I run a very advanced self customized computer and even have Vista Ultimate running on it. Believe it or not, half life and NS worked fine on it for about 6 months now. All of a sudden the other day i tried changing my gamma while playing NS, and all this incompatble ish showed up and now everytime i try to start HL OR NS it flickers the game backround screen and before the menu even shows up, it flickers right back to desktop. I just got done uninstalling NS, HL and even steam. Completely reinstalled everything and it is still a problem. I am totally lost as to what to do.
P.S. - i just ran Spybot, and AVG anti-virus and found absolutely no spyware or virus's. I maintain my computer very well and honestly have no idea where to go from here and seeing how i'm addicted to NS, i'm pretty sad. =(
Specs.
Core duo 2.6's
4gig ram
Radeon Crossfire 1950
Vista Ultimate

As I recall, when uninstalling Steam it's imperative you go into the registry to delete what entries the uninstall missed.
This is an educated guess, as I haven't had to do this in a good while.

Well not only did i reinstall it, i reinstalled it on a different drive (my computer has 6 different hard drives, some partitioned) AND i ran Registry Booster on my system... Come to think of it i haven't restarted since though so i will try that and post any changes.
still no luck

!~UPDATE~!
after trying out countless launch commands (right clicking on the game, going to properties and inserting specific launch commands) i tried launching it in a window with -windowed command. It ran, and apparently when i was messing with my video options i didn't know that opengl doesn't get along with widescreen format with my videocard. So i changed it to DRD, widescreen and 1680X1050 and now i'm set to go. Thanks for trying though. I feel like a moron having the solution been so simple and not having needed to reinstall. oh well. Lesson learned.

You've given others some useful information though.
Glad all is well.
