Is there a default key or summat I can press to get the on-screen info back?

Hmm... I dont remember an option that even let you remove it... Make sure you have the lastest drivers for your video card and you have HL propertly installed.

Well I've had it on and off before (neither deliberately), I think I must be pressing something.

Check your drivers. There's no default bind to turn it off; you have to enter a console command.
