Hey there. I don't have Half-Life, but I do find this mod looks very interesting. I also have a keen
interest in Day of Defeat, and was just curious whether I can install Natural Selection as a mod to
the Day of Defeat retail version, in the event that I buy it. Or will this mod only install onto Half-Life.
Any help appreciated.

I found some info from the Tech Support forums here, but I don't think it's good news for you:

Due to engine changes Valve made to the DOD retail version of the game and problems the HL SDK has with this new engine, we are currently not officially supporting DOD retail as a mod platform for NS. We will still try to help you if you are having issues, but if you are here to ask about lag, crosshairs, directx mode, maxdistance errors, and other DOD problems, there is nothing we can do to help. This is a problem most mods are having with DOD, and is not particularly specific to NS. Until Valve releases some compatibility patches, you are unfortunately on your own for the time being. We apologize for the inconvenience, and encourage you to buy (at $9.99 usually) an old plain-jane copy of HL that will work just fine.

It's worth it. Trust me wink.gif

If you buy a normal HL (which is cheaper than DOD retail, I think), you can download both DOD and NS for free. If you have a decent connection, it makes sense to buy a normal copy of HL. I'm not sure if retail DOD comes with Steam, but if it doesn't, you are in for a long download anyway you go about it. Even if you don't have broadband, it might be better just to buy a normal HL and suffer the super long download time of Steam.

he can also install NS if he had CS retail..and my Steam install file is like 100 kb and i can install ALL games in the list

The best way to go about this is to buy the original Half-Life.

Why?
  • You get the entire Half-Life Singleplayer
  • You may download DOD and NS and install it, with the Guarantee that people can help you with any bugs
  • You minimize your chances of having any bugs.
  • DOD Retail costs more I believe, even though you are getting all that AND MORE with Regular HL.

This becomes more complicated if you have a slow connecion, but it is STILL DEFINETLY worth it.
