Well, I've gone and recorded more lines in my new microphone for my Marine Vox pack, and this time I want some general feedback before I release Ver 3.0.
Here's what I got so far:
DOWNLOAD (1 mg zip file)
No readme yet. Unzip into your
\Steam\SteamApps\Your_Email_Address\half-life folder
Give it a listen and let me know how it sounds. Volume and equalization are preliminary at this point. As you can probably tell, I'm a big ALIENS fan and am trying to incorporate as many lines from the movie as possible. (This time I've extracted the radio static/clicks from the movie itself instead of generating my own).
I'll do another recording session later in the week, so if you've got some requests or favorite ALIENS lines (that fit into the context for each sound), I'd be interested to know.
BTW: I've got a huge backlog of taunt lines, but the following categories need more variety/inspiration:
"Covering"
"Need Ammo"
"Need Orders"
"Follow Me"
But of course, any and all feedback is welcome

Sounds alot better than my own attempts at voice-acting. Maybe I should try other things but eating on the microphone

.
Nice sounds, I'd really like to hear the complete pack.

after listeneng to them all over and over, ive decided that i really like how you did them, the *chhh!* and the mic-ness is excellent, but i find some of the speach lacking....
"WEB!!!" would be a prime example...

I like the jetpack one a lot.. makes me feel like the master of the skies, gonna fly around, ruin some tango's day

Everybody:
Wow, thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it. But I need more ideas!
Godhand:
I'm glad to have stuff pointed out, but I'm really hoping to hear some suggestions, like what you'd rather hear. For example, the "WEBS!" sound actually plays whether you're caught in webs or if you cut them with a welder. Yelling "WEBS!" is the only thing I could come up with that would fit in both situations. But if you can think of something else, let me know!
BTW: It's supposed to be "HA online". Anyone else have a problem picking that out?
Dillinja:
I'll see what I can do. I might mssg you about some of your structures once this vox pack is done.

for the web sound, personally i'd prefer it if the marine didn't say anything. just make a slightly more creative sound for the webs breaking.
i know you are going for the staticy radio-ish style here, but please try to keep the speech relatively clear and understandable. it gets really irritating when you just can't work out what he's saying (for instance the taunts in previous versions, i can't understand them for the life of me, so they are just really really annoying.)
i'll post some suggestions for the ones you are stuck on when i get home.

Kaine:
Thanks. Looking forward to some suggestions. Also, I'm trying to keep things understandable, but I admit sometimes I get carried away with editing audio. If you find any like that, let me know which ones they are!
Delarosa:
Yikes, what format are you converting from? The default Windows Sound Recorder works well enough...
In general, I follow these guidelines:
Weapon or Other Mission-Critical Sounds:
22 Hz 16 bit wav (Big file size/high quality sound. Keep 'em short!)
Short, Looping Ambient or Low-Quality Radio Sounds:
11 Hz 16 bit wav (Decent size/Quality ratio)
22 Hz, 8 bit wavs can also work when you need a small file size with lots of high treble, like the 5000k to 20000k range. This range gets cut from 11 Hz wavs. If you've got a long sound you absolutely don't want to trim, try reducing the quality (I think even 8 Hz 8 bit will play in HL)
And always, always match the extension of the original file! wav=wav, mp3=mp3.
If Windows Sound Recorder can't help you, google "Total Recorder", which'll grab just about anything.
Dragon_Mech and Daza400
Thanks, that's just what I'm looking for!

"Comon, if we stay here, we're toast!"
For "need ammo"
"Requesting ammo, ASAP!"
"Sir my ammo supply is depleted!"
"Sir, were seriously running low on ammo!"

I feel what your sayin, sorry i couldnt be a little more constructive hehe.... i dunno.. the only think that goes through my mind when i get stuck in webs, and i see that onos charging at me is " aww.. f**k. " So maybe that? hehe
those are all pretty good delarosa, my fav being "What am i supposed to do, swear at them?"
I dont really like the idea of comedic voices though, except for taunts. i'd like to keep my ns feeling nice and orderly, by the book, with everything short and sweet and to the point; keeping in mind the classic voices. "Medpack!" ok, its short, it conveys its meaning well, and it doesnt clutter your speakers for a long time (big issue for me), possibly masking that incoming skulk, whos just waaiiting to eat your face off, through your fancy helmet.

Awsome, keep up the good work. And the whole staticy radio really adds to the atmosphere me thinks....
Marr
Mar 30 2004, 10:44 PM
Godhand:No, I understand

I want to keep the comedy limited to the taunts, too. The funniness usually wears out the third or fourth time you hear something, and
I want this to go smooth and by the numbers.Kaine:Come to think of it, there's no harm in including a version without voice. The voice data is usually the last thing I mix in, anyway.
Delarosa:Doh. I should've mentioned that NS will refuse to play a stereo wav file; everything has to be mono. I've never seen a 4-channel ADPCM file, but the bitrate you quoted (89kbs) sounds about right for a 4-channel, 4 bit ADPCM wav file.
If you can open it in Sound Recorder, then go to File -->> Properties -->> Convert Now -->> And choose Format:
PCM, Attributes:
22 kHz, 16 bit, mono, 43 kb/sec. Save and it's all set.
If it
won't open in Sound Recorder, try GoldWave or the "Total Recorder" proggie I mentioned above.
Everyone:Thanks a bunch! I think I've got enough for my recording (probably this Friday).
Since the feedback's been good, I plan on keeping the statickey radio style as it is. Hopefully I won't get carried away...
And now: another feedback request! I'm thinking of replacing the voices the commander hears, like "Soldier needs ammo", "Soldier lost" etc, and I'm looking for suggestions. Since all I've got is my own voice, I'm planning on doing the same "grunt radio" style.
Here's what I got so far (Default Line -->> My Line):
| CODE |
Select your troops and give them orders -->> Come in, commander! Commander, do you copy? Press your jump key to go to the alert -->> Uh, sir, you copying this? / How do I get out of this chicken sh*t outfit? Command station online -->> Go ahead, sir. Your men are awaiting orders. Command station is online -->> All troops are standing by. / Remember, we're marines and we gotta job to do. The command station is under attack -->> The command chair!! They're all over it! The command station is under attack -->> Oh my god! They're mashin' the command chair! Commander has been ejected -->> He's outta there! Thank god for democracy! Don't just sit there -->> Talk to me, sir! Commander, do you copy? Do something about it -->> Hey, somebody wake up our commander! We need an infantry portal -->> Infantry portal, sir! We need an infantry portal -->> Reinforcements awaiting, sir! Drop an IP! Soldier needs ammo -->> Need ammo-drop here, sir Soldier needs ammo -->> Requesting ammo drop! You readin' this? Soldier needs health -->> Sir, I'm in sorry shape here. Requesting medpack drop. Soldier needs health -->> What are you waiting for? We need medpacks now! Soldier needs orders -->> Awaiting orders, sir. Soldier standing by -->> Standing by for orders, sir. Soldier lost -->> Noooo! Forget it, he's gone! Soldier lost -->> Man down, man down! Soldiers are under attack -->> Ngaah! We're under attack!

Great pack so far! My feedback:
* Tone down the static a little. It *IS* sexy, but just a tad over the top atm. Like a few other comments here, I can't clearly hear words of some phrases.
* Add a little more bass I think, give some resonance and depth to the voice.
* Love the addition of voice to things effects like medpacks. Great idea!
