Some of you may remember the sub-40-poly turret I crafted with the help of the DoD 1.3 'transparent texture' model effects. Well, there was some interest in that, and I'd made progress towards doing that with most of the models in fact.

So far I've found the alien Defense Chamber, and a partially-finished version of that Turret I posted, and I'm finding bits and pieces of others I'd made the required new textures for but hadn't finished the modelling and boning for. Is there any interest in finishing up this extreme low-poly model pack, or does everyone have UberMighty rigs compared to back then and it'd just be a dead project these days that nobody would care about?

Sadly, there's nobody out there anymore running NS on a Pentium II.

I just checked my server logs, and I got a few hits on some of my low poly stuff in July, but nothing in August or September. ::shrug:: Almost any modern computer can run NS even without a 3D accelerator. Such is the way of technology.

Well there does have to be at least a minimal 3d accelerator in there. An onboard 2d chip simply will not run even something simple as Half-Life vanilla at fps higher then 40. I know, since I fell victim to it with a browsing/printserver computer when my primary rig's mobo fried:

3000+sempron
TwinX corsair PC3200
WD Sata150 10.000 raptor drive
And a sad 16-128MB shared mem onboard video card...

Normally it would run at 40fps. Encountering 1 other player it would dip to 20fps. If they start shooting it would be 10fps and if I shoot back I would have a staggering 4-6fps biggrin-fix.gif

Not to mention what would happen if there were more the one players onscreen in a more detailed area (600w-poly). how does 1 stuttering fp3s sound?

I'm not even sure IF I still played NS and used this low poly pack, I would get any better performance in NS...

meh, just venting some frustration I had to endure for 4 days of gaming vs people on TS laughing at me due to bad gaming on my part biggrin-fix.gif I'm just glad I got my new rig today...

I've been temporarily gaming on a 1.4ghz p4 with a TNT2 through linux since July. (Same rig as I've always used for the most part, minus an ATI 9600xt and windows.)

Go-go 5 fps!

Honestly, it's the particle systems that kill me. I'll take this though over the dialup I had all winter.

I just installed NS to a 1.8GHz P4 box with an Nvidia Quadro NVS graphics card (2d only), and I started a server in Tanith at 1280x1024. I loaded up the marine start with as many turrets as would fit, and I was getting 18-20 avg fps. r_speeds said I had 31000(!) epolys on screen. Maybe there are some intense battles out there where you have more than 31000 epolys on screen at one time, but they can't be often.

I also tried it with a 1.86 Core 2 Duo, again with a 2d-only graphics card, and couldn't get it to go below 60fps.

@Kouji_San: I don't know what's bottlenecking your experience, but that sucks. I blame the Sempron.

@BigD: That TNT2 card might be hurting more than it's helping :-P
