Most servers(which are not clanservers or passwordprotected to ensure the skill level) accept new commanders, if you just ask nicely and dont beg overly much to be the comm. Just explain you are new and need to practise. You would be surprised over how may people that accepts it. Plus the marines have a valid reason for loosing, and bragging when they win smile.gif

One thing though, its always really handy if you know whats going on at a 'field' level when your playing as either side before you try to learn how to comm.

I DEFINITELY recommend starting your own game all by yourself to get a feel for comming first...

start a game, type sv_cheats 1, and then you can drop things as com and they'll build themselves. that way you get a feel for the tech tree, and the interface, and the hotkeys, so you won't be in a game with 6 teammates begging for resource towers and medpacks and upgrades and weapons and stuff and you won't know how to give them out...

Don't you need to activate the "bigdig" cheat first?

Comm-ing. Yes. Well, there's *loads* of guides available. Go through the "Frontiersmen Strategy" forums; there seems to be a new guide there posted daily.

If I was at home I would give you a link to "Sun Tze's 'The Art of War' ", but off-hand, I can't remember the URL. sad.gif
Anyone?

General tips:
  • Listen to your marines; esp' the ones with a nice K:D ratio
  • Dont build turrets at the start of the game unless there are over 8 aliens
  • Electrfication is not the be-all and end-all of RT protection
  • Phase gates are gifts from te Gods
  • If in doubt, siege
  • Attack early
  • Familiarise yourself with the qweasdzxc hotkeys. -In LAN play if necessary (as has been mentioned).

Although it sounds like an awful thing to do, and I hate it myself, I do find myself doing it.

If I am going to spend res on some Hexpensive goodies, I dont want them to be devoured whole by an onos as they go wandering solo into a hive wearing HA...

However, I do tend to drop shotties indescriminately. They can be used by any nub. Point (optional,) shoot.

Gaaah!!!! ROFL to the optional part of pointing the gun!

theres some good advce here In-the-shadows, the only thing i can think of adding is dont idle. got nothing to do? ask ur teammates they definatly give you something to do!!!

and b.t.w. if ppl start 13itching about you being a n00b just ignore it (unless marines are getting killed the moment they walk out of spawn- then you get out, mainly so you dont get all teh blame for loseing...) but take notice none-the-less and try and learn from any mistakes.

and lastly and most importantly ---- PRACTISE (kinda obvious though...)
and have fun.
