It's true. Very true.

I was in a game where I logged into the CC in the middle of the game. By then, things were going pretty bad. They've got 2 hives i think, or maybe even 3! I wasn't sure. We had no heavy armor, yet but we had hmgs and grenade launchers. Obvciously, the previous commander was heavy foritifying 1 resrouce node and the other node near eclipse command hive which was only to fall under the massive splashes of Fades nearby from the active eclopse command hive! A marine shouted, "We need to get that Eclipse command hive fast instead of hanging out at this node!". "Sure!", i replied. We had no heavy armor. I set up a radar at home base to allow phase gates at homebase and another phase gate near hive to send in attacking parties. We spawned in with light armor and HMGs and Grande launchers. We fought bravely but the massive offensetowers and Fade splashes and skulk rushes killed my poor light armor marines. There were 7 of these marines!! We put up a good fight, but not good enough. It wasn't really my decision to attack, but the marines. They fought for each other to get the hive, It was NOW or NEVER...but the counterattack couldn't succeeed without heavy armor. However, if I waited for heavy armor, that entire area would fall totally under the alien's control.

Lesson 1: Never send light armored marines against a huge alien presence. No matter how much marines there are or how much cool weapons and upgrades they have, they will ALL die. A huge alien presence is:
-they have skulks
-they have fades
-there are offense chambers to distract them

Actually, all you need are 2 skulks or 1 skulks + 1 offense chamber to wipe out a group of 7 light armored marines. Most of the marines there are inexperienced and disorganised.

So, i watched and waited for heavy armor. We are losing that area. No choice due to failed attack. But just then, a lone wanderer stumbles upon an active hive at the other end of the map from the left entrance. THat hive didn't had defenese at left entrance...So, this hive was weakly defended. I wanted to shout, "Hang on, build a phase gate first so everyone wack this!", but he already started shooting the @$(* hive. He alerted the enemy and embaassingly got killed!

Lesson 2: Bind an alias so to shout out , "That guy, don't shoot hive yet, you've got a good position. Send in reinforcements phased!"
You'll never know. With Light armored HMGs and Grenade luanchers vs 1 undefended hive coming in from the phase gates, that hive could be toasted and would demoralise the alien team.

Summary: Attack their archilles heel.
Even though you are a marine, be like an alien as well. Seize opputunity as well, like munching a CC. Being a marine is hard 'cause you need to balance between "opputunity" and "standard procedure".

Oh sure, ninja stuff. It works if the lone person knows what they're doing and doesn't shoot at anything. It works even better if he has a jetpack.

It only works once though. If you blow it the first time it'll be fortified the next time.

Here is what happens to me when I do it...
I run in, dodging skulks and getting behind/in a hive.
I ask for a phase gate to get reinforcements so we can take the hive down before they know what hit em.
Commander lays tfac, some mroron ports in, starts stabbing the hive with their knife before the tfac is done.
The resources have just been wasted, as there are nowhere near enough turrets in to help defend agains the nearly instant homicidal frenzied attack of the aliens...

And a welder. Can't forget the welder. Insane flying engineer + poorly defended Hive = dead Hive.

I agree ... nothing irritates me more as a Marine than some n00b deciding to pepper the Hive with his LMG from a mile off. Of course, as a Kharaa, it's one of my favourite things; because nothing gets the Alien team coordinated like a Hive under attack, even more so thanks to 1.03 smile.gif

n00b Marine: Hey, an undefended Hive!
Smart Marine: NO! You FOOL!
nM: (fires)
Army of angry Skulks: Rawr!

I assumed he meant "dodging" as in "avoiding them" - since the idea of a Marine dodging Skulks is absurd.

asrifle.gif "haha, I will dodge you!"

Bast is a great map to do that on, just use the elevator going down and climb in one of the vents about 1/4 of the way down on the far wall of the elev. If you've got a good team and some HMG, Engine room hive is meat. I used this a couple of days ago and killed the hive with just that, HMG and welder. Told comm that a hive was down and we needed to secure it immediately and what did he do? Sent us to atmos processing to try and setup the 2 res nodes there... and we died... and we lost.

I've dodged skulks ...

but they were attacking me in a narrow hallway full of buildings and I just kept hopping over the buildings and let the turrets eat them apart. I don't think it'd work to well in the field. =\
