Hey, I was thinking after reading the responses in this thread that a waypoint system that is linked to the scoreboard would be a good idea. Here's an example of what I've been thinking:

I'm commander in a game. I could select 'Player A' on the scoreboard and give him a Waypoint to go to Overlook. I then could select 'Player B - D" and give them a Waypoint to move to Cargo. I then can select 'Player E' and tell him to pick up a welder.

All this can be done via the scoreboard by selecting the player(s) name(s) and placing the Waypoint. This idea could extend to a point where a player only hear what the comm says if the comm selects that player. It could even help him find a certain player by selecting the players name and selecting the button "go to player". The commander can even make squads by selecting the players he wants in the squad via the scoreboard and make the squad. Almost anything involving the players and the commander done via the normal way can also be done using this scoreboard method.

This idea would be good because it would:
  • Update the old waypoint system.
  • Give the commander more flexibility as to who does what, allowing him to do something like "good players go here, bad players go there".
  • Reduce unneeded mic chatter by allowing the commander to only speak to players who he needs to.
  • Improve commander efficiency as a whole
  • Would facilitate and encourage greatly the use of squads (beyond "your all squad 1")
It would be bad because it would:
  • Complicate the commander mode further
  • Hard to implement
Tell me what you think smile-fix.gif. Remember that this would function mainly as a shortcut for commanders to do things he can already do the normal way (at least for the current moment).

Quick note: Forum subtitle is a little misleading... forgot to finish typing it out tounge.gif

I definitely think this should be incorporated into NS2. Rather than have to change the current waypoint and command system, they could just create it this way from the start, assuming they don't copy and paste the commander code

I see this thread has less responses than i thought it would. It seems like a good idea so i figured I'd get more responses. :/
Underwhelmed
Well, I like it. It certainly helps me keep track of who is where, etc.

Don't like the voice stuff. That seems unnecessary.

I think I'd like to see a bit of the screen dedicated to monitoring marines rather then pulling up the scoreboard. A small icon showing health+armor and their name underneath perhaps? You could drop items onto their icon, select their icon just like you'd select a marine, etc.

Exactly, my goal was to have some type of way to select individual solders much easier than the current way. The easiest way is some type of screen with all the players names, along with maybe their score, weapons, status (dead or alive), health/armour and location. I just thought that since we already have the scoreboard which has most of that info already, that we could just modify the scoreboard rather than making a whole new thing for the same purpose.

The voice thing can be somewhat useful, at least the goal is to discourage people from blocking all mic output in the game (people don't usually want or need to hear chatter irrelevant to them, this idea would help cut down on chatter). The voice idea was more of a extension to my main idea of Orders Given Via the Scoreboard.

couldnt you just set different individuals to different squads, then pressing a number to bring up the person in that numbered squad and order them that way....

bringing up the scoreboard would cover a good portion of the screen, and its kinda important to know what is going on...

i think the commander should just have a useful minimap, maybe where you can see a list of dead marines at the bottom and every marine as a big dot on the minmap WITH the name, so you know quickly where a special marine is and you can name him via voice, otherwise you have to scroll all over the map again and again to find out the marines name 8)

but i think your idea is way to complicated for the commander... if i'm commanding, the last thing i want to do is pressing more buttons

this might be a bit OT:
on public the marines often do not follow waypoints (by camping somwhere or going somewhere else) or they are automatically at the needed positions tounge.gif

i think its a great idea. idk why the devs dont put those stuff into the game, maybe its just lack of time...
