extreme" i have this background sound wich more sounds like constantly crashing glass. now even though this i try play the game only to end up crashin on every reset of map.
Game crashes - Computer restarts - End of story.

most probebly know what ventrilo is but to those who dont its a regular voice comunication program.

some computer information:

Motherboard: MSI 845PE MAX2-FISR Motherboard S478/533 I845PE, ATA/S-ATA, ATX, GLAN, IEEE1394

Soundcard: Hercules Gamesurround Muse 5.1 DVD. Soundcard PCI, Retail

Doubt my graphical card has anything to do with it but her i go:
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Atlantis PRO 256MB AGP, ATI 9800PRO, DVI, TV-Out, Retail

i noticed on further back in the tech support got the same problem but no answers!
and yes i have the newest driver to my soundcard

Try reinstalling Steam with the new (600kb) installer. If you have done that already, well, I have no idea...

i installed it with the 600kb installer first time. and its not steam that is f:up it has to be somthing about my drivers or sound card not working properly.. so if anyone had simular experience with other soundcards then mine that would do very good aswell. all information is much wanted

i got a first hint it could be the sound scheme. well it wasnt because i changed it to none and windows standard still didnt work..

ok tried to clean up my computer parts and putted my computer opened right by the open window as i didnt have a fan. didnt work either =(

seems like quite a few have crashing/shutting down problems but only one so far have had it with the sound card problem =(.. might be two problems acting together and creating a hell for my computer?

yea i have the same problems 2 most of my half life games crash with a anoying repeated sound and every so often my pc will restart its self. ive tryed everywere and everything and no ones been able to solve it. i used to have the problem on battlefeild to but thats gone. so the only game i relly play online is battefeild =/ heh. strange it can run that and not half-life but i havent yet tryed running half-life with a big house fan facing in as i do to play battlefeild =/. it so anoying tho all i can hear is the fan

If it's restarting without you doing anything it is driver problems. Reinstall your graphics drivers for your card. Also try enabling the 'DirectSound for input device' for ventrilo if not already.

naaa ive tried all that it ive formated my whole pc and it still isnt fixed got the latest drivers and everything. i never used to have the problem so its something thats on my pc thats causing it...... i use a geforce 4 mx 64mb atm but debating wither to splash out on a 256 fx card or evan wait till they release 1gig. see if it fixes it... but for the moment just have to play with crashy games coz i relly dnt know wat to do anymore... so many things people have said but nothings helped. could it be xp home edition? coz i know that suxs with games..

yeah its starting to getting a little anoying as i have tried a lot of things with my computer nothing seems to work! i am speaking about this problem at 3 different forums and none of them have been able to help me so far =(. talked with the support for my computer they didnt know what to do either.. though they didnt seem all to serious. goes like this.

me: yes
they: do you have the latest driver for your soundcard/graphical card?
me: yes
they: then i cant help you sorry.

well atleast i found some servers having long time before map change but most often they are empty =(

I was having this happen and I did two things to help solve it. Not sure they will work for you but here they are. If they help any great.

1) Moved my mouse and my keyboard to different usb ports. The lockups seemed to occur when I had the voicekey pressed so I figured it was either the keyboard or the sound card. If you can't move the keyboard to another usb port, try going PS2 for a week on both the keyboard and mouse to see if that helps any. This is a possible solution if your USB controller is sharing interrupts with the NIC or sound card.

2) Shifted my NIC and sound card around in their PCI slots. Again to work around PCI int sharing. Once the NIC, sound card, keyboard and mouse had seperate interrups things got much more stable on my PC and I stopped crashing.

thanks for your input but i am fairly sure its not the mic or has to do with the voice key i am using. as nothing will change with ventrilo on/off, sending/not sending during map change, new voice speak button/ none at all. i am fairly sure its my soundcard, its setup or overheating that is the problem but i am unable to check wich one atm. though i will try change PCI slot on some things and see what it says...

Hmm is there any command to make my ns reconnect just before the server resarts?

maybe that would be a good temporary sulution?

i could write reconnect my self but its not always i will notice when a new map will start

hmm never mind the reconnct thingy as my computer is restarting even if i go out of game and join another one =( or just closing the game down manually =(
