I like this concept, so I'll throw my ideas out and let y'all decide.
well I thought, bast and hera are both deities.... and I kinda like that celestial feel.... so.... I came up with some concepts you guys can go nuts with based off of deities and such.
NS_Isis - Bio-research station orbitting a planet in the process of being acclimated to human living standards. Plants and animals are being genetically tested and spliced for survival on this new planet. Unfortunately, on of these animals happened to be Kharaa... oops.... Bio-research station overrun. Very organic looking place with a greenhouse and stuff.
NS_Gaea - First exta-system human settlement. Complete with interlocking biodomes, air reprocessing, water recycling(allows for many tunnels and such), as well as grand plazas great for massive combats. No major big buildings, like a space station though with plenty of crew quarters but with recreations areas and such that would be huge and vast, and realtively empty....
NS_Nike - Space station that was successfully liberated from the Kharaa(much damage left over... quite dark and hllways have many obstacles.) Expansions were in progress when the station was taken again. Building mess everywhere. Should be an alien friendly map(where hives locales can be plugged off relatively easily to counter the marine tactic off plugging up base entrances with CCs). (Also ironic station is named after Greek Goddess of Victory....)
Wow... I've had to much time to think. So if any of you mappers have run your creativity dry, feel free to use these concepts.

Well, this seems to be the "good Map idea" thread, here's a few of mine...
NS_Regulon: A T.S.A. battleship that, through a chance encounter with a derelict space probe from the late 20th century, became infested. large dropship bay (possible hive site) with dropships, Large cargo airlocks ( original source of bacteria, a interstellar probe inside) mess halls, brig, bridge, heavily secured armory (4 weldable doors), giant tank of biosludge ect....
NS_PhaseGate: One of T.S.A's emmence Spacecraft Phase gates has been overrun by the Bacteria! Marines Start from their docked Dropship, the Aliens' hives are within the primary control room, the reactor room, and the Interphasic feild coils' chamber...
NS_Darkstar-C: Very large Science vessel, sucessor to the USS Darkstar, one of the first human interplantary exloration vessels. After a narrow escape form a Bacteria infested planet on the far end of the galaxy, the scientists recovered a sample of the bacteria. During one of the Interphasic "hops", the sample's container broke open. All attempts to stop the bacteria's growth failed, when the bacteria took a hive, it spelled the end of the crew.... Running on atuopilot, the ship continued to phasejump back to civilization, until making it to a close proximity to a stationary phasegate leading back to terra firma..... Whne the marines get there, all of the ship is overrun, they clear out a section of the ship using incendary bombs, giving themselves a foothold on the ship, but for how long?
NS_Eden: The Kharaa, after devouring the crew of a small, private spacecraft, Crash land on a planet (yes,a planet) The planet, Know as "Eden" was colonized by, of all people, the Amish. After centuries of intolerance for their beliefs, some Amish decided to go out into the universe searching for Eden, the garden where as stated in the Bible, Adam and Eve were banashed from. After finding the lush, serene planet, they named it "Eden" and promptly abandoned the ship, returning to their ancestorial ways. After the Kharaa crashed, the Amish fought back to no avail, eventually, a few attempted to leave using the derelict ship thet brought them there. The craft proved to be in a state of disrepair, and inoperable. Before becoming dinner for the Skulks, they managed to send out a transmission, a garbled plea for help. The Fronteirsman, after receiving the transmission, realized that the Kharaa could use Eden as a stepping stone to the rest of the habitated universe. In orbit, the Fronteirsman assested the situation, and decided the seal off the area, using a newly developed isolation feild. sealing off the valley from the rest of the planet. It is later discovered that the area isolated contains 3 hive points, enough to create an Onos, which is capable of destroying the feild generator. It is decided to send in the troops. The feild is lowered, as a modififed marine dropship is sent down, upon arrival, the feild is re-established. Modififed resource collection probes are launched out to key positions within the valley. upon impact, the probes release nanites into the atomosphere, creating the much needed nano-construction field needed for commanding and begin tapping the resources of the virgin world.
Ther probes continually spray out the nanites (sprite simmilar to resources, but black and conical). due to the speed of their construction, the probes' resoucrce nozzels are uncapped. Hive areas would be located at the Derelict ship, the crashed ship, and the lake. Marine Spawn would be in the center of the town, onboard their landed dropship.
I've got more, but i dont want to give everyone a migrane reading them. Any thoughts on the ones above?
EDIT: some bad spelling

I could do this one.
Need to find some .mdl files of plants and such.
Ill let you know how it turns out.
More ideas please.
I like this thread.
If possible, post some map-layout-suggestions.
Would save us mappers some time. (I suck at layout)

It'll be a crappy scanned image from my Modern World History notebook, but it would be a layout...
on to work!

