I guess it says it all in the thread title and description.
As it is, we see almost everything the comm does; we can tell if hes med spamming, what upgrades hes getting, how many turrets hes dropping, etc.
Why not make it even more in-depth? There are only a select few things that are missing, and they're rare enough that they wouldn't 'spam' the marines at all.
Recycling: Why not? Its good to know if the comm recycled the obs by mistake, or if he only recycled two turrets out of the three in the hive. You'd probably just have the same icon for whatever is being recycled, with a translucent 3-arrows-in-a-circle symbol overlaid, accompanied by the usual location name.
Cancelling upgrades: This is another 'why not?'. Its a rare, but existing situation where the comm starts W1 but then immediately cancels it and goes for A2, or such. Currently, marines on the ground would be both upgrades start back-to-back, and possibly think they have two arms labs. This would just help the newer players understand, and make things a bit more polished. Its also nice to see that yes, he did cancel the MT right before the skulk killed the obs. This could be done using the same icons for the upgrades, with a red translucent slash across it.
Commander View Location: This would probably be simply an addition to the HUD, just above where the commander action icons are stacked. 'Comm View: Main Aft', etc. This is a less useful addition, but a very nice one, which would also be extremely easy to implement.
All of these updates to the marine's HUDs are very easy to implement, and would be just that much more polish on a game that is already sparkling. So... why not?
Thoughts?

if they have time, why not although its not really needed.
recycling you can see when looking at the structure
cancel upgrade should always be done if the structure is beyond saving. If he switches ups, you see the new up apear to fast in the select menu (left) and know he canceled)
a good comm shows where he is by his orders and comment, he is everywhere. I don't think i need a line on my screen blinking locations every 2 seconds

This would be nice so I don't have to tell my troops that whatever research got cancelled because the res is better spent somewhere else at the moment.
It could be something as simple as the normal sprite for the research/upgrade with a diagonal bar overlayed.

Yes, and you can see a med when its dropped

. The point of showing when and where the comm drops meds is to keep marines better informed, and to keep the comm somewhat more accountable for his actions. Recycling the wrong this can instantly crippled the marines, but they are currently kept completely out of the loop.

OMG BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!
/recycle marine
Notifications... I guess it could be a neat thing to have... Of course it would put a lot more pressure on the com not to mess up, since everyone is watching. I'd say this is more of a side thing, than a big change.

there used to be a plugin that had yellow streaks wherever the comm was looking, it was interesting

This is one fix for the comm ejecting jerks who yell that the comm is recycling MS when he is doing no such thing.

This was cool for about one minute. I found it became extremely annoying and distracting as a marine, and it started affecting my positioning as a commander (to not block their view, etc).

I like the idea of showing canceled upgrades or recycling, it helps the marines see the comms mistakes and alert the comm to his mistakes (hey, im pretty sure we've all commed and accidentally dropped an obs in some random location by accident), only this would be for accidental recycling. I give a thumbs up to that idea.
The idea about comm view points is something I find interesting. Its a good idea because if the comm says "behind you" without specifying who, you can just check with this feature where he's looking and see if he's talking to you or not. Though it'll have to be something discrete, maybe a little bar below the room name location at the bottom left corner of the screen.
In general, I give it a thumbs up

I always figured a recycle notification should be there. I think it should ideally be logged in the marine chat. It's something that should be rare enough that it wouldn't spam, and it'd be very noticeable to marines then. Plus, if it said something like "lamerX recycled obs" it'd be easy for server admins who, busy in the field all of a sudden have an argument about so and so jumping in the chair recycling everything. (And experienced admins have seen the lamers that do it then start screaming "OMG goodguyY JUST RECYCLED BASE BAN HIM BAN HIM!") Just open the console, find the lamer that did it and ban him on the spot.
If nothing else, this would make a good plugin methinks.
Upgrade cancelling and comm positioning... wouldn't be bad, but not as critical as recycle notification.

I don't see why not. Just another one of those intuitive HUD interfaces that, honestly, I think most newcomers would expect to have.
It'd be particularly nice if the comm location was configurable. i.e, text-only, mini-map icon, mini-map icon+text, or none at all.
Is that so hard?

lol i never even thought of that; a little box on your minimap showing the comm's view. Cool add-on idea.