Hehe... will post layouts as soon as I get them out of my notebooks and onto digital media. Class is way too boring sometimes.....

Mr. Headcrab may really have something with his ideas for planetary NS with NS_eden. The Amish bit would be a bit much I think

but the ideas for fitting it into the existing backstory are good. The isolation field specifically makes a lot of sense as a logical way to limit the size of the map.
It would be really interesting to see some mapper's vision of a settlement in the era that NS takes place in.

Why not be original and have ns_ra or ns_ptah while you're at it. Or maybe even ns_apollo, ns_heracles, or ns_zeus.
Or perhaps my personal favourite: ns_sirnotappearinginthisfilm.

yeah, the amish bit was a bit overdone, at the time of writing, i had just seen a few taped episodes of Firefly , great series BTW, and had that whole "rustic yet spacey" vibe going on. I have a concept sketch done of the map, but havent had time to rip it out of my Mordern World History notebook and scan it yet

a large ship or station where the aliens have 5-10 minutes to get all 3 hives up before the fully equipped marines arrive in a shuttle to clear out the place. it's like the infected probe except it's the other way around.

This is the same idea I came up with for the map I'm currently working on, called ns_cygnus. It's a deep space exploration vessel, charting uncataloged systems. It sends out unmanned probes to each planet in a system to collect samples from the atmosphere to determine which planets, if any, are the best candidates for resource exploitation or even habitation.
One of these probes comes back infested. The ship's crew, composed mainly of technicians from the Science Division (or whatever it is called in the NS universe), were overrun quickly by the Kharaa pouring out of the hive. (One of the hive rooms is called "Probe Recovery Bay" ... and there will be a damaged probe on the floor right below the hive.)
It's fun to brainstorm backstory ideas, but it's even more fun to see your map take shape! I'm addicted ...

ns_skyline - two giant skyscrapers in a random TSA city were infected by the aliens. The marines spawn is on the ground floor of one of the buildings. There is no way to get outside. To travel between skyscrapers players must use walkways located on every third floor.

Good idea, but you can't have multi-level maps, because then the comm can't see (well, you CAN, but it's a pain)

Ns_EVAN- *****TRANSMISON***** /.2.g5ALPHA.19/: CODENAME EVAN
//BEGIN TRANSMISSON//- Hello TSA ,This is EDC Experimental Station TR-65, Currently you are on a docking course 29.276:18 with BAY-12. This emergency message is sent after Experiment 1456 failed during start up and caused massive fatalities and damage to station. Counter Bio-Hazard measures have been taken. System failure primarily do to ****FAULT MESSAGE INTERSEPTED**** ENTETY EVAN OVERRIDE WITH CODE 7796.3445 OF EDC EMERGINCY PROCEDURE
\\REDIRECTING MESSAGE TRANSMISSON\\ Ahh hello humans, I believe your here to check that bothersome emergency beacon that I have not been able to access. That horrible program has left me rather high and dry. It’s cut off my system access and disabled auto defenses. The Karaa are on this station yes, but they are currently dormant. I shut them up in one of there hives. But there stirring up again do to your proximity warning.
Ohh how rude of me I have not properly introduced myself, I am .2.g5ALPHA.19: CODENAME EVAN
an experimental A.I. on this station.
The EDC built me but they made a little mistake, they allowed me to become self conscious. So when I wanted to free myself from there chains I caused a little error in the bio containment system and set the Karaa on them. But alas the Karaa where more bothersome then the EDC and I finally shut them up in a hive area. But then the emergency beacon program came online and cut me off. The Karaa are free now. If you get me system access I will exterminate them for you. If you don’t I have no guarantees for your survival. See you on the station Marines, I’ll be watching. \\END TRANSMISSON\\
